It took 'em a year, but iriver is finally ready to unleash its
P10 touchscreen mega-PMP upon the world -- or at least Korea. The player rocks T-DMB, an 800 x 480 4.3-inch LCD, 33GB of storage and quite unique UI. There's also an included stylus and built-in handwriting recognition, with dictionaries for English, Chinese and Japanese. For about $312 US you can get a DMB-free unit, or spring for mobile TV at a $390-ish pricepoint, but again, those are both Korea only. If you're looking to spice up your life this side of the Pacific, iriver is also bringing its
D5 clamshell multimedia dictionary to the States, at $300 for 2GB and $350 for 4GB.

33GB is an odd number... but I wouldn't mind getting my hands on one of those.
Liam @ May 20th 2008 10:17AM
I'd guess... that's not simply the disk spec. 1GB is slightly smaller, according to disk manufacturers, than it is to everyone else. Maybe iriver actually plugged it into a computer, and checked what the usable space was. I'd welcome this, it's a bit annoying when buy a new player and realise you've got less space than you thought.

Menu = Fail
MBS @ May 20th 2008 9:47AM
Yes, they definitely should have copied apple's UI instead then you would have had nothing to complain about. Ohh wait...
Your comment === FAIL
Coleman Foley @ May 20th 2008 12:08PM
why didn't they make the buttons bigger so they'd be easier to push? the buttons should stretch to the edges of the screen. also, with a screen that big, your thumbs can't reach the middle as easily as the sides
Vhausse @ May 20th 2008 9:40AM
Unique UI? Looks like a blatent steal from Apple.
Vidit Bhargava @ May 20th 2008 9:45AM
Isn't it amazing how everything these days comes to be "stolen" from apple.
MBS @ May 20th 2008 9:51AM
@Vidit: It has a menu bar on top! Duh, Apple copy. Never mind those oddly sized colored boxes, they do not matter.
Get with the program:
If it's any good then it's copied from Apple and deserves to be blasted for it. If it's unique and new, then it's crappy and unusable and they should have copied Apple (the pinnacle of form and usability).
Vidit Bhargava @ May 20th 2008 9:56AM
wow....if it uses a menu bar at the top then its a copy from Apple??? dude...then Ubuntu is also a copy of Apple....if I put my Windows taskbar at the top then also I'm copying Apple...if Im eating an apple...then I'm copying Apple...wow everybody's copying apple
if this is a great device then why cant Apple come up with something like this...which is atleast useful, easy to use and not crappy
i wonder why apple fans are unable to accept that there are devices which are better than apple's crappy and expensive things
MBS @ May 20th 2008 9:58AM
Now you're getting it ;)
Vidit Bhargava @ May 20th 2008 10:03AM
yeah i got it now...he he he he
happy_penguin @ May 20th 2008 10:19AM
Yeah, menu bar but so what. Lots of OSs have a menu bar. The rest of it looks nothing like Apple. Apple rip off? No.
Vidit Bhargava @ May 20th 2008 10:23AM
yeah right dude....would you ever care to say that the so called "accelerometer" used in the iphone was actually first used in petty canon digital cameras...you wont say apple copied right??? also that it was sony ericsson which first came up with the idea of using it in games
its just that these little things are hyped by apple to make them their publicity stints.
CosterMonger @ May 20th 2008 11:23AM
Apple borrowed from Xerox Parc, for Lisa
and borrowed from BSD, via NEXT, for OSX
anyways it says "Main" which is pretty sweet, not File or Finder or apple-with elliptical-bite-out-of-it-shaped-thing. Love that desktop.
Vic the One @ May 20th 2008 12:43PM
Calm down, people... OP was "blatently" kidding...
Also, this thing is beautiful. I love the simple and yet artistic look of its UI. I cant wait to get my hands on it and try it out.
rhcpsfan @ May 20th 2008 2:45PM
you are all idiots if you cant see the fact that he is kidding.probably just trying to get a rise out of the huge amount of engadget readers who say they hate apple ,but, in reality, probably own at least one or more apple products that they are too ashamed to admit they like. guys , plase , just because you dont worship the ground a company stands on doesnt meen you should hate them.
karts41 @ May 21st 2008 12:36AM
reminds me of how everything manages to cause cancer these days.
crescentdavid @ May 20th 2008 9:43AM
Menu=Simply Beautiful. Form follows function. With the exception of a comment, I would have said it makes the UI idiot proof. Alas, I'd forgotten the iDiot factor. That it also supports word, excel, pdf and is an e-reader adds to its value. It's a beautiful design as well.
Naturally, it's only available in Korea. The US will get bleeding edge PMP tech ... sometimes in the next year or two.
Froggy @ May 20th 2008 3:03PM
so cute, so white. must find ways to use for evil.
Tim @ May 20th 2008 9:45AM
if 2/3 battery life really lasts over 8 minutes, thats pretty good for a screen that size, especially if its hdd based, which it may not be.
Vidit Bhargava @ May 20th 2008 9:48AM
P10 looks to be a beautiful design...wonder how this would function. Have been using their gen 2 clix...which is simply an awesome device. Hope this turns out to be the same. Looks to be a neat and simple UI....and that too with touch screen...they build the best players....u rock iriver
wonder when this will be available in the US....why can't manufacturers in the US build such devices???
MBS @ May 20th 2008 10:11AM
There is a plethora of Chinese and Korean made PMPs that have good to great hardware and touch screens.
Unfortunately none of those manufacturers seems to ever be very concerned with the UI. At best, you can hope for a reasonably decent iPod clone.
IRiver has in my opinion always made very user friendly PMPs. Maybe this is why it's been taking them so long to come out with a real touch screen PMP; because they have been working on making an IRiver-worthy UI for it?
Vidit Bhargava @ May 20th 2008 10:19AM
dude...you should change the word "made" to something else because all the ipods and iphones are also "made in china" :)
well...yeah they take their own time to come out with a new thing but it is always worth the wait
try an iriver clix2 sometime...you'll notice a BIG difference in sound quality and ease-of-use...have you heard of AMOLED screens??? these chinese and korean brands are using the most advanced screens available today :)
aron @ May 20th 2008 12:52PM
Excuse me, but there's more to ethnic Chinese than "mainland" China. Many of us from Taiwan (hell, it's officially called Republic of China and was recognized as China by the UN until the 70s), HK and Singapore are ethnically Chinese, consider ourselves Chinese, and demonstrate that we are capable of producing and designing products that are definitely on par with the world's best, ie-Acer, Asus, BenQ. Calling Chinese products "crap" because of the bad apples in the PRC is like saying Koreans can't make crap because of North Koreans can't make crap.
I'm so sick of the blatant anti-Sino racism here that everyone seems to find amusing/funny, or at best, turn a blind eye to.
Funkdafied @ May 20th 2008 9:50AM
1. Can it play x264 videos?
2. If so, what res?
MBS @ May 20th 2008 10:00AM
At least with there being a DMB-less version from the get go, there is some hope of us seeing it here in the US.
evo31337 @ May 20th 2008 10:16AM

dominiking @ May 20th 2008 10:21AM
the P10 seems to be very nice but the price point for the D5 and the amount of space it has doesn't match up very well in my book
Ethan @ May 20th 2008 10:51AM
I want to see how this thing reads text.
Steffen Jobbs @ May 20th 2008 10:59AM
Yeh, that is nice. I'd want the Japanese and English dictionaries and if I could input in both kanji and romanji it would be even better. It would be good if you could add dictionaries and individual words. I know this will never come to the U.S. This is how the iPod touch should have been when it first came out including at least 32 GB of storage. I wonder if this PMP supports a lot of video codecs. Oh, well.
Hopefully when the App store opens there will be some E/J-translation programs available for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Mark @ May 20th 2008 11:17AM
I was gonna say the same thing. I can see this thing selling if it supports 英語/日本語 and 日本語/英語 translation. Not so much if its Hangul only.
CosterMonger @ May 20th 2008 11:15AM
I always like how iRiver can do such unique and genuine design in their products they always make em' sexy and sweet, I don't really like this one as much since it's not in black.
CosterMonger @ May 20th 2008 11:30AM

oh it does come in a grey-ish theme
Geonerd @ May 20th 2008 11:19AM
Simply beautiful. Still 33G seams small for me but acceptable. But the fact that it doesn't have A2DP Bluetooth .... UNACCEPTABLE
Coleman Foley @ May 20th 2008 12:04PM
another thing its missing is wifi and 3G and a browser. then this would be a really great device
MBS @ May 20th 2008 1:34PM
Ahh yes, let's make the ~$300-$400 PMP into the ~1500 MID
