I think the main selling point used to be the game console itself (games and only games), now it's a little murky as to what the selling point of the current generation of consoles are (gaming, online, casual market, multimedia/blu-ray). Nintendo decided to take the casual route which is working great so far and MS/Sony decided to take a broader multimedia route with gaming as a vital component of this approach.
