Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 vs HTC Touch Diamond... fight!
We're not sure how they pulled it off, so kudos to CNMO for snapping the HTC Touch Diamond up against the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. Undoubtedly the world's most hotly anticipated cellphones this side of the still fictional 3G iPhone and Nokia Tube. While the Xperia X1 definitely sports some extra chub, remember, there's an arc sliding QWERTY tucked beneath that WVGA display. Hit the read link for bigger pics.
Update: Ah, so that's how CNMO did it. They stole the pics from WMExperts and added their watermark. Crafty. Post updated with proper source.

I WANT BOTH!

Not sure how this guy got his hand on the XperiaX1 but it's pretty sweet.

Each device has it's good and, good! It is so hard to pick up one, and it all comes to personal preference on how you want to type on your device. I'm still waiting for the iPhone 3G though.
In my opinion, we should start using on screen keyboards, just to adapt with the future of these things, especially if they include vibrating feedback for keyboard clicks.
I'm excited. :)
paakofi @ May 19th 2008 8:46AM
Hahaha, how about an exchange Thuraya? You give me the duck and I start supporting Arsenal for 1 season? ;D
Dalia, I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience I've caused for you by playing that online game. If required, I can take actions based on your desire, if it is really bothering you that I was trying to be fun, then I don't have a choice but to follow your orders. What say you? :)
Mike C @ May 19th 2008 10:39AM
You want the wave of the future? Thought to text. Until then, I'd like to use the bundles of nerves in my "reason humanity is on top" opposable thumbs to feel what I'm hitting so I don't have to stare at the keys, nor try to use the side of my fingernail to try and "press" the key I'm looking for.
Ricky @ May 19th 2008 5:22AM
Hardware keyboards are a must, whether an on-screen keyboard has vibrating input notification is irrelevant, It'll never be the same as a physical button.
From an outsiders point of view I'd recommend the Xperia due to HTC's recent lack of support for device issues, e.g. lack of drivers for the Kaiser's graphics chip.
But from my point of view, I get an updated device every 12-18 months, and with WM7 releasing in Q4 2008, I see no reason to purchase either of these devices.
Tombio @ May 19th 2008 5:41AM
I thought that hardware keyboard was a must before one device without it proved me wrong. It only depends on how the sw keyboard is implemented. I admit that there are some inconveniences with having only sw keyboard, but so there is for hw keyboard.
I don't want to turn this into a yes-no-yes-no fight so I'll just say that I'd rather have good on-screen keyboard and reduce the size of device by the size of physical qwerty.

Xperia > *

Even though I'm a diehard SE fan, I don't think X1 is even worth mentioning anymore. Not only does it run Windows Mobile, it's also being released months after the 3G iPhone and the Diamond, but possibly even after the Samsung Instinct and Nokia N96. And at the same time, it's going to cost more than all of the above.
Dan Davis @ May 19th 2008 10:53AM
For clarification, they BOTH run Windows Mobile...
twistfunk @ May 19th 2008 5:46AM
i have a good feeling about winmo8
Ysleiro @ May 19th 2008 10:07AM
Do you think the X1 will be upgradable to the new WinMo that releases a couple of months after X1 releases?
Will the "Panels" still work?
John @ May 19th 2008 6:00AM
I think the diamond is better because of the screen type....iPhone like glass.
but the speria x1 is sweeeet
James @ May 19th 2008 6:33AM
Those photos show the HTC Diamond as being a fingerprint heaven - that would just bug me too much, shame really because it's such a nice design.

They didn't.
Instead, they just copy-n-pasted the WMExperts article by Dieter Bohn:

Cool, huh?
cxp3 @ May 19th 2008 6:39AM
Isn't the Xperia supposed to have a WVGA screen not VGA as it says above?
NightBlade @ May 19th 2008 7:02AM
True.
Ryan Trevisol @ May 19th 2008 6:43AM
Wow, the X1 is a fatty! For once HTC's the one bringing the skinny. I'm impressed.
damo @ May 19th 2008 9:01AM
Keyboard
SimbaDogg @ May 19th 2008 9:01AM
have you ever considered that 1) the xperia is made by htc...2) it has a full keyboard
:shakes head:
Ryan Trevisol @ May 19th 2008 9:20AM
Well then this "fight" post is pretty useless, isn't it? It'd be like a "Samsung U940 vs. Instinct: fight!" post, wouldn't it?
aahatimy @ May 19th 2008 7:18AM
Does the Diamond have multitouch or whatever it's called?
Surur @ May 19th 2008 8:26AM
No, the Diamond does not let you zoom pictures or web pages with two hands. Thats about the only thing the iPhone uses it for, and the HTC device uses gestures or the Zune-like scroll wheel in from for the same job using only one hand.
In return, the Diamond lets you write accurately on the screen, unlike the finger painting done on the iPhone.
maff @ May 19th 2008 8:11AM
still fictional iphone 3G? there's probs people out there beta testing them right now
KEROLiUKAS @ May 19th 2008 9:04AM
Engadget is a bitch sometimes, when my photos got stolen and watermarked, and posted here, no one cared...
Steffen Jobbs @ May 19th 2008 9:30AM
I WANT NEITHER!
Fair matchup. This time Engadget picked a balanced fighting match. Two feather-punching, second-class contenders for the world's heavyweight, smartphone crown. Let these WinMo 6.1 lightweights slug it out for third and fourth place behind the BlackBerry Bold and the 3G iPhone. Of course, the 3G iPhone will win the smartphone crown by way of a strong OS X TKO in about ten seconds. Woohoo. The winnah and still champion of da world ....iPhone.
Both the Diamond and Xperia XP1 really look good lying on the canvas where they belong.
Phoenix @ May 19th 2008 9:55AM
...go to hell
People want different things.
Some people want a flashy media-centric featurephone with a few smartphone-esque qualities.
They should buy an iPhone
Some people want a powerful device with the ability to install ANY app they want. If they want a keyboard get a X1 or a Raphael. If they don't they should get a Touch Diamond.
Ysleiro @ May 19th 2008 10:09AM
You know there are ways of being a fanboy and still not sound ignorant. IMO this comparison was not fair to the X1. X1 has a physical keyboard where as the Diamond does not.
Raphael VS Xperia is fair. iPhone VS Diamond is fair.
Nonetheless it was a good comparison.
roach @ May 19th 2008 12:19PM
I had the itouch for about a month and it didn't work for me. I think a combonation of screen touch and keyboard would work for me. Its xperia for me, but I must say garmin's phone gps capabilities may sway me back into screen keyboards.
Yor1001 @ May 19th 2008 4:12PM
What is this called again....Oh yeah blind fanboism.
Vidit Bhargava @ May 19th 2008 9:52AM
well...well...here's a rightly competition....2 gadgets laden with about the same features and rightly compared....did someone mention the iphone winning??? well its 3.5G age dude....these two phones are "backward compatible" with 3G and will be rightly called smartphones. also...BB bold does not even have a touch screen....we have also just "heard" of iphone 3G coming out...no clues on specs etc....whats apple hiding the specs for? is there a mystery spec they are gonna launch that is never even heard of???
well...atleast htc and se have launched there products with full specs on their websites....
i would like to see a matchup between these two :)
these 2 have almost the same specs but diamond is tri-band while x1 is quadband...diamond is compatible with GPS and aGPS while x1 only aGPS...both run WinMo 6.1 and have their own cool interfaces...and have the more or less the same hardware...lets see which one comes out the winner.
Phoenix @ May 19th 2008 9:56AM
Not really, the Touch Diamond has an extra 64mb of RAM. And then there's the Raphael, Touch Diamond with a keyboard, rumoured and probably released soon ;)
Szeki @ Jun 11th 2008 4:32PM
Hi
I have just got an HTC Touch Diamond. It is really cool, however I1m a bit disappointed as I cannot use the GPS function. I find in every specification that this pda has a GPS function (GPS and A-GPS ready), still when I installed iGo 2006, it cannot recognize it. The question is: does it have a built-in GPS and it's supported only by some programs or it doesn't have any and can be used only with an external GPS receiver?
If anybody knwos the answere, please tell me.
Is it possible that there are different versions of the product and I got one w/o the GPS?
Thanx,
Szeki
Ysleiro @ May 19th 2008 10:01AM
I'm really looking foward to the X1 release. But there is only one drag.
Does anybody know if it will be upgradable to the new WinMo that releases a couple months after X1 comes out?
If it is upgradable, will the "Panels" still work?
Phoenix @ May 19th 2008 10:15AM
what new version? Are you talking about 7? I REALLY doubt it will be out soon enough for taht to be an issue
Ysleiro @ May 19th 2008 10:34AM
I'm sorry.
I took the word of an idiot and thought 7 was releasing Q4 08 when in fact it looks like Q3-Q4 09
mattworldwide @ May 19th 2008 10:08AM
I'm a phone noob. Will these phones use the google Android?
Vidit Bhargava @ May 19th 2008 10:10AM
dude....did you read at all about these phones....they specifically use Windows Mobile 6.1
Ysleiro @ May 19th 2008 10:21AM
He's a noob. Take it easy on him.
These phones will be using WinMo operating system. Where as phones that will use the Android will specifically state so.
The Android is an operating system just like the ones made by MS, Apple, Symbian etc... Obviously each has their differences.
mattworldwide @ May 19th 2008 10:28AM
Thanks, Ysleiro! Helps me out a lot. : )

I´m waitin´ for the MWg Flame II with WM7 in Q4:)
Vidit Bhargava @ May 19th 2008 12:18PM
MWg products are manufactured by O2...ryt???
Phoenix @ May 19th 2008 12:49PM
Well no... MWg WAS o2. And O2 have only rarely (and recently) made their own devices... before that was just HTC. And I think MWg MAKES the devices that used to be o2..
I'm confused, but unless I'm missing an ODM somewhere I think it was MWg that made o2 phones...
Gero @ May 19th 2008 1:20PM
MWg is manufactured by Expansys:
