ATX proposes .car TLD for expected influx of in-car internet users
With the ability to surf the web in-car inevitably coming to more and more motorcars, ATX Group, the self-proclaimed "largest independent telematics services provider to the automotive industry," has announced an initiative with the Connected Vehicle Trade Association to "convene an international work group to address how to safely access internet content through embedded and nomadic devices in vehicles." Aside from that, it's also proposing a generic top-level domain -- .car -- that would presumably dumb down websites for use in the vehicle. Of course, you won't find us cheering on a movement to generate yet another worthless TLD, but we'd certainly be down with text-to-speech software that read the latest gadget headlines (just an example, is all) aloud as you cruised the freeway.

i think internet in the car should be on the passenger's side only.
Agreed.
I fully agree, I might even add by arguing that any interface that takes the drivers attention from the road should lock itself whilst the car is in motion.
Why BMW and Mercedes didn't put in touch based controls as opposed to those outright dangerous finger wheels is beyond me.
until cars are able to intelligently drive themselves i think it is absolutely unnecessary for us to talk about internet in a car and domains and so on
on the passenger side it is okay, yes but for this to be in a production model would mean everyone would want it (as it is factored in cost) and im sure that the extra rise in car cost would be greater than you buying yourself a mobile phone with a bigger screen or one of them tiny laptops which are both portable, programmable and flexible.
poor idea right for now.
Read the blog while driving! Keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the screen! Just don't start the engine since you'll most probably crash :)
Using a human mind for basic navigation and lane tracking is overkill. I hope we're past that soon.
Is that BMW interior I smell from that image???
Indeed it is, and it's killing me! My new 335i is on a boat on it's way over. Now even Engadget is teasing me!
Haha! I bet, man! I ordered an M3 in 2001, and it was killing me waiting, for it, but the reward in seeing the trailer with that thing in there, fresh from the factory...MMMMMM.... That's all I can say. I want a 335i SO bad. I am very Happy for you! You can get so much power just by plugging a little module in between the plug that runs to your ECU, and they can't read that it's been boosted. They warranty the motor, also, from what I remember. It's a lot faster than the new M3. You can pull off 11.9's on stock rubber, and the stock (Non M) differential. You are getting into Ferrari Enzo, and Porsche Carrera GT V-10 territory if you put a limited slip Diff. up under it, and some sticky tires. Anyway, Good Luck! Enjoy some driving on the new platform, for me, please :-)
lol, TLD -> TDL
great, porn in the car. People can't drive on cell phones and we are going to enable everyone to now talk on a cell as they read the news on their dash board while eating a cheeseburger, smoking a cig, and putting on their makeup.
Maybe I should move to NY where most people walk!
All though I guess we should put in pic in pic so we can use a camera to watch the road while we watch NASCAR on the internet and at the same time pay the tickets we got for running a red light yesterday.
The Apple iCar Pro. Only in brushed aluminum.
Ok I need coffee so I can ramble properly.
you mean TLD not TDL
Damn, I saw that too!
Boobies
Not to mention the fact that using random acronyms is not a good idea for the title. Not everyone knows what TLD (well, TDL, in this case) stands for.
Ridicilous.
How about a .phone for mobile phones and .pda for pda computers and of course .pc for regular computer users..
And of course .mac for Macs so the sites can dumb down for them ;)
All these new TLDs are getting ridiculous!
I mean did anyone actually buy a .mobi domain?
It's just another way for ICANN/Internic to get more money from massive companies like Google/MS/AOL etc who will be forced to buy the names to secure them, even if they have no intent to use them.
How about just making the subdomain car.domain.com standard practice instead?
Like wap.domain.com or mobile.domain.com was and sort of still is
Oh that's right, they're free to set up so no money for Internic
Also, what's the point in .car anyway?
So people can run their own web servers from their cars and .car tells you it's a car server?
Stop it!!!
haven't you heard of .mobi for mobile phones?
I really fail to see the need for a new TLD because more people are expected to access the internet from a car.
What's the difference to simply browsing on the existing ones?
None, except someone's profits on the overpriced registration costs that is!
It used to be, at least in my state, when portable TVs were the only consumer devices with a visual display, that they were'nt allowed to be used in the front seat area while the car was in motion. I want to know why this law went away, and why an Internet device is any less distracting to a driver than a television.
I say backseat at least, trunk maybe.Temptation for some morons would be too great. Do we really need to be that connected?
I'm sure most systems will follow suit with BMW's ConnectedDrive system and only allow you to browse the internet when stopped. I think this really is a required restriction, otherwise you will have idiots trying to use it while driving.
I guess the better question is, isn't there plenty of other ways to access the internet in a car without having something bolted to the dash? On top of that, what would .car offer that existing mobile would not?
I don't know maybe I'm just the purist that actually gets in their car to drive from point A to point B and would see very little interest in having a screen bolted to my dash to give me the very latest up to the minute info of the WWW.
ATX proposes .car TDL for expected influx of car crashes
ATX is a press release creation company. What they say doesn't matter at all.
RSS Text to Speech. No worse than talk radio in the car.

Easy.
I'm holding out for .can. Toilet surfing has never been so good.
