3G iPhone revealed in third-party case render?
Look, we're not saying this means anything, but the above rendering from iPhone case-maker XSKN sure does look like those supposed design changes we've been hearing about. You'll note the larger, more curvy back, space opened up near the earpiece for the rumored front-facing camera, and what appears to be a non-recessed headphone jack. Sure, this could be a ploy to get eyes on their pages, but even if they're citing the specs we've heard, this is still the first case design we've seen for anything other than the original iPhone.
[Thanks, Brenden]

dam...i think the first gen looks better....was really hopnig to buy this new one though...
Same here, but I've come to never trust early shots of Apple products.
When first shown on Engadget I thought the new iPod Nano looked crap but now in reality it looks awesome.
Im sure this will look at least as good as the first gen when it's released.
Hrmm... still don't know...
iphone is getting fat. lol.
UGLY! omg, if it aint broken.. dont fix it!
it looks more like that knock-off iFone.
its milimeters that matters in design, and this phone just looks bulkier and sillier
all i wanted was 3G and GPS... :(
white_ultras: It has a freaking case on it in the rendering. Of course its going to be fatter than normal.
The iPhone Fatty
It's ready to give birth to the iPhone Nano in 9 months time.
iPhone Chubby™
Does every Apple fanboys digg anything that's Apple related even if it's butt ugly?
pretty sure this is the old iPhone. Just a fugly case. There are no significant changes to the phone itself besides a crappy case that sticks out the back a littl more.
Still has the UI from the original iPhone graphics. No iTunes Store. No Youtube. Old cingular logo.
And the UI is missing the "Installer" Icon!
It's not about the UI, it's about the physical differences.
It wasn't the UI that I was necessarily pointing out, you can just see that since it has the old UI that it's a 'shop of some sort. Whether it was created to depict the actual shape or just to create/"confirm" rumors is another story.
Its supposed to be a "shop". Its a rendering. Its not a photo and no one claimed it was. Its just interesting that a company is making renderings based off of the new specs. Do they have confirmation of these specs from Apple? Have they seen the new iPhone? That's why this is interesting.
they can't put up youtube, itunes, att or even apple (logo on back) due to copy write infringements
That sure is a different look....
oh boy!....oh boy!....oh boy! wait...nevermind, i don't care.
I guess you cared enough to comment.
He thought he would make the lulz. He was all like "Man I'm sooo going to get a Highest Ranked with this one, man I'm good"
"OMFG OMFG OMFG IM GOING TO CUM, LOOK AT THOSE CURVES AND EXTRA MILLIMETERS! WOO! SOOOoo MUCH BETTER!"
I think that's what he was going for.
sorry...just realised that this is just the case...not the actual iphone itself...all is good again :)
Looks like the 3G iPhone needs to use WiiFit and get back down to that 2.5G figure.
oh snap girlfriend!
Someone needs to go on a diet..
The slit in the top is not to allow for the front camera. It is for the sensor to identify whether the backlighting should turn off or not. When you put the phone to your ear the sensor dims the backlight. If the sensor is covered you will not be able to use the phones interface. HENCE. the wide slit at the top! I think its cool though. I'm not into cases though. Cheapens the look IMO.
Chao
Joshua,
We realize the light sensor is there, as well as the proximity sensor, but the difference is how large the opening is and where is is located compared to the old ones. If you go to the xskn page and look at the EXO case for the 1st gen, you'll see that the slot for the sensors is above the ear speaker hole and much smaller. THATS why there might be a camera in there, along with repositioned sensors.
This rendering has "Fail!" written all over it, it's just in invisible ink.
At least the first one didn't look like a toy from the back and sides...
It's supposedly a render, the UI doesn't carry any significance..
FWIW, my iPhone's been displaying "cingular" for the last 2 weeks.
liar.
He might not be, if he lives in a country where Cingular still exists or if he hacked his iPhone, because there is a application that allows you to change the service provider text.
So how bout' it? Are you a hacker, a European, or just a rotten liar?
None of the above.
Jailbroken iPhone being used with AT&T, no app used to change the service provider name. I'm sure I'm not the only one seeing this anomaly.
That was a reply to "Rich", damn reply system really does suck.
Earphone connection is on top - I feel a good move and I am sure someone has said something about that before...
I like thinner tho.
My 2¢
Cheers
The headphone on the iPhone was always on top. What they need to fix is how far the jack is recessed into the case, which, on the current model, makes almost all standard headphones impossible to use because the hood won't fit down into the well.
Who the hel* wants an iphone it's was old when it came out (a nice screen though).
Me, anything with Apple logo I'll buy.
Me, anything with Apple logo I'll steal.
Me, anything with Apple logo I'll defend as if it's the first of it's kind.
Me, just me.
remember when we saw the "spy shots" of the earpiece of the phone that contained the 3 cutouts = ambient light sensor, proximity sensor, and ??? i think i know what the third cutout is for - STATUS. it'll "breathe" like the sleep light on macs but with various color to indicate what's going on. like missed calls, new email, new sms. that's one feature that i miss on the 1st gen.
or, y'know, camera
it turns it its just another proximity sensor, which is also good. The first one worked, but not great. Hopefully this will improve on that!

FAIL
I like the old iphone look better plastic case feel kind of cheap.
Well I for one like it.
No, its a case to make your old iphone look like a 3g iphone, silly.
Uhhh yeah, guys. If you didn't notice that those renderings are from a CASEMAKER. This is why the iPhone is shown with the case attached to it - what makes it look so fat.
Thank you! If you look at their other case (this one is a silicone skin), it's noticeably thinner, and again, it's A CASE.
Vaja has a selection for 3G iPhone cases on their site, but no pics.
The company seems to do a lot of corporate branding. With the new enterprise features in the new 2.0, I'm not all that surprised there releasing these early. Although, Colorware is probably a better option for businesses wanting to keep track of company devices - any employee can take off a case.
Anyone else notice that phone is on Cingular? lol
also.. Engadget.. how do you get away with publising pictures of which you have no rights to copy?
Its called posting an image for review and discussion, and not for profit.
Or something like that.
Either way, its completely legal, I think.

When is someone actually gonna say that IT SUCKS.
Just cause its an iPhone doesn't make it any different than other phones....loads of features don't make up for a fat-as-hell, gross look.
low ranked? wtf this dude is spot on
"Just cause its an iPhone doesn't make it any different than other phones....loads of features don't make up for a fat-as-hell, gross look."
Yes, if you were expecting some people here to actually be consistent.
If this is how the device will look I will guarantee you that:
A) The people saying it is ugly will immediately say how it is "elegant" (see "Fatty Nano"), in order to stay on the bandwagon.
B) Using the words "fat" or "chunky" will vanish from these guy's vocabulary as a way to criticize competing phones.
You have to realize that the absolutes of style that many Apple fanatics adhere to varies based on what's most convent when they need to keep Apple on a pedestal in their minds.
LOL lowest ranked!!! i love it xD
It is only proof to the fandom of these simpletons....
I remember the enV2 comments where everyone was like "oh man its so ugly look how fat it is" and then they come on here and go "uhm ok i think i can get used to it"
I LOVE the other iphone. Its sleek, sexy, and i'd totally marry one (if i had the money...i'm broke lol). But seriously, after seeing this render of what the new one looks like, who is going to buy it if they were put side-to-side?
And the worst part is the people who aren't fans of Apple products that don't have the coconuts to say this. Thanks tom and thanks fred, people who actually get it.
Yeah, I have a hard time believing it will look worse and be bigger than the original. Seems like something Steve Jobs would throw a fit about and not allow. When was the last time a new Apple product was universally considered bigger and uglier than the one that preceded it? Well, I guess the G5 power mac was bigger.. :)
This is NOT the 3G iPhone. Anyone with half a brain can see that it's the current model in a bulky case. I don't know how Engadget missed the telltale signs, but there's no logo on the back, the silent switch is recessed, and there's all kinds of extra black plastic on the face. People who say this looks great are idiots if they think this is the new iPhone, but so are people who say it looks terrible.
Oh, and by the way, the majority of people who ragged on the new nano before it came out didn't realize how small it was. The "fatty" nickname was based on an assumption that it was the same height as the previous generation. That's why everyone changed their tune when it hit stores.
you make no sense. Just cause it's an iPhone is exactly what makes it different. Loads of features? I think you got the wrong phone.
3G does not require that's much space for the new circuits.. That's just nonsense . Look at the European 3G phones.. the original size of the iPhone is more than enough to fit everything necessary to be 3G. I have/had 3G phones for the last 3 Years.. I have video player, Video Calls and recording and internet fast as 24Mbps, no cellphone had to be more fat to be 3G. By the way.. Nokia Rules !
That last bit there about Nokia reminds me of those really stupid, stereotypical jocks whose vocabulary consists of the words testosterone can teach them. "Yea!! Go team!!" *Headbutt*
Not that I am implying you're that stupid, of course...
Kind of sketchy - why would the bezel around the screen (especially the sides) actually be thicker than the first gen? I suppose that might imply that the overall phone might be bigger than 1.0... but when was the last time Jobs let a product be larger than its predecessor
If rthe 3G iPhone has a front facing camera i wonder if it will be declared by the media and remembered by the public as the first phone ever to have a front facing camera and video sharing (nevermind the RAZR2 has it and other phones too). Just like how everyone thinks they were the first to use accelerometers on a touchscreen phone to flip the orientation, or that they were the first touchscreen phone.
I've yet to hear anyone claim that Apple was "the first to use accelerometers on a touchscreen phone to flip the orientation, or that they were the first touchscreen phone."
...only that Apple was the first one to *do it right.* ...which is somewhat subjective.
but Artie MacStrawman is great fun to talk about i guess.
Well, Jeff, if you haven't heard it verbatim (yeah I know were talking about text), then you have had to have seen the numerous postings that have, in so many words, said the exact same thing, and they have used those lines to attack competing phones for not being "original" like the iPhone.
So either you haven't read too many comments here or you are not being honest.
Everyone in the United States, maybe.
Fred... no. Just no. Stop trying to defend people who use a strawman to criticize people who like Apple. If you have an issue with something somebody said, then quote it word for word. Don't use a strawman, don't defend people who use a strawman.
I mean come on, he said "everyone thinks they were the first to use accelerometers". Everyone? Really? Can you show me even one person who thinks that? Stop using strawmen to make arguments. It doesn't work.
I just keep hoping that's not it. It makes the current iPhone look like the coming new one.
Hoping this isn't the design... BUT, let's wait until we hear what's different from Apple. I seem to be in the minority, but playing music and trying to surf the web usually ended up crashing Safari (or other apps.) Perhaps the extra 'heft' will equal more stability. Or maybe some other stuff that pushes the interface?
I think it has more to do with a battery life then the 3g circuitry, 3g combined with the screen...= dat shit ^^^^
I don't like at all, I prefer the same design but with 3G and a lot of things more
I find it hard to believe that anyone would design a phone that wouldn't sit flat on a table. The rendering points to a phone that would rock itself to sleep if it is correct. Imagine that sitting on your dashboard!
The changes to the bottom are interesting. The other leaked renderings showed that the speaker holes changed. I wonder if apple is trying to make the bottom of the iPhone accessory connection friendly. I wonder if the new speaker "holes" would also function as some sort of accessory connector used to "lock" the connector to the phone.
All I care about it the price of the new iPhone. If it is cheaper, I'm on it. $199 and i am in line - even if that means getting an older model.
You people are going at it again. You see some rumored rendering and all of a sudden you believe that's what the iPhone is going to look exactly like. These photos mean absolutely nothing. You people just won't learn. You'll know exactly what the 3G iPhone looks like when it announced. Until then, your comments mean nothing.
Some jacktard said this had FAIL written all over it. Must have been spawned from the same group of 'tards that said the iPhone would never sell in quantity because they weren't in the cellphone game long enough. I think that statement from the Palm CEO and we know where they have gone. To Toiletsville. Talk about visionaries.
It's difficult to imagine that a device that sells over 12 million units in a year could be a failure, but I guess if it's based on a potential billion user base, maybe it can be seen as a failure (so far). In that case it's gonna take about 3 more years to sell a hundred million iPhone units. I'll take that kind of failure any day.
Your comment doesn't mean anything either?
iPhone isn't a standard cellphone, but a high-end, compares to N95. If Nokia sells more N95's than iPhone's, maybe it's a fail, but I really don't think.
B&O doesn't sells million of flatscreens every year, the market is completely different than eg. Samsung's market.
Maybe Apple would gain a bigger market if they released a sub-$99 phone, maybe B&O would gain a bigger market if they made cheap flatscreens.
I don't think this is the real deal, people don't want a bigger phone, but yes it could be possible, we will find out soon. I like the back and more clean design (except for the size)
;)

It's difficult to imagine that an OS that 100 million+ users have is a "failure too", but according to "standards" Apple users like to apply to other companies brands, it is. What's your point?
If you guys use this type of flawed logic to paint products that compete with Apple as failures for purposes of denigrating them, then dont be surprised when people use it against Apple devices to do the same thing.
Last time I checked, Steffen, the iPhone had sold around 5 million whilst the N95 is cruising along at 10 million+. Yahhh trick yahhh!
Fred. Strawmen. Stop using them to make points. It doesn't work. if you can quote somebody, then do it. Otherwise, you don't have a point to make.
are you mr apple?
steve,i wont tell
just ship me an iphone
v2 of course
NO,how about a discount
some apple socks then
ahh well dream on
Amazing how many gadget "Experts" are on here who probably couldn't fix a busted Nintendo system.
The 3G iPhone with all the new features, GPS, etc, is going to consumer more power. To get similar battery performance to the current iPhone (a battery that will last all day if you use the device lke crazy) the battery is going to have to be bigger which makes the phone bigger.
Idiots.
If that doesn't suit you than go ahead and get a slimmed down Pocket PC that is lucky to last 1/2 a day on a battery charge and loses all of the other cool features that the iPhone has.
Ya, I think people are missing the point here, thicker probably isn't bad. It was really thin for a smart phone to begin with. I'd take a little thicker phone if it comes with more features.
This does not look so hot. I'm not enjoying the border around the screen.
hmmm...Apple got away by convincing people iMac was thinner than it is by having the bulge part in the center and keeping the edge thin. I don't think they can get away this time.
Apple convinced people it was thinner than it is? How exactly did they do that again? I mean in their pictures of it you can clearly see the bulge, so I'm not sure what kind of point you're trying to make here. Was Apple trying to hide it or something? Please elaborate.
Well Zak. Let me tell you about design illusion.
Lets talk about imac.
http://www.apple.com/imac/design/
If you look at the metal strip (side view), that's thinness (illusion) that its suppose to give. The different material (metal and black plastic) helps it greatly. But the fact fact is that it's thicker than it is.
The same design illusion (thin edge and keeping the bulge in the center) they're trying to do to mba.
http://www.apple.com/macbookair/design.html
If you look at the photo, you'll notice how this angle make the mba thinner than it is.
http://www.apple.com/macbookair/
But they can only go so far with this illusion. Apple seems to be infatuated with thin products, but the iphone is one fat ass.
@Zak, Apple does do use that illusion...although I would argue that Apple has done some amazing work in thinning products, bulge or no bulge.
i'm selling off my stock if this is really what the 3g looks like... I'm 100% positive that apple wouldn't make something this ugly...
It's like that hot girlfriend with a hot body you first went out with, then years later you notice she starts developing a bulging stomach and fatter ass.
She is still hot (face), but the beginning of the horizontal phase .
"Hey baby, I think I need to start exercising and it would be cool if you keep me company."
Has nobody mentioned the copyright date? April 2nd. A month before any rumours even started circulating that case makers were getting dimensional specs.
This is:
A) A case render for example purposes only, and
B) A way for XSKN to drive traffic to their site and increase product awareness by labelling it a 3G case and thus making the news.
Well played, XSKN. Well played.
Have you noticed it's leaked today, it could be from April 2nd, but probably just some days old. (:
Can anyone say media stunt? I for one dought that Steve Jobs would change approach to design and development at this point.
Fat is the only change that this so called render has added to the original iPhone. I honestly think it will be 2-3 milli thinner. Isn't that what innovation is all about?
Here's my side render of what I think the 3G iPhone might look like, it's only around 2mm thinner than the original render, though it looks more:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/eckofish/2456836669/
"Fat is the only change that this so called render has added to the original iPhone. I honestly think it will be 2-3 milli thinner. Isn't that what innovation is all about?"
Are you kidding?
That is a FIRST GEN iPhone with a CASE. No new phone there.
"3G iPhone revealed in third-party case render?"
I understand that "3G iPhone revealed" makes everyone excited that maybe they'll finally get to start sizing up whether one of these bad boys will make it into pockets across the world, but I don't know how everybody is missing the fact that this is a "third-party case render" which shows itself wrapped around what looks like the base and screen of the current iPhone.
Again, a case for an iPhone, or at least what they think is going to be the 3g iPhone. I don't think it could be any clearer.
i dont know why you are all in a tizzy over this thing... at&ts 3G coverage sucks in the US. Available only in larger metro areas. It wont be worth it to get this phone for most of you who arent fortunate enough to live in those areas.
What about Europe? ;)
700 mio.
Looks fake. I'm sure Apple will improve upon the 1st generation of iPhones. Not the other way around!
