HTC Touch Diamond dock stealthily makes the scene
We're already big fans of the Touch Diamond's sleek black aesthetic, and it looks like the design language is going to carry over to the official accessories, like the dock. Yeah, it's just a dock with a USB connector and a headphone jack so you can listen to music while charging / syncing your phone, but it's definitely one of the slickest form factors we've seen -- too bad it's listed at £25 ($49).

black is the new white
OneLove @ May 13th 2008 11:34AM
clove so lazy they had to copy the body glove logo?
KFED @ May 13th 2008 3:17AM
That's all nice and fancy, but what about that annoying delayed response with the UI?
It's like driving a nice luxury convertible with a loose steering wheel.
Jamie Marsden @ May 13th 2008 7:11AM
Do you have any basis for claiming a delayed response on the UI? I've seen no reviews out, video or otherwise. If you're talking about the 1st gen HTC touch, then it seems a little unfair to impute the sluggish response to this phone, as this one has more than twice the processing speed.
Phoenix @ May 13th 2008 12:17PM
It's not sluggish. I've seen vids. The only odd thing is zooming in on high-res pictures. And that was on the prototype with only 2/3 of the RAM the final one will have.
fgpx78 @ May 13th 2008 3:46AM
Really pretty, but I think I'll get annoyed with my fingerprint over that slick black.
I want one with a touch pen.
shapey @ May 13th 2008 5:56AM
just wash your hands after eating those donuts!
marty.com.au @ May 13th 2008 6:14AM
Gotta say, that shiny black is a pain in the ass for dust, finger prints, scratches and the like... My viewsonic monitor has a base like that... its a shocker!
what about matt black?
Abuzar @ May 13th 2008 9:31AM
There is a stylus on the bottom.
Phoenix @ May 13th 2008 12:19PM
There's not only a stylus, but it is one of the most advanced ones ever. Removing it turns the device on if it's in standby, removing it when in a call creates a note for the contact you're calling and it's held in magnetically so it can't fall out accidentally.
roole @ May 13th 2008 3:58AM
Wow. This is a beauty. If the user inerface kicks ass, Apple could finally have some (it surely needs some!) genuine competition.
If I was in Cupertino, I'd be paying close attention to this one.
Phoenix @ May 13th 2008 12:13PM
The UI DOES kick ass. Vids are all over the internet.
MasterCKO @ May 13th 2008 1:03PM
I said it from day 1 (iPhone launch day), it would take a little while, but if anyone could do it, HTC would be the one to bring the genuine threat to the new wunderkind on the block...
elijah @ May 13th 2008 3:14PM
don't lie. you never said that on day 1
roole @ May 13th 2008 3:59AM
Sorry, "interface".... (I wish engadget allowed for edits).
happy_penguin @ May 13th 2008 4:24AM
I think I saw this next to the iPhone on the last Cranky Geeks I watched and while I had been initially impressed with it, I was not impressed after what I saw. Feel free, anyone, to correct me if I'm wrong but what I saw was quite a bit bigger and it had some sort of funky magnetically connected keyboard which just looked clunky as hell. While what I saw was quite pretty, it was just not well executed. I wonder if the real competition for the iPhone are the designs which look nothing like it, such as the Tilt and the latest Blackberry models.
Jonathan Buford @ May 13th 2008 4:29AM
Yep, you are wrong, that is the HTC Advantage.
happy_penguin @ May 13th 2008 4:33AM
Ah, thanks for the correction. I didn't like what I saw. Perhaps the HTC Touch is a better design.
Phoenix @ May 13th 2008 12:24PM
Yeah, the Touch Diamond is a much smaller more finger friendly model. It will also be available as the Touch Diamond Pro and Touch Diamond Dual with sliding QWERTY and numeric keypads respectively.
Homeboy @ May 13th 2008 4:38AM
"too bad it's listed at £25 ($49)."
What is that supposed to mean?? You didn't say squat when Apple introduced the iPhone dock an listed it at £29.00 here in the UK!
XenoX101 @ May 13th 2008 4:46AM
Good point.
r3loaded @ May 13th 2008 6:47AM
Don't worry, Americans will probably get the dock for about $35....
PhiKelEd @ May 13th 2008 8:41AM
£25 is resonable I think for something that isn't essential but would look dead good on your desktop. I have spent more on aftershave and I have a face for radio.
computer.dude.28 @ May 13th 2008 8:48AM
I paid $50 for my zune dock, I think it's a reasonable price for a dock.
modified @ May 13th 2008 12:00PM
How is $50 reasonable? It's just an extra usb cable with a plastic case around it. The only reason they cost so much is because they assume since you can afford the expensive device you won't mind getting bent over for the accessories.
Quikboy @ May 13th 2008 5:26AM
Not related to the article, but I thought maybe I should note that Microsoft has finally released their WorldWide Telescope (WWT). You know, the software that allows you to easily explore the universe, get extensive data and imagery, make and share tours, and be a great tool for astronomers. I just thought this might interest some people.
http://worldwidetelescope.org/
I don't think Engadget will post this anyways, since they never did post anything about WWT at all. Consider it's technology and all, I thought it was worth a mention.
Kizorblade @ May 13th 2008 6:08AM
Alternatively, you could have said:
"Wait for the iCosmos from Apple, it will be hyped out of this world!"
I'll leave now.
Zzephyr @ May 13th 2008 10:25AM
Why, that was a totally off-topic, but wonderful post. Thank you, that's a really neat site to explore.
Ike Turner @ May 13th 2008 5:58AM
What? This image has been available on HTC's site since May 6 :

Pradster @ May 13th 2008 6:00AM
is it me or does the touch diamond in a dock look like a zune???
jhoeforth @ May 13th 2008 9:00AM
Totally agree. I've said that before in one of HTC Diamond artciles here in Engadget.
roole @ May 13th 2008 6:55AM
It is you.
Omar Little @ May 13th 2008 6:26AM
"too bad it's listed at $49" ??? Pay to play!
dummy.
Omar Little @ May 13th 2008 6:33AM
Also.. that was supposed to say "< d m x > dummy.", as if the man himself (DMX) repeated his original remarks to IRC (as opposed to myself, who never repeats anything). While I'm sure I was censored because fools try embedding HTML in webpages (also like dummies), it'd be nice if only real HTML was censored, as the IRC nomenclature has been in existence longer. kthx.
T-Bone @ May 13th 2008 8:03AM
Why is the base so huge? It looks as big as the phone itself!
Joel @ May 13th 2008 9:43AM
Forget the dock, what are those sexy ass wireless earbuds, and will they work with my 3G iPhone!? :-)
Phoenix @ May 13th 2008 12:14PM
They're not wireless, you can just see the wires.
Colin Potter @ May 14th 2008 12:02AM
they kind of look like mini bluetooth earpieces... just sayin
PS3guy @ May 13th 2008 10:04AM
That phone look like a Zune lol
danny @ May 13th 2008 12:51PM
i still say black shiny iphone would look great. example- this phone
