3K RazorBook is revised 3K Longitude 400 -- still crappy
This new "in the wild" shot of 3K Computers' upcoming Eee PC killer just pretty much confirms what we already knew: it's a piece of crap. Lucky for us, it's now a piece of crap with a new name, the 3K RazorBook. The specs haven't budged, however, with a 7-inch 800 x 400 screen, 400MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB flash drive, unspecified Linux OS, WiFi and three USB ports. For $400 we're thinking no, but perhaps those are some really fast 400 megahertzes.

Pentium 2 ftw!
Lein @ May 12th 2008 11:33PM
Nuh uh, K6-II was totally better.
Aguiluz @ May 13th 2008 12:54AM
4044 FTW!

This is perfect for students who just need basic computing tasks such as word processing, access to excel spreadsheets, wi-fi, and for $399?? Seems like a home run if you ask me. If you want crazy computing power your going to spend more than $399.00. Does ANYONE here understand this?? It's not about the speed its about the architecture, size, and portability. Today's modern dual core processors operate at half the speed (on average) of the last couple of years' hyper threading CPU's yet they are considerably faster than their predecessors.

eww.

I'll stick to my Nokia N800.
imacmatt09 @ May 12th 2008 11:43PM
Haha. It looks like a cheap portable dvd player, I mean look at the screen.
Bani_B @ May 13th 2008 12:07AM
I think my portable DVD player has a 400MHz processor.
Reader @ May 13th 2008 1:47AM
My chap stick has a 400mhz processor.
Rohan @ May 12th 2008 11:44PM
For $400, you can buy a used Sony Picturebook from 8 years ago, that will outperform this piece of junk in every way.
Aguiluz @ May 13th 2008 12:51AM
I got my (new) Acer Aspire 3050 for the same exact price.
Jason White @ May 13th 2008 12:57AM
Better yet... my Acer 3680 was only $350, and I can guarantee that it'll outperform that little thing in every way possible.
Aguiluz @ May 13th 2008 1:06AM
Acers PWN that POS. :D
MrBoB @ May 13th 2008 2:05PM
I second the sony picturebook idea. I recently got mine out after several years of disuse, installed a flash hdd, more ram, and installed fluxbuntu on it. It's every bid the equal of the eeepc.
Josh @ May 12th 2008 11:57PM
where's my freakin typewriter
August @ May 13th 2008 12:12AM
i'm legitimately embarrassed for this. like my insides are squirming
vdogg89 @ May 13th 2008 12:15AM
lol I think its funny how engadget has become so biased concerning apple and eee pc. Anything that tries to rival either one of these will get kicked in the balls by engadget
computer.dude.28 @ May 13th 2008 12:24AM
No objections to the apple bias, but this thing.. this thing is crap compared to the eee! 400 MHz, my old iPAQ hx2190 was 300MHz!
computer.dude.28 @ May 13th 2008 12:16AM
The image on the screen must be a picture. I don't think that thing could handle an actual video @ a whole 800 x 400!
John @ May 13th 2008 12:17AM
Why is everyone complaining? I thought you all wanted a $400 laptop?
Chris @ May 13th 2008 12:29AM
That's what I was thinking... I mean if all you want to do is surf the web, and use Word this seems like a cheap alternative to the Air... Especially if your company won't spring for a lappy. The specs are horrible, but if I traveled a lot and all I had was a desktop, I'd go w/ this... again, if the company wouldn't spring for the Air. ;-)
mac404 @ May 13th 2008 12:55AM
Hell, my mp3 player has a 400mhz dual-core ARM processor. This thing is a glorified cell phone at an increased form factor and price. Sure, you get a "regular" (non-mobile) operating system, but that's the only benefit this has over any new smartphone. Other 7-10 inch laptops offer better processors and higher-resolution displays for not much more money. That's the point.
CraigJ @ May 13th 2008 1:13AM
$400 laptop, yes. $400 piece of shit, no. For $400 I can get a Dell Vostro 1000 with Windows XP. Not a great machine but hey, for $399 quite the bargain.
Benson @ May 13th 2008 8:53PM
But $400 gets you an N810 these days. (That's 400 MHz, too, and fits in a shirt pocket.) If you don't want the built-in keyboard, you could even get the N800 for $200 (still 400 MHz).
And I'm betting it's stomped for battery life. 4 hours of heavy use, 6+ of light use. A week of standby. If this is anything like the eee, it loses.
I don't see the point of this; there are no x86-only apps that run well on a machine of this class, so arch wars can't be used. It's not cheaper, and it's not got a full-sized keyboard... How's it better?
Oh, I forgot, old people who can't read 250px/inch displays. Right. _Big_ market there.
Mr.Gadget Australia @ May 13th 2008 1:32AM
Ouch! Sucks to be 3K...
Onetrack @ May 13th 2008 1:35AM
The formfactor is great.
the internals, not so much.
Why isn't anyone sticking low power dothans into these? SOMETHING..
LarryLarryLarry @ May 13th 2008 1:36AM
Can we please give credit where credit its due? The huge chrome bezel is a true innovation.
Bob @ May 13th 2008 2:15AM
For $400, I'd rather buy a low-end notebook.
Blakamin @ May 13th 2008 2:10AM
My 3 year old HTC Apache is faster that that!!!!
Probably runs better too
Bob @ May 13th 2008 2:11AM
Its not worth $400. You can buy a better notebook for $400 than that, probably one with a P-III processor or a K6-III processor.
ITRanger @ May 13th 2008 3:52AM
The sad thing is that they will sell these things to unsuspecting people who have no idea what a processor is.
This is how consumers are exploited, not to mention the damage to the environment producing a useless product. Although, to be fair, they aren't the first company to do this.
Unfortunately, corporate greed knows no bounds - sometimes.
David @ May 13th 2008 5:30AM
Dude stfu with the corporate greed monologue, its not like 3k are gouging. Anyway I reckon this is a fail, I don't see it flying out of stores tbh.
If the processor's as weak as it looks, in-store demonstrations are gonna be embarrassing.
Michael @ May 13th 2008 8:55AM
I wonder if any of these companies actually read Engadget user feedback? Sometimes it seems like these companies just make stuff up out of thin air. I just don't get why there are so many of these electronics companies that don't seem to have their finger on the pulse of what people really want.
Marty @ May 13th 2008 9:35AM
Still has more USB ports than the (hot) Air.
Sudo @ May 13th 2008 4:37PM
