ASUS R710 nav unit features HUD projections
ASUS is launching (and re-launching) a bunch of new gear at Computex, and somewhat lost in the shuffle is the R710 GPS, which looks otherwise ordinary but apparently features a built-in projector that allows it to present information on the windshield HUD-style. That's literally all we know -- the unit only scored one short paragraph in ASUS's Computex PR package -- but we're planning on sending our crew out to dig up some more details on this bad boy when the show opens tomorrow.

I bet when you buy this your car insurance triples.

Not good, the images must be presented on the windscreen will cause the eye to focus close range, then your eyes must refocus at distant images, not safe while driving.
3G iPhone 7 days and counting... touch to believe...

dude OMFG every single article you post a thing about how the iphone is coming out STFU we know.

KEROLiUKAS @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:11PM

Further proof you blather on about things you know nothing about. I have had no such problem on my BMW 5er. But you would rather complain about something you have no experience with, just to promote your precious little iCrap.
And you think your 3G iPhone with GPS will be safer? One hand holding your iPhone, looking up directions, while holding a picure of Steve Jobs in the other, swooning over him, steering with your knee as you are off to Wal-Mart looking for a black turtle-neck just so you can look like your pretentious little hero.
Engadget, when are you going to start deleting this crap? Over the past few days, you have had postings about pyramid schemes, some guy promoting his favorite crappy music video, and the iEye/clak twins/same person making spamming about the iPhone in every single article , related or not, and have made personal attacks - many of which violates the TOS (click on the link at the bottom if you forgot them). This place over the past few days has turned into a huge advertisement for Apple/MTV/and get rich quick schemes, and is quickly turning into a joke - especially when you have deleted other posts (including a few of mine) for much less.

WHAT ???
you like 13 or sumtin ??
Dragonpark @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:18PM
And this problem of having to refocus is not an issue in the current GPS units? Having a HUD on your screen is a hell of a lot safer than having to divert your eyes off the road to look at a small 3 inch screen.
Not only will everyone have to divert their attention and refocus, but most people will be forced to squint in order to read such a small display. A HUD (most likely combined with voice activation) will allow a very large display and you still still be able to give somewhat limited attention to the road.

And this is different to looking at your speedometer... how???
Think about that one when you try to sleep tonight.

Geez those aircraft guys are always crashing due to HUD on the flyscreen. What a Knob (like a door)!
Oh by the way, no one cares about iphones that woudl of even read that article.
Danny @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:22PM
The whole point of HUDs is that they project the image at an infinite focal length rather than requiring focus on the windscreen itself. That way you don't need to avert your eyes or change your focal length.

feautures is not a word engadget!!

They are constantly trying to break the record: shortest post with as much as possible inaccuracy, speculation, ignorant bashing, and so on. They beat themselves day after day.

Yawn
Edward @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:50PM
I dont know about all that guys, there are many cars that project stuff onto windshield, try higher class cars. Lexus, BMW, Cadillac, Nissan used to...
I would think that if a car manufacturer made this, they have to pass many rigorous tests, and I therefore deem it safe.

With the HUD focus issue, I do believe there is a way to focus it at infinity instead of close range. Photographers use this principal all the time.
Referencing the heads up display article on Wikipedia, HUD's have been in select vehicles since the mid 1990's
