If you've been keeping up on the launch of Intel's dual-core
Atom 330 processor, we have a couple little extra nubbins for you to chew on this evening. We already know that the Atom 330 will clock in at 1.6GHz, but that 1MB of cache will be split amongst the two processors. Additionally, we're looking at a 533MHz FSB, 64-bit processing (no real surprise there), and a peak TDP of only 8W, which should be just perfect for those
mini PC's that rely on
passive cooling. Look for a release in Q3 of 2008, most likely packed inside those
Wind PCs.
1 MB of cache? If I knew what that meant, I'd be either disappointed or excited.
Actually, I know what it means, and I'm neutral. ;)
Wow its got 2 cores? Thats pretty good for a 1.6ghz processor that only uses 8w. Any chance of overclocking?
i heard these small things cant be overclocked ;o
Alright everyone, ready for VIA to die off?
OK... that is it..
You wait Steve Jobs will have an exclusive, right... with Intel...right... and Intel won't let anyone else have these chips coz, like.... Intel really likes Apple.
And Steve is gonna like, make the best ever, really small laptop, and its gonna be really cool, right. Aluminum chassis right, real smart like.
This is the end of Dell and Asus. Maybe the world.
It will be interesting to see how well Atom 330 performs compared to a Core2 Solo U2100, despite the difference in number of cores. And does anyone have an idea of how much the Atom processors will cost?
Sorry, I went off on one just then.
I am really quite pleased with this announcement. I would really like to slap one of these in a ultra small form factor case, shove it under the cabinets in my kitchen, bathroom etc and have an always on PC, available, but not eating power.
Roll on Q3. Well done Intel.
This is going to make a lot of difference, or should do, to those looking to make the leap to a sub-notebook, especially if they have purchasing cycle of more than 2 years.
I think it would also be interesting to have a look back at Dell's road map, the sub notebooks seemed to be just below the horizon if I remember rightly, with the horizon falling around September/October.
I would pay a little extra for the security of having a Dell and the service that goes with that...Oh... and of course Windows. (I do like my Vista, I would like it if it would be comfortable in this platform and chip.
Who knows, we might even start to see some even bigger price drops all around on the sub-notebooks, as the competition goes up, together with volumes and the resultant economies of scale.
We are getting to a point of "real" choice in this arena.
I think though also, we should expect to see some differences open up in the "quality" aspects. I think that as our demand for newer and newer technology in our bags, goes up, our need therefore for longevity, will go down. (I want my laptop to last no more than 2 years -so I can get with the latest chip, more processing power, less energy, lighter, etc). I think that in many countries this is the case with Mobile phones.
Anyway. I think that is a little calmer.
plz just stfu
Let the man speak, even if he is a rambling lunatic or some famous actor. If you have something constructive to say, disagree with his statement or whatever, then say what you want. If not, shut the fuck up.
The man is speaking, so make no exception to me. If you fail to see that my post is "constructive" then you have an opinion, which means I am entitled have an opinion, which means you contradict yourself. So please, shut the fuck up.
8 Watts for an embedded CPU is still pretty hefty. The entire Asus 7inch eeePC (not sure about the 9 inch) uses a mere 11 watts of power (display, wifi, chipsets, etc..). Also, the single core model of the Atom uses only 2 watts of power, unless I'm mistaken. How does adding 1 more core result in 3-4x more power consumption? Shouldn't these numbers be much more linear?
Atom may be an embedded CPU in future but for it isn't now for sure.
8W of TDP might be an effect of a higher voltage due to some technical aspects (MCM packaging? shared FSB? improving yields?).
Oh Jew123.
That is not very nice at all. I know that this is your first post. Welcome. It would have been nice if your first post had been a contribution.
Anyway, it is your purogative to swear and abuse. But I hope that your parents and teachers don't catch you. You are very naughty.
Of course, you might be a fan boy. That could explain things too. Most likely a combination of the two.
Anyhow, I look forward to reading your opnions on technological developments.

Way to take the high road big guy!
Hmm so... If I bought an Eee 901, could I slip this in sometime during the future, or are the atoms soldered onto the Eees mobo?
yawn.
Archos needs to put these in their next line of PMPs so they can finally support 1080p x264 MKV playback or something.
