HTC Advantage X7510 won't be sold in US
Even though we've seen a couple of US e-tailers offering HTC's latest Advantage, the X7510, up for pre-order, it seems that the handheld won't actually be sold here for at least awhile. According to jkOnTheRun, the X7510 possesses one of those hotly-debated Qualcomm chipsets that cannot be sold on American soil -- presumably due to all those legal issues the firm is currently wading through. Of course, folks that just can't fathom living another quarter without one can cough up the requisite dough to snag one from an importer, but otherwise, it looks like you USers are clean out of luck (at least for the moment).

Wouldn't want it anyway. Thanks to all the new ULPC (ultra low-cost PCs) coming out for around half the price of this thing anyway with more features and benefits (x86, larger screen, larger keyboard, real OS)

it doesn't make sense to compare high end pda to ulpc.....

Just saw this on Episode 115 of Cranky Geeks. This guy had one on the show:
Rob Enderle, President, EnderleGroup.com
From what I could see, this thing is a real abomination. The keyboard you are looking at detaches and then is held with a magnet to the cell phone part. The phone has no ear speaker and microphone, you have to use a headset or speakerphone with it. The keypad looked awful to use, worse than a blackberry. Dvorak had a hard time putting it back together.
The worst part, the thing is butt ugly.
Yeah the guy that had it, totaly geekdom. Totally not cool by a long margin.
You can check out the video here:
http://www.crankygeeks.com/2008/05/episode_115_olpc_may_abandon_o_1.php
(Be warned, this is one of the worst episodes of Cranky Geeks I've seen in a long time, the female on there this time was just flat out annoying),
CUBSWILLWIN @ May 17th 2008 12:13PM
Man, I was looking into getting that. HTC is turning bad. Hopefully, they can make up with the diamond.
Christian Walters @ May 17th 2008 2:53PM
mkay, is it just me, or do you have a damn reply to EVERYTHING, and you are ALWAYS 'thinking about' getting one up until you read the story about it here....damn

May 12th 2008 7:34AM I visit india a lot since I'm part indian, and I'd say vodafone is the best because Airtel (Bharti Group) is a bit of a hassle to get a all new phone from them and their customer service is almost like sprints, while vodafone (in india) is pretty amazing in prices and customer service.

I dunno, I don't have a problem with people commenting on whatever they want (I've even become used to useless/non-sense comments thanks to years on the internet), but Cubs just seems like a Sprint-using, Apple-loving, part-Indian, traveling, resident of Chicago that self-admittly says silly/stupid things on occasion and normally does have something to say. It's up to the user (well really it's up to the admins, but you know what I mean), whether or not they are bothered by this.
I stick by "the more the marrier" rule, plus with the option of the masses to vote someone's post down to sewer-level they would get the point if their posts where really un-welcomed.
-On Topic Response Starts Here-
I am personally not interested in any of these low-power mobile devices that fit between a handheld and a normal laptop, but I could see where they have their purpose and consumer base.
Finances are tight for me atm, but as soon as I sell a few more photographs and/or land a good paying videographer/photographer job, I am buying my mum an Apple Air. She hates how slow and bulky/heavy her current Vaio is and she has never been much for the Microsoft way of OSing, so I think she will like OSX (personally I wish Apple would lift the restrictions on the OS and let it run on open hardware and have new drivers legally created for it, but I understand how they think it would cut into their hardware sales and it probably would).
Also before anyone replies regarding running OSX on x64 hardware, I am well aware of all the solutions out there and in fact have been testing them myself since the first public PearPC release, but no matter what you want to tell yourself, it is clearly stated by Apple and the release agreement you have to accept that OSX is only allowed to run on Apple hardware.
CUBSWILLWIN @ May 18th 2008 8:06AM
because of your post, I've just realized I've been commenting like an idiot spammer with no life lately. And I like apple, but never got around to buying one. Used them many times before.
conor @ May 18th 2008 11:48AM
correction: osx can only be legally run on apple branded computers you can buy an old mac tower and gut it install with new parts and it is legal
natels @ Jun 10th 2008 9:30AM
He's a Cubs fan, what do you expect?
Ron @ May 17th 2008 12:16PM
well i think we are gooing to see this more often! the dollar is to low and americans are used to pay near to nothing for their products. it is mutch mor profitable to release it in europe.
JJV @ May 17th 2008 12:44PM
Yeah i sort of agree with you. With the euro being in the sky, more companies are turning to europe because of the profit they can make.
Which is why i do all my shopping in the United States. hehe.
Engadget create a poll asking where we are and where we buy our gadgets from......
Tony Rayo @ May 17th 2008 5:32PM
Even with all of that aside, there seems to be much more of a demand for such hardware in Europe from what I've seen.
Evan @ May 17th 2008 12:21PM
psht, just import it.
derX @ May 17th 2008 4:00PM
But, seriously, do you really want it?
At least for me, this is such a non-issue. It's in a really odd niche. It's too big to be carried around like a regular phone--some people think the TyTn II set this boundary and I'm inclined to agree. And it's too small to be useful like a small laptop because of the keyboard.
Azayzel @ May 17th 2008 12:43PM
While the form-factor is cool, it's really pretty dumb to have a device this large with Windows Mobile on it. Load it up with a real OS and it might be more useful, but it's hampered by that tiny keyboard, ugh. I've played around with the predecessor quite a bit and while sleak, it's not worth it when you can get a nice UMPC or, if you need a phone, get the Diamond.
Archy @ May 17th 2008 12:43PM
Cool product.
HTC實在太屌了
Richard Lai @ May 17th 2008 1:02PM
Hmm... At first I thought you were being rude, as your comment literally translates to "HTC is indeed too fuck" if it was in Cantonese (that's what we speak in Hong Kong), but according to Wikipedia "屌" means "cool" in Taiwanese, but also "fuck" in Cantonese.
That could cause so much trouble...
James Cameron @ May 17th 2008 1:10PM
@Richard Lai
Fcuk HTC. You like?
Richard Lai @ May 17th 2008 5:16PM
@James Cameron: that could work actually (like Ted Baker + HTC).
Ameen @ May 17th 2008 1:12PM
HTC Advantage.. Meh! Big Deal.. Not many people were looking forward to this thing.. Most people would be satisfied with the upcoming cascade of ULPCs (JAmerican _stole_ it! :P)..
Even though it looks cool, the price tag *doesn't* justify much for a half-assed OS, and a dumb concept..

Steffen Jobbs @ May 17th 2008 8:00PM
There are some similarities, but again I must say it's a very poor copy as far as copies go.
roach @ May 17th 2008 8:29PM
Uhm no, it looks like my TC1100.
http://www.pencomputing.com/frames/textblock_tpc_hptc1100.html
Azayzel @ May 18th 2008 4:31PM
The HTC Advantage is nothing at all like the HP TC1100. While it may sport the same half-keyboard, that's where the similarities end. It's much, much smaller and on runs Windows Mobile. The screen is an actual touch-screen like a PDA, which is essentially what this device is; it's nowhere near an UMPC, let alone a TabetPC or laptop. The form-factor looks sleek, but the keyboard is cramped and screen is too small to do any more than view mobile pages. You'd be better off with an iPhone or iPod Touch if you don't need the mobile phone portion. Way over-priced too.
miro @ May 17th 2008 9:30PM
I don't know whether to be happy or sad about this.

As an owner of a X7501, I am OK that they are not selling this here. It lacks the three most useful input devices that the X7500/7501 had:
The joystick (front left of the display) is now gone, there are no buttons on the left side (there were two for OK and Start)
The keyboard on this and previous models is a waste of space. Anyone who has learned Palm Graffiti can use the WM6.0 version of stylus input much faster and there are two more methods as well. There is also predictive text that learns words as you go along.
Quite a powerful device, I just wish that the next US version has at least 32 or 64 GB flash drive, and kick ass video drivers...
And if you think that this compares to an ULPC, you are just looking at the screen size and are horribly mistaken.
With my X7501 I can beam A2DP music to stereo headphone or my car stereo, while using the built in GPS, and still take a call.
DiscoCat5 @ May 19th 2008 6:44AM
it does look cool though
