Official: Swisscom to launch iPhone in Switzerland -- 3G, GPS, mobile TV, video conferencing rumored
So there was a little rumor bouncing about yesterday which claimed that Swisscom would land the iPhone. Today, Swisscom confirmed the deal while saying little else. What's interesting then is what the rest of the rumor, started by the leading Swiss newspaper, Le Matin, had to say. Namely, the 3G iPhone will be on sale in Switzerland this summer (on sale in the US by June) offering 2-way video chats, mobile TV and GPS navigation all powered by an even beefier processor. That certainly sounds like the same 3G iPhone we're expecting to pop at WWDC now doesn't it?

Le Matin isn't a reliable newspaper !!!
DVB-H in the iPhone ? i'm not sure... but
Swisscom has launch his dvb-h service yesterday...
Le Matin has of to make mixture
Surur @ May 14th 2008 5:21AM
So the iPhone will finally get feature parity with today's cellphones?
I can see how that's exciting news.
Esat Dedezade @ May 14th 2008 5:54AM
Whoa Whoa Whoa hang on a minute here.
There's going to be a 3G iPhone?
Cactus @ May 14th 2008 5:23PM
No kidding... calling "Le Matin" Switzerland's leading newspaper is like calling the Boston Herald the leading U.S. paper. It's a tabloid -- witness the Megan Fox naked pic on the front page of the "People" section -- and one that only reaches Switzerland's French minority to boot.
(The Blick would be the NY Post, and the NZZ would be the NY Times...)
/has nothing against Le Matin, or nudity
//would've preferred to see the iPhone land on Orange
///end rant

If it's true, praise be! Praise be! This is news for the US, well ubsustantiated (sp? sorry), due the periodical's history... but still interesting news.
And I seriously doubt, even in europe DVB-H. Totally not apple's style (right now)

Simon @ May 14th 2008 3:42AM
I laugh at apple, they are so far behind the 8 ball with phone technology it's not funny, oh wow, video calls, I have been doing that on my 3.5G (HSDPA) phone now for 2 years, and before that for 2 years with a 3G phone, HSDPA 3.5 G phones are quickly becoming the new standard here. If apple are finally releasing a 3G phone, which it should have been in the first instance, it should be HSDPA or once again they'll be far behind other manufacturers.
Joe Commisso @ May 14th 2008 3:48AM
Apple isn't behind the ball on anything, they know exactly what they are doing. If the original iPhone would've been a do all phone with 3G and all those other features some whine about it not having than what would be the advantages of purchasing a new iPhone a year later that has maybe a better megapixel camera or a faster processor. The folks at Apple are marketing geniuses, & the majority of general buyers are not people like us who read Engadget everyday and demand phones full of specs that most likely aren't being fully used anyways.
Apple has a great skill and making there products become status symbols, and the iPhone is a prime example of that.
Now come June not only will it be a status symbol, but a product capable of much more than the original, that have an easy marketing route by pushing 3G & the enterprise tools of 2.0.
They did everything exactly how they should of, and the results have been obvious if you asked me, they've created one of the most talked about devices of all time.
Kizorblade @ May 14th 2008 3:52AM
"I laugh at apple, they are so far behind the 8 ball with phone technology it's not funny"
You laugh at things which you yourself say aren't funny?
You poor person.
bondsbw @ May 14th 2008 7:20AM
It's a funny thing, this "design" and "presentation" concept.
Everyone knows that Apple is all about experience. My previous phone, the Audiovox SMT5600, was a very well-received smartphone. But I never listened to music on it, I almost never surfed the internet on it (even with Opera, and especially with PIE), and I rarely sent email through it. I do those on a daily basis on the iPhone.
I never even used Java apps. Sure, the iPhone can't do them, but my other phone could and I didn't even use them then.
So, why? It's amazing, actually, because the Audiovox had more features than my iPhone has. Except for a few "insignificant" things:
- No unlimited data. To get unlimited data, I would have to pay AT&T a small fortune every month because the device is classified as a PDA (but it was smaller than an iPhone)
- Processing power: it was capable, but not nearly as much as the iPhone (same can be said about most phones on the market)
- Storage capacity. The iPhone still beats the pants off the market here.
- No free maps. I did MS Streets and Trips + bluetooth GPS. I almost never used the BT GPS since it was such a hassle.
Now, I know this doesn't speak for every device on the market, but this is my experience with a very "capable" smartphone that was brand new two years before the iPhone came out. Others that have price-parity with the iPhone could do more, but they tended to be too bulky for my taste.
The HTC Touch Diamond looks promising, and it's the only phone that looks as appetizing as the new iPhone. I'm far from certain that it's better than what has been rumored for the new iPhone (with only 4 GB capacity), and I'm still waiting for a price point.
Steffen Jobbs @ May 14th 2008 7:40AM
And exactly which world-beater cellphone were you doing all this video conferencing on? I'm sure this amazing cellphone is now the current market leader in smartphones. No I'm sure it wasn't a BlackBerry. A Sony-Ericsson? A Palm Treo? C'mon. We're all dying to know. Never mind. I doubt that anybody gives a flying frack. You can take your handset with it's miniscule 1.5 inch screen and crappy browser and keep it for another two years while the rest of the world buys 3G iPhones.
PSM @ May 14th 2008 8:01AM
My only concern about the 3G iPhone is that it might not have 3.5G. There's no specific evidence for that, only that none of the carrier leaks have mentioned HSDPA speeds in particular. I would be disappointed having to downgrade my connection speed from my current phone, but I would still buy one. All I've been waiting for is 3G and 3rd party apps.
There will be many features that my current phone (Tilt) has that the iPhone does not, but the PITA of using Windows Mobile is not worth those extra features. I want a phone that I can be productive on because I want to use it. I frequently don't write things down in my Tilt because it takes too long and half the time doesn't sync properly anyway. The user experience is equally important as raw power and number of features.
Joe Commisso @ May 14th 2008 3:42AM
I think it's pretty obvious by now June 9th we'll know what the new iPhone is all about and when it will become.
seng @ May 14th 2008 3:45AM
mobileTV in switzerland is steamed over UMTS. Not DVB-H.

Finally it made the ride over the high mountains.
I think it must have live TV because swissscom is making aggresive PR about it.
LordFarkward @ May 14th 2008 4:22AM

*crawls back to hole*
whatphone @ May 14th 2008 4:25AM
I'd like one please. but I just can't be arsed to pay that much for a phone, however nice it is.
and I can't be arsed to rely on apple for everything... like, itunes (updates), no removable battery. ah don't even know what else, all these "rumors" ;). It's just to much. my cheap ass W810i works quite well and has been for quite some time.
anyway. I'll probably start a charity or something to collect some money in order to purchase one.
Twitchy @ May 14th 2008 8:33AM
Mate, an honest question: Have you seen what phones cost before they are subsidised by the Telcos? You are getting a pretty good deal for what it does (sans the subscription raping by AT&T). Innovation has its price - R&D, manufacturing, and assembly isn't done by volunteers.
Alternatively, you could opt for a cheap-as-chips Chinese copy which involves no effort greater than copying someone else's hard work and exploiting workers.
Iceseven @ May 14th 2008 4:36AM
Just for the records:
"Le Matin" is not the leading newspaper in Switzerland. It's the leading newspaper in the french part of Switzerland, which makes up about 20%. If a newspaper can be called the leading one, then it would be the "NZZ" (Neue Züricher Zeitung).
Now all of you Apple fanboys and anti-fanboys may continue with bashing each other.
Jakob Henner @ May 14th 2008 2:52PM
But then.. it's still a credible source ;)
Mic2000 @ May 14th 2008 4:49AM
So now it has a webcam in the front too right?
Phoenix @ May 14th 2008 11:57AM
Not a "webcam" just a camera. if this is true
But i suppose all a webcam is is a low-res camera hooked up to your computer the whole time
Raptor @ May 14th 2008 5:22AM
We have had live TV over UTMS in Switzerland for about a year or more with Swisscom.
What will be an issue is the very high data rates.
raptordemon @ May 14th 2008 5:23AM
Oh and here is the Swisscom teaser in english:
http://www.swisscom.ch/res/iphone/index.htm?languageId=en
Nicolas @ May 14th 2008 5:35AM
"Le Matin" is not a leading newspaper. 1. It's in French, which makes up only 20% of Switzerland. 2. It's at best an informational "brochure". But I guess it's still reliable.

p3t3b2 @ May 14th 2008 11:18AM
For $600 the Iphone in America should have had all of that, Apple just knows how to stick it to people, sadly people keep falling for it.
Nick Ritch @ May 14th 2008 12:40PM
Personally I am jazzed about the 3G iPhone! The Day it comes out is the day my iPhone goes up on fleabay. The thing that sells me on the iPhone is the web browser more than anything. Having 3G will truly make the iPhone's browsing capabilities that much further ahead of every other phone.
Jakob Henner @ May 14th 2008 2:58PM
On the way; both the Nederlands and Scandinavia are rumored :)
