And so forth. If you're like many of us, you very well could be weighing your options as the 3G iPhone seems increasingly imminent. Some might have a wad of cash already laid aside, others might be thinking of jumping ship to one of the iPhone's numerous competitors, or just getting some more months of utility out of their current iPhone. And then there's the trouble of disposing of your existing iPhone when you do upgrade. Do you give it to a friend, mount it on the wall, or bury it in the backyard with the hope of growing it into a cute little iPhone tree? The options are endless. Let us know which way you're leaning.
Just sold my old iPhone and ready for the new one. Sadly, I'm using a crappy Nokia flip until then.
Apple is releasing a new iPhone?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!
I am getting the new one as soon as the unlock is around.
This should be an option in the poll, imo.
I don't care about 3G, I care about a better camera more.
i wouldn't imagine they would put a better camera on it
Nokia makes flip phones? What?
@iofthestorm: does he mean a really old Nokia flip phone, or a Nokia clamshell?
I've been using a crappy Nokia flip for 3 years now. It's a great phone, but it doesn't really do anything else.
Everybody knows that a 3G iPhone is coming, but the other features are still a mystery. Will it have GPS? 3-5 megapixel camera, with video? How restricted with the apps actually be? Is everyone in the app-store going to try to charge for things that jailbroken iPhones currently do for free? Will they allow a proper messenger client? (Signs point to 'no')
I couldn't care less about 3G data. It's not that much faster (and the latency is just as bad). Also, if you can't tether, and Safari won't let you download files, and email doesn't support file attachments, what good is 3G anyway? Is the update going to change all that?
It's the other features that matter - like cut and paste. Unfortunately, we don't currently know anything concrete about the other features.
OMG I did the same exact thing and am using a Nokia 6682 hahahha...Whatever..its so worth it.
Hehe gotta love that picture :)
I know it's totally awesome. Brings me way back to the days of... what was it called now, MUG, I think... or was it MUD). Anyhoo, I only played one but it was damn fun.
As for the iPhone - 3G is too little, too late as far as I'm concerned. There are many great smartphones on the market now, many are better than iphone, at least in the specs (eye candy can only get you so far), and many more will come. And even in the eye candy department the iphone is no longer king, at least as far I'm concerned.
I'm not trashing it by any means, it's a great devices but I think apple is too slow and too stubborn in upgrading and updating it. Plus, it's still way too expensive for what it does.
You gotsa love the throwback to Zork!
Hey - Sell it on Craigslist unlocked for full price (or close)!! I've
sold 2 so far, and both were snapped up right away. Especially with
all the stores being out, you might even make a little $$$...
Love the pic.
Btw-The zork games are freely downloadable now. I also found "hitchhickers guide" awhile back and played it using frotz. I can seem to find the original download link for hitchhikers, but here are some treats:
Frotz (Infocom game emulator platform?):
http://frotz.homeunix.org/frotz/
And found this "Php Zork":
http://thcnet.net/zork/index.php
First!
Also, Can't wait for the 3G iphone, but want to wait to see how it fairs.
*sigh* not first.
cue O&A sound effect:
BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
haha, i love O&A!
seriously, i don't get why you people always wright "first" you don't become cool or popular just because your comment happens to land first
Yes you do.
You never saw that Collegehumor video, did you?
let me kindly link you to it! :D
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1771556
lawl! Nobody can hear me! nobody can hear my comment!
hack it man
Dude..I already beat you to it. I sold my 4GB $299 iPhone for $330 on eBay.
No cancellation fee since I used the pay as you go hack.
3G, 2.0 iPhone...here I come. Now if they drop the price to $199 for the 8GB, that's icing on the cake.
imho, apple wont do this -- if this was their plan, i believe they would be restocking the current models still because they would still be in production.
apple simply would not want to have two competing iphones when they could focus on just one (or two based on storage) skus so there is basically no competition. like i said, no factual basis to this, just using my logic.. take it or leave it.
(on a side note, i did buy a refurbed 16gb today and now must decide whether i am gonna keep it and sell my 8gb unlocked or unlock it and sell it for profit -- i have no interest in 3g as i don't have a data plan)
"Never bought one, and 3G doesn't change a thing."
Oh, Engadget, why do you always put in one option on polls that will completely screw with the results?
I was thinking about it the other way around.
The results seem to be majority none iPhone owners.
They always forget the "I don't give a F#%$!" poll option.
nobody who truly felt that way would bother reading the options, so there's no point listing it.
What Engadget failed to put is the "i'll get one as soon as the jailbreak, activation and unlock hacks get released.
Well, Farris, consider that if there weren't an option like "I don't have one," the anti-fanboys would pick random options (because people love answering polls and because they want to see the results) and would therefore mess with the results.
When the anti-fanboys see the "I don't own an iPhone" option, they see it as their perfect opportunity to prove to the world that no one likes the iPhone, and then are instantly pleased at how skewed the results are in their favor. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Engadget culls anyone that doesn't own an iPhone from the sample and, presto, you have results that are more statistically accurate. Everyone wins!
tl;dr: It's a metaphorical fly trap for Apple haters.
Seriously? I'd go for "I'm never buying an Apple-made phone ever again" and "I regret buying this damn thing in the first place". Oh wait those options aren't on the table.
Mel... do you have said iPhone, or are you just trolling?
I actually have it. I'll spare you my sob story and just say I regret having made the purchase. Its a great phone, don't get me wrong, but Apple can make ownership a nightmare if it tries...
My Verizon contract runs out in January. At that time I will definitely make the leap to something new. However, if the 3G iPhone is impressive enough, I might bail for it now. If the price to escape the contract is low enough, it might be worth it. Then again, I might just deal with the suffering of changing phone number and keep my Verizon until I can get rid of it for no cost.
The main allure of the iPhone is still that it is two devices in one. Right now I carry an iPod and a phone. With the iPhone, I can just carry one thing. That is the number one selling factor of the iPhone, but it is the least touted.
I'm going to use both phones, the 2G and the 3G phone, while walking down the street, just to piss off the Microsoft Fanboys.
... thereby ensuring that anyone that sees you go by will know that you are a doofus
Oooh, ooh! Do it whilst riding a segway, you'll be the envy of everyone who sees you! Heads will literally explode from envy....
.... or not.
True story:
Last year, after the summer-long hoopla, I saw a guy on the bus listening to a touch...
with an iphone on his hip.
:/
Yeah, I'm John Mayer, Yo.
LOL. I'm happy someone got the reference.
Ah, Kirk, my old friend, do you know the Klingon proverb that tells us revenge is a dish that is best served cold? It is very cold in space—Khan, Star Trek II
@ cwj...
an iphone and an ipod touch? No wonder he's riding the bus...
There's my favorite troublemaker, how youbeen? you been kicking winmo ass?
Not fair. I live in Canada and it hasn't been released yet in ANY form.
There should have been a "Not Available Yet" option or else this skews the results.
No kidding. I just want to know when we're getting it. My shitty contract ended in March but I've been sticking with it in anticipation that we'll get a decent data plan with the iPhone.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/29/iphone-finally-coming-to-canada/
I don't know about you, but it's actually coming to rogers "sometime this year". Thats what a Rogers Rep told me, because they did secure the deal to carry the iPhone, but they want a 3G version?. I was actually more interested in the Nokia N95 announcement that took place with the iPhone announcement. So yes, it is coming..... you just have to wait.
*clap clap clap*
The Mysterious Phone Cavern game is hilarious. Someone should totally write a full game -- I'd pay a dollar for it.
I can't believe the iPhone didn't already have 3G, my £40 Sony Ericsson has 3G.
Guess Apple Idiots will buy anything.
Your £40 phone is also a piece of crap. What's your point?
I didn't pay £300 for my piece of crap.
I have to agree, your £40 phone is a piece of crap, simply because it's a Sony Ericsson.
You have a shit phone.
iPhone owners have the best phone on the planet.
What's your point?
I think his point might be that if a cheap shit phone can manage it, maybe the best phone on the planet should've stretched a bit harder.
I think its educational for us all to hear how poor ppls feel about the iphone.
My wife dropped her 4gb iPhone last week (the case I bought her was in her purse of course). It still works in spite of the fall and it's now cracked screen. She will be getting a brand new (to her from me) 8gb in just a few more weeks!
Save a dollar, get her a refurbished iPhone now, then "drop" yours in 6 weeks, Bam your feeling the 3G love!
I think I'm definitely going to have to take the plunge when 3G comes out, my only questions are...
How soon are they going to cut the price after it comes out?
Will AT&T subsidize it right off the bat, or wait for the early adopters to buy first?
I'll take one if it's free.
and that's post worthy because...?
IF it has GPS I will buy one the day it comes out. Oh, and it sure better have A2DP. If it STILL doesn't have A2DP or GPS then there is no way I will buy one.
Seconded.
The lack of true GPS was one of the primary reasons I didn't buy an iPhone, 3G is nice, but if it's still lacking real GPS then I'll just wait for the third generation one.
There are rumors of A2DP support hooks in firmware 2.0, so that's probably just a matter of time.
Mad props for the MUD pic. I'd say it accurately sums up the feelings of most smartphone owners right now... DESPERATELY running away from Windows Mobile but unable to find anything adequate to replace it.
Ever heard of S60?...
dammit engadget - just make love to the 3G Phone already@!!!
As time goes by your avatar become more and more appropriate.
i guess ur not a fan of radiohead.... : (
waiting for the android.......
I will wait for a real comparison between:
1. Xperia.
2. Diamond.
3. iPhone 3G.
After that it is one of them.
Finally! a sensible comment!
I have a Mogul right now, and I am desperate to switch phones, but I will wait longer to make a decision between:
HTC Diamond
3G iphone
Sony Xperia
Samsung Instinct
In the past I have always jumped the gun and have not been completely satisfied with my phone.
Same, but my list also includes Nokia N96.
Translation:
I will try to look unbiased by including the iPhone on my list, but what I'm really trying to say is this: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE DON'T BUY THE IPHONE!
From hell's heart, I stab at thee. For hate's sake, I spit my last breath at thee—Khan, Star Trek II
I'll be going with the HTC Rafael as soon as it hits the shelves.
does the iphone stand a chance with diamond and xperia....even wid 3G
wen these fones are light years ahead in features like HSDPA n HSUPA
who d f*** cares for just 3G???
its just d APPLE IPHONE hype!!!
@Vidit Bhargava: Actually, the iPhone might just have a little much more than you think; 3G is a small part in it, of course this is based on many rumors, and the real news are yet to show up. We almost have solid details of the Diamond and Xperia, but I will have to wait for the iPhone features' announcement.
My problem with the iPhone was the lack of 3G support and all the goodies that come with 3G, such as mobile TV, video calls and high speed internet, also the lack of SDK openness was a no no for me. It seems now that all of these things are to be included in the next iPhone.
So although I use Vista and love some of MS's products, I wouldn't mind a decent, well crafted, solid and stylishly functional phone. :)
Agreed.
X1
HTC Diamond
iPhone
Deathmatch.
Although the iPhone SDK makes it a hard choice. Wait a second, windows mobile SDK has been around forever.. hmmm
For me it all comes down to if there will be less expensive plans. The price of the phone isn't the problem. It's the price of the contract. If I could pay $30 (or less) per month I'd get one. I don't use the phone I have now very much (as a phone - it's only a phone), so I don't need a lot of minutes, I just need it for the occasional "I'm running late" call and emergencies. What I do want is the unlimited data access. So, how about $30 per month for 100 hours of talk and unlimited data? I don't even care about SMS messages. I'll take none. I'd sell my iPod touch and get the iPhone 3G in a minute if a plan like that were offered.
If my awesome mathematical skills don't fail me now, than you are asking for a whopping 6000 minutes for $30 less than the current plan! NEVER going to happen!
wow...is AT&T listening...get a high end fone with excessive talking n unlimited data for $30...thats like selling it for free...
*laughing*
Good old Zork! Damn, I'm old. Any of you young guys recognize the old command line game?
I loved the Hitchhiker's one. It's up on BBC's site even now, and it has pictures and stuff added as well. Brilliant!
Planetfall was awesome (Much like HHGTTG, same co-writer I believe). Suspended was freaking hard, never did finish that one.
This is a new release: iZork 3G
Oh yeah, played most of them on my Digital Rainbow 100 that ran CP/M....good times.
Zork was sooo much fun...Maybe some of y'all even remember Microsoft Adventure...I still have the original map that came with it...
I thank the federal government for giving me a check that will subsidize the purchase.
And I'll have enough left over for an awesome bender.
Shame on you engadget..... Endorsing marketing research as an internet poll that will give apple a reason to invest their advertising dollars in promoting their products as banner ads on your website.
I will admit, it wasn't a bad idea.
We never got the first iPhone here in Denmark so i guess i can look forward to the 3G version, that is assuming Apple will release This one over here
I'm *this close* to paying my Verizon ETF for the iPhone.
Unless of course, I get eaten by a grue.
I thought of waiting a few weeks but now that Computerworld claims AT&T 3G is was faster than Verizon & Sprint, am jumping in, not to mention AT&T said today that it will upgrade its 3G network to run at speeds over 20 megabits per second in 2009.
WHY does windows mobile always have to ruin the party, it was so peaceful in that cave until they came around.
I'm keeping that attitude that:
Hey, i've got an iPhone, and people still go oooh, an iPhone.
I'm waiting for competition from the Android phones!
I want one badly, but att bought cell one here and the network is quite crap. If they upgrade it to 3g I'll buy one, otherwise I'll probably just get the instinct.
I'm covering my ears and going "blah blah blah blah, I can't hear you", because I have an iPhone and I know I won't be able to afford a new one... so I'm going to pretend new ones don't exist.
anyone know if this phone will actually be able to send MMS?
wanna get one for my mom but unfortunately she doesn't want one if she cant forward funny pictures
Does your mother not know how to use e-mail?
Face it, man, Apple is never going to support MMS, unless a third party makes one. Apple doesn't do things just because everyone else is doing it. Apple isn't like other companies that draw up a feature list and call it a day. They will actually remove features if they feel that it's redundant, which is why they support e-mail and not MMS.
So you can stop hoping for MMS right now. It's not going to happen.
I have never, honestly, thrown a chair in my life—Steve Ballmer
Or come out with those "redundant" features in later releases in order to milk, eh, satisfy their users.
why....including features which even a $20 fone wud have....is being redundant or ignorant???
choice is redundant?
Hm.
It is possible one might want to send a message from an area that doesn't have data coverage. E-mail's not always an option.
you know, in all the years i've had service i think i've used MMS a whole lot more. i think i tried email once just to see if it worked.
now picture the general public, who aren't as tech savy as we are. they're used to the simplistic mms way. i think the only people that really use email are the busniess types, and people who have iphones only because they don't have a choice
what's so hard about supporting a standard that's been established since way before apple came into the phone business
My contract with Verizon ends on December 27th. That is when my wife and I will upgrade to iPhones (essentially, they will be our xmas gifts to each other this year).
I hope the price drops (I have no issues signing a 2-year deal with AT&T to get the price drop), so this turns out to be an even sweeter deal then it is now.
I SMELL A WUMPUS.
