Apple updates Leopard to 10.5.3
For the legions of Mac users out there annoyed with Leopard niggles, some possible relief is now available, as Apple has made version 10.5.3 available to users via software update. The new version has a slew of minor adjustments, including fixes for AirPort and networking reliability issues, Time Machine and Time Capsule updates (including improved compatibility with Aperture), and improved Spaces usability. Anyone out there taken the plunge yet? Let us know how it's going.

Any info about Psystar's Open Computer running this?
Magic 8-Ball says : Not likely.
Psystar will probably include this update with their products eventually, but it'll take a few months, since Psystar seems to steal all their software work from the Hackintosh scene.
Well the thing is, with Hackintoshs it's very risky to update. I've heard cases in which people updated but had to do reinstalls or patch another disk. So I highly doubt Psystar white boxes will be capable of running 10.5.3 unless they are OTB units.
SP1 for OSX 10
SP 5.3
SP1? OS X 10?
Here's how the naming thing goes, since you obviously don't get it.
OS X = the 10 in 10.5.3
5 = Fifth version
3 = third update
So, a correct comment would go something like
SP 3 for OS X 5
Or, you know... Just... OS X 10.5.3
Saying OS X 10 is a bit redundant. You may as well say OS 10 10.
See the X is a Roman Numeral. The X equals 10.
So writing OS 10.5.3 would be written OS X.V.III
But, thats enough of being an asshole for now.
So in other words .6 to go till you owe Steve more money.
Or for those in the know, 'the three'
You mean the equivalent of Windows 8 as 10.5.2 was clearly as rich as Windows 7 will be.
@kal326
You never know with Apple. Versions have gone +/- 10.x.9 a few times i.e. 10.1.5, 10.2.8, and 10.4.11. The only time it jumped right at 9 was 10.3.9.
So, you carry the 3 and divide that by the 5 and add the 10??!
No, its metric, so you double it and add thirty.
But never on Thursday!!!
Ohmygod! cats! CATS!! AAAHHH AND IT'S 23 OF THEM!!! AAAHHH...
ooo will get this tonight
Its a 420 MB download.
And I'm using a shitty 900 down/ 1500 up speed line in my building. At home, my FIOS woulda' downloaded it in 5 minutes flat.
You can go to a store to get a CD if you really have Internet problems...
you call that slow! I live in poland, and i have slow internet. max download speed 126kb per second. i almost never get that. you have 900kbps that is sooooo fast.
ok so my first comment didnt have a whole lot to do with the post or anything, but DAMN a low ranked for that? wow people love to hate apple... sad people sad
Actually it took me approximately 3 minutes to download the update over wifi. I have 15 down 2 up FiOS.
I always hate airport updates. Something never works like it used to afterwards.
My problem with airport updates is I always end up with tons of DC issues. This is by the way, the first update I will do wafter switching from my linksys to the airport extreme base station. Being in the middle of a raid and wondering why everyone is standing around forever only to realize you have been disconnected and then come back dead sucks
I guess it just doesn't work.
my air port always just shuts off and then i need to cut power to the modem router and turn off the air port. reset them al them it sometimes works again. I hope that gets fixed
Downloading as we speak...
Noone cares as you type.
Who is "Noone"? You mean Peter Noone?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Noone
Or perhaps you meant to say "No one"?
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/no_one
Your "A" in Smartass 101 came at the expense of English 101.
Got a little too much time on your hands eh?
Yay, free honey for everyone! Yay Mayor Bee, Mayor bee!
I don't see what you did there.
you know what they say, meth is a hell of a drug!
I love it when people reference Family Guy randomly. Especially really funny moments that I don't actively recite.

Womp...I updated the moment it gave me an option before scoping it out online...
Guess I'll see what happens, haven't been burned by one of these updates...yet.
Wonder if they fixed the choppy Grids view on 40 plus apps
wonder if it still takes 10-15 minutes to verify / repair permissions...
@Darkroom: You need a faster drive, never takes more than 2 mins for me, and thats on a laptop with 150GB of 250 used.
Here's my wish list: Fix the damn memory leaks. Safari is just now using over 300M of real memory. But I have seen it at 1GB (real!), Mail.app at 700MB, SystemUIServer at 300MB, and just now I see kernel_task at an unhealthy-looking 250MB.
OS X is super stable (*) but tons of apps and even system tasks seem to have memory leaks.
(*) At least after I used FontBook to validate all my fonts and kick all those out that had errors. No freezes since then.
@nikster
OSX apps will use all available RAM. As more apps request RAM you'll see Safari use less than a GB. Why have empty RAM that you aren't using when an App can use the most it can? If you watched a couple of Large movie trailers online that would certainly eat up more than a GB if you have the space.
@7on: People certainly seem more than willing to line up and flame Vista for doing the same thing - it's only fair to direct the same vitriol at OS X.
@Zeke
That doesn't mean we can't say things in OS X's defence where it's rightly due.
OS X uses all available RAM ( though i think it leaves a negligible sum free)
"it's only fair to direct the same vitriol at OS X"
it's funny how whiny douchebag trolls always have some labored excuse for their sociopathy
phanbouy: funny you call people a troll when you've insulted somebody in every post i've seen in this thread.
as stated, Vista and OS X are both actively using much more of your ram than XP. Vista does it a bit differently, it caches startup files for programs so they are faster to load up. OS X gives most of the memory away to already running programs to make them run better while they are open. this includes programs that are closed but not quit, hence why they load up lightning quick.
ozid ozbourne,
wasnt gonna reply but then i remembered you were the guy who said "while i take a deuce" which automatically makes me laugh out loud.
point about ram management well put anyway; just leave the deuces out next time, k? thanks a bunch, milton
@ 7on
Yeah, I remember being shot down by an Apple rep when OSX first came out... I asked "why is the app using 100% of the processor and so much memory" his reply was... "why not?"
Why have CPU and RAM sitting dormant when you can be using it to make an App run faster? - Unless its a laptop and your trying to save power... but I think OSX (and other OS's) take that into account...
no noticable improvements, then again, i use a macbook air which is darn slow already.
Then why did you buy one?
cause it looked cool and i had 2500 to burn. but now i regret it. i didnt know that the ssd version would be this slow as well.
Typical Mac user.
@deed:
Typical arrogant comment.
Doesn't look like that stack of icons got straightened yet. How hard is that to do? WTH?
it's not . . just right click your apps folder and a vertical display will show
Wouldn't work for me....said "could not install update; please contact manufacturer for assistance"
You must be running Vista. :-)
Downloading as I type! :-)
Why was this low ranked?
Because the Apple haters just go through and vote down anyone who even indicates they own, use, or are familiar with Macs.
They're children.
I would argue the comment is worthless. Tell me if it works or if it has problems.
Going to head off to the bathroom now.
Wonder if the photoshop CS3 bugs will go away with this one.
Does anyone know if this STOPS me using my external HD connected to Airport Extreme Base Station and using that for Time Machine?
Remember, Apple never has said they support "external hard drives" with Time Machine.
It better NOT stop me from using that... I will NOT buy a Time Capsule.
Well the whole point of Time Machine is to use an external hard drive. Time Capsule hasn't always been an option.
However using it over wifi, I am unsure about that. All I can tell you mine works fine connected directly via USB.
Jeff; I uploaded it this morning and I can no longer see the drive connected to my Airport Extreme. At one point, I could. I think the answer to your question is yes; they are no longer visible.
As you probably know, Apple didn't support that capability but it somehow snuck through the initial release of Time Machine. I agree that this limits Time Machine's usefulness considerably, but it may be the least of its problems. I still swear by SuperDuper for my real backups, although I use Time Machine occasionally to find old email, etc.
I can still see and select my external drive (connected to an airport) from the Time Machine control panel
First thing I noticed: the spotlight icon is pulsing... kind of annoying.
Doesnt that mean its "indexing" ?
It's probably indexing your drives again or updating the indexing. No worries, that is perfectly normal, until it starts pulsing red and giving off an eldritch glow. That's bad. If said hell-spawned illumination is accompanied by the fell chanting of black hymns to the great old ones, well, I hope you got AppleCare, buddy.
The middle of the magnifying glass pulsates if it is indexing a drive.
Will definitely have to apply it to my work dual G5. I'm not impressed with Leopard, it's not so stable. I'm keeping Tiger on my Mac Pro at home.
198MB big. Ran fine, both download and running the actual updating.
MacBook Pro
I have a MBP too, but why the hell is my download 420 MB?
:(
@ waiownsyou its probably because yours is a combined update. Did you get the last one?
No, mine is 420MB too and I always have the latest version. Makes me wonder what majortom is NOT getting...
sticking with 10.4.11
Sticking with 10.1.1
:-P
10.4.11? Are you silly?
That's barely been tested!
Sticking with Public Beta.
Sticking with Windows...
"Fixes a possible alert message that incorrectly states a backup volume does not have enough space. "
--good, so it wasn't just me! I was manually deleting old backups and wondering what the point of it all was.
...however, I'll wait for the "Breaks" list before downloading...
well then, nope, does NOT fix photoshop type tool and spaces hate fest.
That's nice. The best OS just got better.
Unfortunately, I'm also using 10.4.11 because I'm too lazy to upgrade.
How can you state that Leopard is the best OS when you are still using Tiger...
It appears that the focus problem when cmd-tabbing to firefox in spaces has been fixed... man that was pissing me off!
that's great to hear, that was pissing me off as well.
I started downloading this about 2 minutes ago. I'm finished now. Thanks Fios.
Now I am restarting.
BRAG MOAR PLZ
it's 420M for me as well and you dowloaded it in 2 minutes?!
1.875 MBps = 112 MBpm.
I wasn't exactly right but it was done by the time I finished taking a deuce.
i think your repliers have finished talking to a douche
better have your credit card ready....
they will charge 20 bucks for a minor update that unlocks a trial of the OS you will get after updating
=P
Don't know about you guys but I have a 2006 MacPro with the nVidia 8800 graphics card. Performance under iPhoto before 10.5.3 was visibly slower than it was while using the ATI 1900XT graphics card. After 10.5.3, performance in iPhoto seems a lot better. It used to stop every so often to fill up the screen with pictures as I scrolled through all of my pictures, now it just scrolls without having to stop. I hope this was one of the fixes. Oh, and my 10.5.3 file was about 198mb also.
Updated with no problems. All is well.
Macbook Pro 2.5, 4Gigs @ 667 MHz 512 8600.
420MB for me on my iMac...
ditto for me, but on my mac mini.
So... is it time to upgrade to Leopard yet?
Could be. The thing that's been driving me nuts since I upgraded is Spaces but this seems to be quite well behaved now. If your Mac will handle Leopard (and pretty much anything within the last 5-years will) then I think now is the time to migrate over, if you want to. Of course, I've only been using the new version for a few hours so far this morning so maybe there are issues waiting for me later.
You would think that Leopard would run ok on a dual G5, but we upgraded 4 or 5 1.6Ghz machines and they run noticebly slower.
There was never a dual 1.6ghz option in the Powermac if I recall correctly
We upgraded my wife's iBook G4 and it was a lot slower. In an effort to relieve the slowness, I maxed out the ram (1.128 gig and installed a 7200 rpm drive (battery doesn't last quite as long but it's still ok) that seems to have brought it to the place where it was before the upgrade.
