Apple updates Leopard to 10.5.3
For the legions of Mac users out there annoyed with Leopard niggles, some possible relief is now available, as Apple has made version 10.5.3 available to users via software update. The new version has a slew of minor adjustments, including fixes for AirPort and networking reliability issues, Time Machine and Time Capsule updates (including improved compatibility with Aperture), and improved Spaces usability. Anyone out there taken the plunge yet? Let us know how it's going.

Any info about Psystar's Open Computer running this?
Blackstar @ May 28th 2008 1:20PM
Magic 8-Ball says : Not likely.
IT-Accountant @ May 28th 2008 1:28PM
Psystar will probably include this update with their products eventually, but it'll take a few months, since Psystar seems to steal all their software work from the Hackintosh scene.
ChrisG @ May 28th 2008 3:29PM
Well the thing is, with Hackintoshs it's very risky to update. I've heard cases in which people updated but had to do reinstalls or patch another disk. So I highly doubt Psystar white boxes will be capable of running 10.5.3 unless they are OTB units.

SP1 for OSX 10
papu @ May 28th 2008 1:18PM
SP 5.3
sM @ May 28th 2008 1:28PM
SP1? OS X 10?
Here's how the naming thing goes, since you obviously don't get it.
OS X = the 10 in 10.5.3
5 = Fifth version
3 = third update
So, a correct comment would go something like
SP 3 for OS X 5
xtremesniper @ May 28th 2008 1:33PM
Or, you know... Just... OS X 10.5.3
ErrorBorn @ Jun 28th 2008 11:48AM
Saying OS X 10 is a bit redundant. You may as well say OS 10 10.
See the X is a Roman Numeral. The X equals 10.
So writing OS 10.5.3 would be written OS X.V.III
But, thats enough of being an asshole for now.
kal326 @ May 28th 2008 2:15PM
So in other words .6 to go till you owe Steve more money.
THJ @ May 28th 2008 2:19PM
Or for those in the know, 'the three'
iPriest @ May 28th 2008 2:28PM
You mean the equivalent of Windows 8 as 10.5.2 was clearly as rich as Windows 7 will be.
zephead @ May 28th 2008 3:04PM
@kal326
You never know with Apple. Versions have gone +/- 10.x.9 a few times i.e. 10.1.5, 10.2.8, and 10.4.11. The only time it jumped right at 9 was 10.3.9.
Nando @ May 28th 2008 3:15PM
So, you carry the 3 and divide that by the 5 and add the 10??!
johnzilla @ May 28th 2008 3:23PM
No, its metric, so you double it and add thirty.
ZeroCorpse @ May 28th 2008 5:49PM

Flashpoint @ May 28th 2008 2:31PM
Its a 420 MB download.
And I'm using a shitty 900 down/ 1500 up speed line in my building. At home, my FIOS woulda' downloaded it in 5 minutes flat.
hans @ May 28th 2008 3:11PM
You can go to a store to get a CD if you really have Internet problems...
Bart Rijksen @ May 29th 2008 1:09AM
you call that slow! I live in poland, and i have slow internet. max download speed 126kb per second. i almost never get that. you have 900kbps that is sooooo fast.
Ian @ May 29th 2008 1:14AM
ok so my first comment didnt have a whole lot to do with the post or anything, but DAMN a low ranked for that? wow people love to hate apple... sad people sad
thetinguy @ May 29th 2008 11:10AM
Actually it took me approximately 3 minutes to download the update over wifi. I have 15 down 2 up FiOS.
PINE @ May 28th 2008 1:19PM
I always hate airport updates. Something never works like it used to afterwards.
PINE @ May 28th 2008 2:05PM
My problem with airport updates is I always end up with tons of DC issues. This is by the way, the first update I will do wafter switching from my linksys to the airport extreme base station. Being in the middle of a raid and wondering why everyone is standing around forever only to realize you have been disconnected and then come back dead sucks
Superevil @ May 28th 2008 2:12PM
I guess it just doesn't work.
Tyson @ May 28th 2008 7:15PM
my air port always just shuts off and then i need to cut power to the modem router and turn off the air port. reset them al them it sometimes works again. I hope that gets fixed
JohnnieTech @ May 28th 2008 1:25PM
Downloading as we speak...
Monu @ May 28th 2008 3:05PM
Noone cares as you type.
Antman @ May 28th 2008 5:13PM
Who is "Noone"? You mean Peter Noone?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Noone
Or perhaps you meant to say "No one"?
http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/no_one
Your "A" in Smartass 101 came at the expense of English 101.
thetinguy @ May 29th 2008 11:12AM
Got a little too much time on your hands eh?

Womp...I updated the moment it gave me an option before scoping it out online...
Guess I'll see what happens, haven't been burned by one of these updates...yet.
Hotrod @ May 28th 2008 1:30PM
Wonder if they fixed the choppy Grids view on 40 plus apps
Darkroom @ May 28th 2008 1:49PM
wonder if it still takes 10-15 minutes to verify / repair permissions...
nikster @ May 28th 2008 3:29PM
@Darkroom: You need a faster drive, never takes more than 2 mins for me, and thats on a laptop with 150GB of 250 used.
Here's my wish list: Fix the damn memory leaks. Safari is just now using over 300M of real memory. But I have seen it at 1GB (real!), Mail.app at 700MB, SystemUIServer at 300MB, and just now I see kernel_task at an unhealthy-looking 250MB.
OS X is super stable (*) but tons of apps and even system tasks seem to have memory leaks.
(*) At least after I used FontBook to validate all my fonts and kick all those out that had errors. No freezes since then.
7on @ May 28th 2008 4:08PM
@nikster
OSX apps will use all available RAM. As more apps request RAM you'll see Safari use less than a GB. Why have empty RAM that you aren't using when an App can use the most it can? If you watched a couple of Large movie trailers online that would certainly eat up more than a GB if you have the space.
ZekeSulastin @ May 28th 2008 4:11PM
@7on: People certainly seem more than willing to line up and flame Vista for doing the same thing - it's only fair to direct the same vitriol at OS X.
luzzio @ May 28th 2008 5:25PM
@Zeke
That doesn't mean we can't say things in OS X's defence where it's rightly due.
OS X uses all available RAM ( though i think it leaves a negligible sum free)
phanbouy @ May 28th 2008 5:45PM
"it's only fair to direct the same vitriol at OS X"
it's funny how whiny douchebag trolls always have some labored excuse for their sociopathy
OziD @ May 29th 2008 12:07AM
phanbouy: funny you call people a troll when you've insulted somebody in every post i've seen in this thread.
as stated, Vista and OS X are both actively using much more of your ram than XP. Vista does it a bit differently, it caches startup files for programs so they are faster to load up. OS X gives most of the memory away to already running programs to make them run better while they are open. this includes programs that are closed but not quit, hence why they load up lightning quick.
phanbouy @ May 29th 2008 1:13AM
ozid ozbourne,
wasnt gonna reply but then i remembered you were the guy who said "while i take a deuce" which automatically makes me laugh out loud.
point about ram management well put anyway; just leave the deuces out next time, k? thanks a bunch, milton
Tristan @ May 29th 2008 1:51AM
@ 7on
Yeah, I remember being shot down by an Apple rep when OSX first came out... I asked "why is the app using 100% of the processor and so much memory" his reply was... "why not?"
Why have CPU and RAM sitting dormant when you can be using it to make an App run faster? - Unless its a laptop and your trying to save power... but I think OSX (and other OS's) take that into account...
asher madan @ May 28th 2008 1:36PM
no noticable improvements, then again, i use a macbook air which is darn slow already.
Eric Kelly @ May 28th 2008 3:09PM
Then why did you buy one?
asher madan @ May 28th 2008 3:38PM
cause it looked cool and i had 2500 to burn. but now i regret it. i didnt know that the ssd version would be this slow as well.
