Amex Digital launches iMON HD Mobile portable media center
Amex Digital has certainly dabbled in the home theater space before, but we'll be honest, we're still scratching our heads on this one. The lightly detailed iMON HD Mobile is a self-proclaimed "portable media center," but beyond that, we're pretty much left to wonder what exactly is going on. We are told that it's an advanced IR receiver and VFD display device, and aside from delivering IR commands back to your PC, it'll also scroll across useful information such as news, media information, current time, weather, a graphical equalizer and system details. Guess we'll just hang tight until it gets fleshed out and goes on sale, though we can't say that display really gets our hopes up for anything great.

As for the display on this guy, doesn't it remind you of an HT receiver? The idea of a lightweight Surround Sound amp for your computer sounds good to me . . .
Nice colour though.
If I am not mistaken, this may be useful for people like me who have a tv in one room and the stereo and computer in another. It looks like a device that I can set up in the living room, aim my remote at it and control the computer and other devices in the other room and get feedback from the display as to what I am doing, as well as being able to brows songs, choose inet radio station, etc. I have been looking for a device like this (and thought about building one) But the price will be the key, to me, this is mainly an IR interface and display that should not cost more then a hundred bucks of so. Any more hten that and I think you could just hack your chumby to do this..
This sounds about right. I own one of their internal IR receiver/VFDs and essentially the only point is to receive remote commands and control your home theatre by remote. It sounds like all this new product is going to do is take it to external USB for more flexibility.
Looks a lot like my squeez box. Just cheaper plastic.
Hrm, there are a few of these that've hit the market. As for having this near your TV setup and your stereo and computer in the other room, the only concern is streaming; will it be able to stream 1080p properly? (Thank God, not a single Crysis mention yet... until now :D)
I mean, if we're going to be playing movies off the computer, then we're probably NOT going to be playing discs that we can normally play in our DVD player, so that brings me to my next question; what's the compatability like with XviD and DivX?
I'm sorry if I'm not correct on this, but not all streaming media centres can properly receive/transmit codecs properly?
Just wondering!
Looks a tad plastic-ky,
a bit tacky,
To stream UHDV
would be a tad wacky

It's just the iMon OEM VFD in a tacky enclosure. Exact same remote and all as the one I got with my Thermaltake HTPC case. Wonder if it relays the signals back by IR or if it's radio.
