3G iPhone to support 42Mbps Evolved HSPA data?
Get this. Australian site ChannelNews claims that a "senior executive of Telstra" is the latest 3G iPhone bean spiller. They quote the exec as saying the following:"We know what is coming we have seen the new device and it will be available on our network as soon as it is launched in the USA. By Christmas this phone will be capable of 42Mbps which will make it faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world."
Interesting. We know that Telstra's Next G HSDPA network has been capable of 14.4Mbps since 2007. At GSMA Mobile World Congress, they even committed to 21Mbps before the end of the year and 42Mbps using HSPA+ (aka, Evolved HSPA, HSPA Evolution) technology in 2009... not Christmas of 2008. Hard to say if this is just industry blow-harding or actual insider info. June 9th: T-minus 17 days and counting.

Ok so the main processing chip in this iPhone is managing 42Mbps Evolved HSPA data instead of streaming it cause of memory built-ins making the missed data less occuring so its really a depricated version of the best operating system platform and a trashy compliance to the consumer market which in 50 years will see that sure was a waste of time because thermodynamic processing chips will ultimately bring down the operating temperature range and lower voltage for its operation and eventually supporting its own recharge system via wind and solar and I just do not see adding on this advantage when your paying so much for a phone it should be there out of the box for you without having to access the Internet or go to a Apple store, AT&T, or a Service Provider for the add-on if they ever consider adding it on to the iPhone.
"Please Billy please.. no gibberish tonight.. please.. I beg you."
To have good quality audio and video at least 8MBps rate for the carrier to provide like in a digital TV channel not analog 6MBps; but here you got Internet which must be at least 1.5MBps and data must be at least 6MBps to be good and thats 20.5 one way and twice that leaves you with a mere 1MBps which must be for the iPhone Service Provider to access its time component and fees and user access and other criteria the phone needs for its service connection and roaming capability and thats the full 42MBps but get this it just does not happen all at the same time and its stagged on a bandwidth which could be a mere 10MB not a heafty 42MB of course it could be less bandwidth on the low end around 2MB in increments of five total bandwidths in use or less. I am not a developer but it seems logical that its a new product and has appeal. It is something to research entirely to see the flow of everything in a drawing.
Apple's iPhone firmware 1.1.2 hacked already and thats the newest release. Unlocked versions are for non subscribers of a term calling plan like Pay-as-you-Go is unlocked versions being sold.
Please shut up.
Thank you.
2 sentences instead of one! It's an improvement! Keep working on it!
1.1.2 is the latest firmware? Well I'm a super elite hacker then cause i've got 1.1.4. how you like me now Beotch!
please drop cocaïne michael now
wtf. um B does not equal bit. You are saying byte, when everyone else is saying bit.
Seriously way to fanboy the Iphone into everything...
"We know what is coming we have seen the new device ...faster than a lot of broadband offerings and the fastest iPhone on any network in the world."
It says nothing that its an iphone. in fact it can be read expressly to says its not an Iphone "faster than...the fastest iPhone on any network in the world."
That can be a bb bold, it can be any phone that with launch in the next 7 month, which is years in tech time. Seriously get off the Iphone steve jobs cool aid train. The iphone is not the end all be all. There were touch screens before there will be touch screens after, there were phones crappier than the Iphone before there will be crappier phones after, there were better phones before there will be better phones after. Every time some mention new fast phone they may not be talking about a new iphone especially when they expressly say... "faster than...the fastest iPhone on any network in the world."suggesting its a better product than the iphone
These speeds are definitely on par with Telstra's pathway for it's NextG Network (albeit a little early). To my understanding, they are able to upgrade their current network speeds up to the 42Mbps point before having to perform any hardware upgrades on their towers. The more questionable thing isn't the speed but the timeframe.... and the data costs that are going to be heaped with it. I vote for hiptop/sidekick plan on the iPhone!
This is just irresponsible reporting of a story on so many levels. Cmon engadget, you arent that dumb.
Q U I C K ! ! !
All you idiots lined up in NY, get on a plane and go line up in Sydney!
42 Mb/s people! Did you hear that?!
Telstra's network is def capable of these speeds, it currently has throttling on it at the moment, my brother who lives in Sydney currently gets between 13 and 13.8Mbps, from what I have read it is the most advances mobile network in the world. By the way I haven't just read that from their own site just google it, many places including Japan have nothing but praise for it, including it's massive coverage areas and scope of coverage from each single tower is amazing, it is pretty heavy on the pocket $ wise though.
you have to actually read the words in the qoute - CAPABLE of 42mbps - what that means is that it is compatible with the speed of a network that has a theoretical top end of 41Mbps. uh - yea. Additionally, PEAK and TYPICAL area always two different things. I really find it helarious that ATT is tweaking about getting their network to 3G three full years after SPRINT and Verizons CDMA. It's like that one guy at the party who thinks he's the first to have the newest suit at a party, and realizes that everyone already has that... welcome to the big boys table, AT&T. What took you so long, and why is your "3G" network so small?
the Infineon S-GOLD3 chip (baseband) is only capable of 7.2mbps so thats the max of the iPhone so 42 is completely useless.
"iPhone's alleged baseband chip—the Infineon's S-GOLD3, which tops at 7.2Mbps"

Engadget: 3G iPhone to support 42Mbps Evolved HSPA data?
Me: I don't know Engadget, if I knew i would answer you.
HSPA+ will require a 4 array antenna. Which wont be available in cell phones for now.
If it really will be able to run at speeds like that will they actually put a modem in the thing this time ?
I will have to agree with PACKETSNIFER up there, The iPhone or any other mobile phone have the prossessing power for anything close to that bandwith. Maybe, perhaps, the looooooooooooooong waited iTablet?
As i understand it, Telstra uses the 850MHz band for their Next G network, (as opposed to 2100MHz) which hardly anyone else in the world uses. It would be nice if Apple made a special iPhone just for us, but given how long it took Australia to get the iTunes store and iPhoto printing, i have my doubts...
This is so sad. We barely get 6MBs cable internet in the U.S and a paltry 3 mbs "3G". Meanwhile the only 2 GSM carriers finnally got their shit together recently and released their now primitive 3G capabilities and sprint can't seem to keep their shit together for the release of WiMax. Ohh where are the google gods when you need them?
bullshit. they can't even give me a decent 1.5mb wired adsl connection. I don't believe they can get 42mb wireless connection by the end of the year. It doesn't really matter anyway because their plans are like "15mb wireless across 98% of Australia" and then in the fine print it says 100mb of downloads each month and then it's like a million dollars if you go over the limit.
Isn't one of the "Senior executives of Telstra" none other than that douche bag Sol Trujillo that destroyed the old U.S.West and then left the country?
When it's unlocked, I'm in...
To my ears this sounds like the 3G iPhone will contain one of those programmable 3G chips that can be upgraded via firmware to run any 3G protocol and/or frequency you can imagine. And that would be way cool.
Consider that when they say 42Mbps they mean that's the theoretical maximum. I am pretty sure in real life you won't get more than 6 - 10Mbps out of it, at the most.
6 to 10 Mbits, sorry you missed the boat, users in Australia have been getting more than that on the next G network for a while now, try 13 to 14 Mbits, not just theoretical, that's from 1st hand knowledge, I will admit Telstra are pretty heavy on the pricing which kills, but they are the leaders in Australia for speeds (ie 30Mbit on cable, currently testing 100Mbit on Docsis 3.0)
AT&T stores are banning vacations from mid June to mid July. They did the same thing June 29 last year...
