AT&T listing "iPhone Black" model, O2 gets the original back in stock
Good news and bad news on the imminent 3G iPhone front. O2 apparently got another batch of 16 giggers in stock, since it's currently accepting orders, while the 8GB remains out of stock, and both phones remain unavailable on the US and UK Apple Stores. More encouraging, however, is the new listing of an "iPhone Black" model on AT&T's account management site. There's nothing else on the site to hint at specs or release or whether this is indeed the upcoming 3G iPhone, but it does fall in line with the word we have on a glossy black back for the much anticipated phone. Whether all this means we have weeks or months to wait is anyone's guess, but there are plenty of encouraging signs out there for the true believers to cling onto.

Make it end already and release the next iPhone, so this news can stop...Please???
Ryan Trevisol @ May 12th 2008 11:38AM
Wait a minute, are you telling me there's a NEW iPhone coming out?
For reals?
Juice @ May 12th 2008 11:58AM
Once you go Black...
Hey does anyone know if there are any rubberized after market iPhone covers. Not a skin, a replacement cover. Rubberized.
r3loaded @ May 12th 2008 12:04PM
Yeah Engadget, plz STFU about the 3G iPhone. We know it's coming. You can review it when you actually get your hands on one, k?
Now why don't you go do some articles about the HTC Touch Diamond?
Mic2000 @ May 12th 2008 11:08AM
So maybe this could be a confirmation that the image with the (for some people) less appreciated design of the new IPhone really is the 3G IPhone...
Aman @ May 12th 2008 1:10PM
Confirmed it ture
paul @ May 12th 2008 11:10AM
Could it be coming real soon? Like tomorrow, next tuesday?
Steffen Jobbs @ May 12th 2008 12:04PM
Sorry, but I want at least another week or so of "rumors and speculation" of when it is coming out. It'll be boring when it actually arrives. Rumors are much more entertaining. Rumors totally bug the crap out of iPhone haters and speculation drive the nerds completely insane as to why the iPhone has to have a feature or can't possibly have a feature.
This entertaining Engadget forum has to be one of the most amusing weirdo magnet sites of all. Where on earth do all these rude commenters come from to end up on Endgadget telling the authors they shouldn't post certain articles of their own choosing? Must come from Cuba or something where censorship is government controlled.
How much brain-power does it take to not click on an article headline that you don't wish to read about. Insane. Engadget going to have to put up a disclaimer that reading certain articles may incite rampant animosity.
Juice @ May 12th 2008 12:58PM
Heck, I want another year to two of speculation and rumor. I'm sure Engadget does too. Please Apple, please O please don't release any info on a new iPhone for at least a year or two. That would be awesome! Hype is much better than the real thing. It always is. Except for GTA4. Now that is sick. LOL.
dBs @ May 12th 2008 11:12AM
"...but there are plenty of encouraging signs out there for the true believers to cling onto."
Anybody need help with that static cling?
Korey @ May 12th 2008 11:15AM
I'll drop Big Red Oh soooo Fast!!!
4honor @ May 12th 2008 11:20AM
I hope the internal stuff don't change much, otherwise we'd have to wait a bit longer for unlocking hacks... I don't use AT&T...
Paul @ May 12th 2008 11:23AM
Wait for it... Wait for it... X 1000

Twice even!
Esat Dedezade @ May 12th 2008 12:20PM
I deserved what I got, Pointless comment, only I posted it twice to make it worse!
I have learned a lesson.
CharlieX @ May 12th 2008 11:27AM
Time for Engadget to make a special feed: 3G iPhone rumors/news/nonsense and let us subscribe to it, or have it stricken from our sight. It's a bit out of control.... almost as bad as when the iPhone itself was a rumor.
CharlieX @ May 12th 2008 11:33AM
And I declare this as a Day 1 iPhone owner. So I "get" the fever. But c'mon
Phoenix @ May 12th 2008 12:01PM
Agreed.
maybe just have the actual RELEASE in the normal one, keep everything else to a separate feed.
Nate @ May 12th 2008 1:44PM
There are plenty of other places to read about actual news. Part of engadget's charter is reporting rumor of varying degrees of reliability.
Where most rumors don't have value, gadget rumors have tremendous value. A grouping of solid 3G iPhone rumors might keep a shopper like me from investing hundreds in a technology that is less than 60 days from being replaced by one that is far superior than what the market offers right now.
CharlieX @ May 12th 2008 2:18PM
point well taken, Nate.
but I have a hard time believing anyone who's reads Engadget with even the mildest regularity doesn't know there's 3G in the wings and buying the current EDGE model is a waste of their money. I would assume the typical Engadget reader is pretty well versed on the iPhone.
Fernando @ May 12th 2008 11:29AM
Just in: Someone in Cupertino farted and it sounded like a new ringtone for the the new 3G iPhone.
Esat Dedezade @ May 12th 2008 11:32AM
Thats one neat party trick!
Andy @ May 12th 2008 11:29AM
on the site, you can "Select Phone by Image" and the "black" phone looks exactly the same as the normal iPhone. If it is a new model, they must not have updated the image seeing as how it is not out yet.
Nosuch Phonecompany @ May 12th 2008 11:42AM
"Black" as in "supersecret"?
Quake97 @ May 12th 2008 11:43AM
If you go look at the other current phone models on their they all have a Black after them. It's some AT&T goof up. Settle down everyone.
Vit @ May 12th 2008 11:46AM
Black? What do you mean by that?
JMF @ May 12th 2008 11:49AM
Are you kidding me? this is "breaking news"? Even to Apple fanboys, this is hardly news for a hard-on
mansd @ May 12th 2008 11:52AM
Also some news about a May release and a new device at WWDC
http://www.macrumors.com/2008/05/11/3g-iphone-in-may-another-device-at-wwdc/
PSM @ May 12th 2008 5:04PM
Interesting. There does seem to be a lot pointing to a late-May release. The only thing going directly against that is the AT&T employee vacation memo, which points to late June. I don't know what to think at this point. My credit card is waiting whenever they're ready.
craig#2 @ May 12th 2008 11:58AM
just sold my used unlocked iPhone on the ebay for a fat 430 USD yesterday. Woot!
Joel Thomas @ May 12th 2008 12:00PM
So.. if you can select the "iPhone Black" why don't someone buy it and see?
Phoenix @ May 12th 2008 1:20PM
It's not selling, it's some kind of support website...
sonicwind @ May 12th 2008 12:02PM
Actually, Apple has decided not to continue selling the iPhone, ever. They are mad because of all the unlocking.
Eric @ May 12th 2008 12:14PM
Wouldn't they still have to get FCC approved before releasing this thing?
mike @ May 12th 2008 12:34PM
It probably is with the FCC, but they can put a request to block release of info until the product is approved (which may line up with the announcement of the iPhone), or until the announcement is actually made.
Rudiger @ May 12th 2008 12:22PM
I hope they don't charge more for the black iPhone...
nima @ May 12th 2008 12:32PM
Engadget should add a +/-/! to their news so we can vote down the overly redundant iphone news.
Kizorblade @ May 12th 2008 12:42PM
How about you vote with your feet (or mouse) and not actually read the article then waste your time commenting on it how it wastes your time.
Jeez.
boss-hogg @ May 12th 2008 12:48PM
does anyone really know if it is 3G or 3.5g? once you go to 3.5g its hard to go back. if its just 3g then ill stick with my n95 8gb with 3.5G and sling box! :)
Engadgetluvsappl @ May 12th 2008 1:31PM
Amen!
.... @ May 12th 2008 3:48PM
is everyone else on crazy pills or is it just me who cares about 3.5g or rather know the difference?
Patrick @ May 12th 2008 1:02PM
I was outside the Apple store at the Biltmore Fashion Center in Phoenix last night, from closing time at 6pm to 8:30pm they had blacked out the front of the store and totally gutted it. They removed all product and displays and all fixtures. They put a sign on the door saying closed from May 12th to the 16th as they were making the store better than ever in preparation for a very special quest. 3G iPhone???
Virtuous @ May 12th 2008 1:24PM
Apple is missing out by running out at this inopportune time.
TareX @ May 12th 2008 1:37PM
So there'll be an iPhone white? (like the one in the leaked photos)
The white one looked great, it looks new and advanced (how many black phones are out there?), and would be MUCH less of a fingerprint magnet.
I doubt they'll be released together, though...
Sean O. @ May 12th 2008 11:15PM
Wouldn't it be a dirt magnet though? I've owned a white Nintendo DS and those get pretty grimy after a long time.
DustyPotatoes @ May 12th 2008 2:16PM
Good news guys, I just got off the phone with Steve Jobs and he said that the 3G iPhone will come free with the PowerBook G5 next Tuesday, and they'll make you breakfast in bed and do your laundry!
Vote this down, I dare you.
Sean O. @ May 12th 2008 3:29PM
Ok here's the thing for everyone flailing their arms in hectic panic about Engadget's frequency of iPhone rumors. This is the same thing as the Vista hater/lover fight. There's a silent majority that Engadget clearly knows about and is speaking to with these stories.
Just because 15 of you are taking the time to complain in these comments doesn't mean that there arent 1,500 others haven't already read and enjoyed the article in question.
As said before, if you're not interested in the article, scroll beyond it and move on with your life. Don't take up all this comment space moaning about something Engadget isn't interested in changing. They get web traffic from it. Done deal.
