Canon prepping a Digital Rebel XS / 1000D?

Canon's been known to leak an upcoming model or five in website descriptions, UPC codes, certification lists, and driver downloads, so pardon us if we're not too shocked that references to a "Rebel XS / 1000D" have popped up in the latest version of the company's RAW conversion utility. Of course, there aren't any specs or pictures, but based on Canon's naming scheme, we'd hazard that it'll be a lower-end version of the Rebel XSi, replacing the now somewhat-outdated Rebel XT. Of course, that's purely conjecture, but based on Canon's track record with these leaks, we'll know for sure soon enough.

Honestly, I find Canon's naming scheme confusing. Especially so once you move away from the 1D/5D/40&30D models.

It becomes a mess of Rebel XTi / XS / X-whatever. What are these things, video cards?

On the same note, when is the 5D replacement coming out? I wouldn't mind swapping out my 30D and I have the glass for a nice new FF camera :)

It's the naming scheme that Canon uses to be hip in the US. Everywhere else in the world:

Rebel = 300D
XT = 350D
XTi = 400D
XSi = 450D

So the naming progression makes sense, just not in the US. Go figure, blame the marketing team.

You do realize that this will below the current Rebel's right? This follows the naming scheme for their film cameras:

X = Pro cameras (EOS 1V)
XX = "Prosumer" (EOS 30V, EOS Elan 7NE in the US)
XXX = Amateur (EOS 500N, EOS Rebel G in the US)
XXXX = Entry level amateur (EOS 3000V, EOS Rebel K2 in the US)

Yes, I know there are a couple cameras that don't follow this rule (EOS 5D, EOS 3), but those typically blur the line between prosumer and pro cameras.

No, if you're looking to spend around 500 for a DSLR, the D40 is probably the best way to go. Great lens, but if you plan to buy more capable lens, then go with a canon.

I would see if you could pick up something like a used Pentax K10D or a new Olympus E410/E420, or an E510. The Nikon D40 is severely cut down compared to higher end Nikon bodies. The D40 is also not fully-compatible with many Nikon lenses.

Don't bother with a heavily cut down camera when you can find much more capable machines for a similar price. Also, try not let the Canon/Nikon names phase you - at that price range, you are better off sticking away from the big guns and looking at Olympus and Pentax, and perhaps even Sony. I'd take a Sony Alpha A100 over a Nikon D40 any day - better autofocus, nicer screen, image stabilization, and so on.

The D40 is limited to newer AF-S lenses. So lenses with older bayonet mount won't work with AF. But you can still use the lenses, metering, etc work fine, but you're limited to manual focus.

Also, when it comes to lenses for these budget dSLRs, generally speaking, you're not likely to buy the good lenses in either Nikon or Canon. Most cheapo lenses that cost below five hundred bucks are likely EFS or DX lenses that are mediocre in quality. Best advice is to get some good primes that are cheaper. The real value of the system doesn't really show itself until you start making investments in higher end lenses.

Both of which are entry-level DSLR bodies, so I can't see the need for any other body in this category...

Probably to be competing against the Nikon D40, which is sub-$500, compared to the D60 and D80 which sandwich the Rebel XSi in terms of price. Not to mention cheaper competition from Sony Alpha-200/300, Olympus E420, and Pentax K200. All of which are superb cameras.

Sony has 3 entry level DSLRs ranging from $550 to $899. It only makes sense for Canon to throw in another body to compete with Sony. I'm guessing, this would slot between the XTI and XSi. They'd prolly reduce the price of the XTi to around $599

Interesting rumour and seems to be reliable source. Even though there is still the possibility, they planned such a model but later decide against it. Similar to this old rumour about a 3000D with plastic mount...

However most of the other sources of rumour are not worth a cent. This UPC database can be edited by anyone... And these website descriptions are obviously and easily faked, noone except the original poster of this discovery confirmed to have seen it...

The digital rebel is probably the best value DSLR on the market, and always has been. A large assortment of lenses, great picture quality, solid build... and its a Cannon. Its just a great package, and I love to see a new addition that I may have to purchase.

all the rebels are pretty much the same other than the mega pixels and the viewing screens. i have used both the xt and xti and i have found the picture quality the same unless your blowing up the pictures. the only thing that will make a difference on these cameras is the lens
