$5,000 Dior phone: so upscale it doesn't require specs

[Via Textually]

The estimated percentage of cellphones that were recycled in 2007.
The EPA estimated that of the 126.3 million cellphones disposed of in 2007, only 14 million -- about 10 percent -- were recycled. The rest? Landfill heaven. (source: EPA, July 2008)

Paris: That's hot
Madrid: That's tacky.
I said it once and I'll say it again :Hell No!
Who needs specs. Women products are meant to be under specked, overly priced.
I second that
You have no idea the women i meet with phones exceeding $800 that have enough power to run a small town, just to tell me that bought it because it look nice. and then how do i turn on the blue tooth.
Um, no...Only "femiots" would plunk down that kind of money for labels; especially for diamond encrusted tech and tripe like this.
This lady is more tech savvy ;)
It's all about carrying the name - and nothing else. Beside if it make a phone call what else do you need it to do?
I need it to not cost me 5 G's if I'm just going to use it to "make a phone call"
Yep, as I said it's about the name on the phone, not the phone's functions. If you just want to make a phone call and not carry a Dior, go buy a pay as you go cheapo phone - sheeesh !!!
@Ace: What if, relative to your total net worth, $5K is about as much as 10 ct? If you then had to choose between a phone that costs 1ct and one that costs 10 ct, would price be a factor? Didn't think so.
Not that I would be caught dead with one of these even if I had a trillion $ in the bank.
Suddenly, the iPhone looks incredibly good in value-for-money comparisions. Especially when you factor in the cost of an (obligatory) contract.
I always purchase items that are advertised as "price on request".
What the hell's a "Dior?" And do you say it like you're saying the word "door" but dee-or? The fu...?
Dior = Upmarket clothing, perfume etc. And you got it right, it's pronounced dee-or.
Haha how "cute."
It's a bargain!!! How many people jumped on the Vertu bandwagon at >15k$ which in fact was mnf'd by Nokia? And then always casting an eye on someone's new toys and self-convincing that it was still worthwhile...
Designwise it seems about only ok. The mini phone extender is not so novel but a good Btooth earpiece can be convenient... although then you wouldn't be showing off your phone
The outer design isn't totally unlike a HTC diamond.
The inner design almost certainly is
looks like a leather skin wallet...
Ultra luxury + electronics don't mix. The bling is expensive and the guts will soon be obsolete. Imagine a sterling silver diamond packing Tiffany's Gameboy...
That might sound ridiculous now but it's not so different from this

in 10 years.
brands create value by making an ordinary product expensive, thus creating the illusion of quality and artificially restricting supply. the higher the price, the rarer it is, and the more desirable it is to the target audience.
why should the same not work for phones? actually, nokia has already proven it works for phones with its vertu line.
these types of products are meant for mostly Russian/Chinese who went from farmers to tycoons so fast they forgot to develop their own sense of style. With this product, all they have to do is to have the money to spend.
While I'm not really sure about the Russians, I've seen so many wealthy Chinese wearing Prada shirt with mis-matching Gucci pants and carrying LV bags. They got all the luxury brand names wrapped around them but those things aren't going to cover up their lack of manners and class.
Well at least they have the money for it and won't cause troubles like council kids wearing nike hoody and go stab people for quick cash.
@Jeff: Don't forget the Arabs too...
@NG: You make a very important point. I bet we'll be seeing fake Burberry phones in Essex very soon.
Looks like a Katana with some diamonds on it.
Oh my Dior! The Dior phone features the "CANNAGE" pattern on the back (its not like the HTC, this is an original Dior pattern)
This patern is so IN (HTC Diamond, SE Xperia, Nokia Prism)
I'm sure the will create a limited version like DG did with the black and gold Moto V3i and then a mass product like the Moto V3i which was silver and gold
Wow, that's so ugly I wouldn't get it even if it was free with a free all unlimited data plan.
Although people are free to spend their money as they please, I still have zero respect for people who buy designer crap.
LV, Gucci, Prada bags and all that stuff. Utter junk.
I can almost start to understand if it's something you can actually sorta use like a pair of shoes, where workmanship *might* matter (assuming it's not mass-produced junk like the stuff at 1/10th the price).
This goes double for those bug-eyed fugly sunglasses where the designer's label is bigger than the actual lenses (which are, in turn, larger than the wearer's entire head).
Sorry honey, not impressed. Even if you have a good job, I'm not doing anything to mix my finances up with those of someone so slavish to trends. NEXT!
funny coming from a guy with a bmw and apple logo as an avatar...
no you don't seem brand obsessed at all ;)
Funny, I was thinking the same thing!
But don't worry, Reid will come back with some argument that Apples and BMWs outperform their rivals and it's not really a brand obsession at all...
Wait, do you really think that it never occurred to me that some people might make that comment? I don't really care if people don't share my interest in performance cars and well-thought-out operating systems. I don't care that my Macs are desktops so I can't pimp them at the local trendy coffee shop, nor do I care if some Apple fanboi gives me crap because I have a Dell monitor instead of an overpriced, under-featured Apple one.
If you're of the opinion that $1000 "designer" purses have inherent value other than the label, that's your problem, not mine. Anybody who buys a product for the brand name deserves equal scorn. The difference is, some companies make good products and some don't.
I consider the Apple logo fair warning. If a Windows fanboy wants to discount my opinion on some Apple matter just because I tend to like Apple products, then it allows them to do so. Though I am more interested in letting people know I'm an Apple fan so that, when I criticize something stupid the company does, people understand it's not just a knee-jerk reaction from a Redmond apologist.
so hows the idrive workin' ya
I'd have to be the kind of guy who'd buy a brand-new (or close to new) car to know. Fortunately my cars have been too old, or had too few seats to be so blighted. Most modern car I've ever owned is a 2000 model, and my current ride has fewer electronics than my now-13-year-old M3 did.
On your topic, though, when I have driven cars with iDrive, I find it works okay. Certainly the too-many-buttons problem needed to be solved, though I think a touchscreen (like the Japanese makes tend to use) work better. For that matter, most Japanese electronics are better than what the Germans or Americans put into their cars. I'll probably get low-ranked for this, but BMW should not have used Microsoft in this (or any) application. Though a quick Wiki search reports that since 2004 iDrive has run on the VxWorks RTOS instead of WinCE -- news to me, since the UI is still fairly unintuitive.
But then, I'm old school and prefer to keep my stereo and HVAC controls separate, rather than integrated into one huge system.
And people say the iPhone is overpriced... Yeesh, and talk about fugly!
I agree who in their right fuckin mind is going to pay 5k for this phone?! It better be able to do more than just make calls, expensive piece of crap.
All your doing is paying for the name, thats it.
you know, even if i had the money to buy this, i wouldn't because i don't need to be that woman i see describe in the comments above me.
i'm way too smart for that. i play wow, for goodness sake!
Smart chicks are hot.
Playing WoW =! smart.
I would know. I've got friends who are dumb as bricks but are still addicted to the game.
hahaha, i play wow, too! LOL
Because playing WoW makes you smart.
oic
this makes the iphone look like a sensible (and frugal) purchase
I hate these so-called fashion phones. Five grand for a hunk a bullsh!t? Suck my balls.
the people commenting on this phone are just the people who could never dream of affording anything like this.
when you have money, and lots of it, 5k for a phone that you bring with you everywhere, is not at all ridiculous.
plus, the one priced at 5k is with real, non-sears quality (like many of you probably shop), diamonds.
not to mention, the phone looks fire.
....Or maybe some of us are just sensible and know what better to do with all that money?
