LG Display develops small elliptical and circular-shaped LCDs
Oh yeah, round displays have been around the proverbial block before (probably on wheels, which are also akin to a circle), but LG Display is attempting to make a splash of its own in the unorthodox display arena with two new developments. Hailed as the "world's largest 6-inch elliptical and 1.4-inch circular-shaped LCDs," both units are capable of displaying up to 262,000 colors and have a near 160-degree viewing angle. We're told that the devices could eventually find homes in digital photo frames as well as a variety of household / automotive applications, but we won't be getting any further details 'til they're both showcased at SID next week. One more look is waiting after the jump.

it doesn't look natural... almost like it was added in post-processing.
maybe she's fugly and they did us all a favor by adding digital beer goggles?
CraigJ @ May 14th 2008 4:38PM
it's a crop. if you look at the original image it looks more natural...
d @ May 14th 2008 4:18PM
anyone else notice that it's hailed as the "world largest 6 inch elliptical display?" How large can a six-inch display get (past six inches)?
And before you rag on me for not knowing shapes, I do realize that the idea is that they have created the six-inch elliptical display that gets closer to a true circle than any other 6 inch elliptical display. It just seems odd that "world's largest" is directly followed by a size limitation.
Low Ranked @ May 14th 2008 8:22PM
If anything, you'd only be ragged on because of the post above.
strictlymacin @ May 15th 2008 8:16AM
I am your best worst enemy.
Take that!

What happened to her index finger there? I's most definitely bent the incorrect way.

Apparently you have to push on it real hard for it to work

Am I missing something? Her hand looks perfectly normal to me.
Low Ranked @ May 14th 2008 4:17PM
Wait, so just how large is the "world's largest 6" elliptical..." ?
That being said, I am the world's tallest 6' man.
nizzy1115 @ May 14th 2008 5:37PM
You sir are not low ranked anymore. Time for a name change.
Aguiluz @ May 14th 2008 7:08PM

And how can "she" have boy parts? lolz.

@Nizzy:
Your reply suggests you are new around here, however your posting history does not. Where have you been my friend?

Wind-up or 24-hour charge? Either way
virgilatmit @ May 14th 2008 11:10PM
Any idea of the number of pixels on a display like this?

The OPHONE commeth.
Eric @ May 14th 2008 6:08PM
Part of me wants a cellphone watch with a screen like this so bad it hurts...
But the other part of me knows a cellphone watch would require a bluetooth headset that I would never allow myself to use, ever.
joeyrythem @ May 14th 2008 6:24PM
Her finger is BROKEN, forget about the lcd!
Cal @ May 14th 2008 6:28PM
I hope they put an LCD screen which is actually readable in sunlight in these, otherwise it could get a bit embarrassing
Wwhat @ May 15th 2008 8:33AM
They can always add one of those reflective layers and sell them as make-up mirrors that function as phone displays in the dark, perfect gift for girls!
Onetruebill @ May 14th 2008 6:31PM

Now we know that time machines won't be gigantic cars with steam engines and control panel with cog-wheels... But with steam engine and LCD display...
Master Bruce @ May 14th 2008 7:58PM
I'd like to see some nice automotive gauges made from these.
andres @ May 14th 2008 9:28PM
this can only lead to one thing, circular porn
David Z. @ May 14th 2008 11:32PM
Once these get over a foot in diameter, we WILL see these on car wheels.
Wwhat @ May 15th 2008 8:41AM
We don't see square ones on wheels though, explain that.
Wwhat @ May 15th 2008 8:43AM
Well OK we do see displays on bicycle wheels, but those use PoV ( persistence of vision) and LED and can already be circular.

I'd love to have a watch-sized PDA (or at least a meeting reminder plus some other do-dads) that will look like a classically-styled watch and not some borg-ish monstrosity.
Abe Megahed @ May 15th 2008 10:02AM
Very cool,
One question - any idea why the lettering at the bottom of the display in the picture on the LG website very clearly says "LED"? So, which is it - LCD or OLED? Could it be the display used in the Epoq EGP-WP88?
-abe.
Wwhat @ May 15th 2008 5:37PM
I see no mention of any LED anywhere on the LG page linked, and lots of mention of TFT and LCD and that they developed it.
strictlymacin @ May 15th 2008 8:19AM
I still want a watch that can project a laser which cuts through steel. You know the one 007 used.
Wwhat @ May 15th 2008 8:46AM
You know they can already simply use a square LCD and put a circular frame/foil on top and use software to display round stuff, seems odd that this would change so much in the world.
Daveid @ May 17th 2008 9:48AM
"World's largest 6" display" area must be refering to the area of the screen
If it were a 6" widescreen display it would have an area of around 15.4 inches
Since it's circular it has an area of about 28.3
