Xbox 360 to get a smaller case revision in 2009?
We think we've already got a handle on the various chipset revisions planned for Microsoft's too-beautiful-for-this-world Xbox 360*, but it looks like that planned 45nm "Valhalla" combined CPU / GPU motherboard design we've been hearing about might also come in a redesigned, smaller case. That's certainly news to us, but TG Daily has the refresh happening on the same fall-2009 timeline we've been hearing about, so at least all these sketchy rumors line up. We'll see when we see -- it sounds like the 65nm Jasper units are coming off the line for that August release in the meantime to keep us all warm at night.*Guess which Engadget ed had his 360 go RRoD over the weekend? You only get one try.

I hear it has Blu-Ray LOL
moron
Seriously, who cares? It's great as is, I'm not exactly hurting for room and I like the form factor, they made a good design decision (well, aesthetically at least, not talking about thermally...)
Bring dat chit mon !!!!
I buy ASAP !
P.S. Make sure dat ting has blu-ray mon.
they need to do this sooner rather than later, to steal the march frm PS3, my guess is tho it will be a looong time! add more vents at least, MS!
Yes! So I can get a slim Media Center Extender... Nice...
An AppleTV?
Does Apple Tv work with Live Tv? Can I pause and rewind live TV on a Apple Tv? can I program the recording and burn it to DVD? And sorry.. coverflow is good for people that have no more than 200 albums I have more than 2000 so coverflow doen't work for me. Media Center is still the very best.
I'm going to get an Xbox tonight, I think. Should I wait for Jasper instead?
If I RRoD, would Microsoft give me an upgraded model? How long would it take?
Thanks.
There is one born every minute.
I can't say MS is doing it, but I can say they should.
The current appearance reminds people of how loud and unreliable the Xbox once was (not that it's quiet now, but it's more reliable). A new shape can help dump this association and save on production costs. When the 360 hits 45nm, it'll be a whole lot more empty inside, as it will be putting off about 1/3rd as much heat as it once was and thus require a lot less of a cooling system. Wasted space is wasted money, making it smaller will help reduce the cost.
Additionally, I think soon (surely by 2009) it will be possible for a Core to come with 8GB of NAND, which will be enough storage that it will possible to go without a hard drive. That means it doesn't need the large top space either. With that much built-in storage, there's not a lot of need for two memory card slots either.
There's a lot of stuff that can be removed, a lot of downsizing to do and a lot of cost reduction to be done. These kind of changes mean likely the 360 can reach price targets the original Xbox never did.
I made sure to atleast look for a Falcon unit when I bought my 360. I've only had it less than a month now, which is usually too early to tell troubles. I got the Elite 120GB version and love it. Not so sure I'd upgrade to a new one just for 45nm process, tho.
i got a RROD this weekend too. my solution? open up the plastic case and leave it splayed out under my tv.
works good.
If they make it smaller and more quiet, I'll buy two more to use as extenders... otherwise, any new versions are useless for me.
RRoD is not as bad as the Red Light of Death (the new RRoD) a.k.a error E74. I've been doing some reseach on this E74 and it seems that A LOT of people are getting this error. There is no real fix to this. The only thing you can do is send it to Mircosoft to get it fixed for $100. Atleast with RRoD I can get it fixed for free. BTW I got the RRoD four months before this happened and I baby my xbox 360 too. Microsoft really needs to cover this under the three year warranty.
Now there are 2 well known defects?
It would be nice if MSFT acknowledged that these are defects and not expect people to pay to repair something already defective! If a problem is well documented and not isolated incidents, then it's a defect, plain and simple!
Is it Nilay?
Weird, 2 of my friends on XboxLive just posted their Xbox360s RROD'ed over the weekend. Maybe GTA4 is giving it a workout?
All 360's will break in a three 2 four year period the way they currentyl are built. Everyone I know that had a 360 has had it break on them and they would recieve "the ms shuffle" where you are force to spend hours upon hours on the phone with cs just so the can tell you that all they will ever do is send you a refurb....microsoft needs to fail for the travesty it has put millions of people through. There is no qulity when it comes to the 360. It seems that whenever a new game that is taxing comes out a whole slew of people suffer the demise of the ever so loved 360. To hell with ms. I went through 4 of those pos' and all were crap so now I have a wii/ps3/and a gaming pc ,Spider platform, that only has to deal with a ms os which is at least not ms hardware.
Ah, the Red Rings of Death...
Welcome to the club.
Population - 10 Million and counting. HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Oh, Microsoft.
Been there, done that, went PS3. Problem solved.
(Not only that but I don't need to wear hearing protection while gaming)
(Although the PS3 controller sucks big time)
Yeah, baby, you will be fine failing to update Gran Turismo 5 Prologue after an eternal download, and you shall be playing all of your imaginary friends online
Anyway, this affair with XBOX 360 is crying shame, how could all of this manufacturing negligence or design incompetence could possibly ever take place with such a fine online gaming experience and to frack us, a great community of gamers?
All of this sucks...
Bring back Fighter Ace (on MSN Gaming Zone, of course) and Tie Fighter, I can't stand the pain
Yay! Faster overheating in a smaller box!
Hopefully this one won't sound like a space shuttle taking off in your living room while its powered on.
I hate all of these, rumors, because I am not sure whether or not to get a 360 now!
Microsoft, if you're announcing something, please let it be soon!!!
Man that something, i had plained to buy xbox elite, but now i see that i'll regret this, so i'll wait intell the 45nm version is arrived, although it will take a long time 5-6 month from now i guess, guy's i have one quistion can you change
the question is can you change your charecter vision in halo3 so you will see you full body inestade of your gun only?
