Movistar nabs iPhone in Spain
Apple's relentless quest to spread the iPhone to every corner of the universe has officially nabbed yet another carrier. Movistar has been announced as an official partner for Spain, though no clues have been given about the launch date -- a common trend with the iPhone carrier partnership press releases as of late, we've noticed -- and the best that interested parties can do right now is sign up to be notified when more information becomes available. Any suckers out there want to bet us that they'll be launching the EDGE model? No?

Spread them to Mars.
Or make it 3G. :)
heffeque @ Jun 2nd 2008 8:34AM
It'll be the 3G version for sure. Telefónica Movistar already has more than 80% of the population with 3G coverage, and also has a pretty good 3.5G coverage too.
The mayor cities have 3.5G with 7.2 Mbps of download speed and 2 Mbps of upload.
All towns bigger than 100.000 inhabitants plus 180 relevant villages have older 3.5G with 3.6 Mbps speeds.
And almost the rest of the population have 3G with 384 Kbps speeds.
As for were there isn't any 3G, there's 2.5G (GPRS with 114 Kbps speeds) in 99% of the country.
I think that Movistar will do OK as for networks.
Jamar @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:56AM
Wow, sounds almost like Japan. 7.2Mb?
derX @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:11AM
"Apple's relentless quest to spread the iPhone to every corner of the universe has officially nabbed yet another carrier."
I'm not hating on Apple or anything, but as soon as I read that I though: Wow, sounds like the iPhone is a communicable disease and Apple is up to no good.
nak @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:14AM
It looks like they're expecting under 100,000 people to get on the waitlist. At least I think that's what the number is... how many people are on the waitlist.
JLTate @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:16AM
I swear, Engadget, you guys have no shame when it comes to--
Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!!
Dillon @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:16AM
Yo quiero Tacobell!! Oh wait no, I mean Movistar.
derX @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:22AM
iEn Espana, Tacobell te quiere a ti!
(In Spain, Tacobell wants you!)
Hrm, not as funny in Spanish....then again, it's not really funny in English, either.
*glares at relentless Borat impersonators*
Dillon @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:28AM
That's not a Borat impersonation you just did their dude. It's actually an impersonation of a comedian called Yako Smirnoff. I could see why one would confuse the two, because that sounds like a very Borat thing to say.

I am noticing every knee jerk action that come from apple is becomming news on engadget, which is truly pointless.
I am also noticing fanboys of apple who are ediots, keep posting in every topic with simply noting to say about the tipic but must mention something about apple.
So I am asking all you fanboys from MS and Apple to keep you fat fingers off your keyboards, so we can read the comments of a topic that has something to do with that topic and not some off comment about how apple created the world firs and God copyed them.
mmendoza27 @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:08AM
Yeah, what is the world becomming? All these ediot Apple fanboys... posting on every Apple tipic, claiming to be firs all the time... claiming that Microsoft copyed them.
LOL, I'm just messing around. I agree, sometimes Apple fans can be overwhelming, why can't we all just get along? And yes, it's weird how sometimes I visit Engadget first for Apple news before TUAW.
tchapp @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:12AM
If you're gonna insult and bag on "fanboys" at least have the common courtesy to spell correctly...especially when insulting people who are judging you on your ignorant remarks.
over all: fail.
TheCow5 @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:38AM
"spell correctly."
I will agree with that, I was in a rush, Sorry.
Jesse S @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:43AM
Why the fuck is this news? Does Engadget have a post every time some outdated sack of crap is picked up by Telecom Zimbabww?
phanbouy @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:44AM
lol i see what you did there... this way you camouflage your comment from being the usual apple hate-bait. you're so clever that i'm fooled. oh wait...
Øivind @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:56AM
So I guess it isn't news if any popular gadget is released in the US either? I'm sure a certain percentage of the 40 million people living in Spain find it newsworthy.
Leo M. @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:02AM
You do realize that the United States isn't the only country on this planet, right? Just because you don't care, doesn't mean other people are as disinterested in things that happen in the rest of the world. DO YOU REALIZE THAT 95% OF THE WORLD'S POPULATION DOES NOT RESIDE IN THE U.S.???? Amazing isn't it?
marty.com.au @ Jun 2nd 2008 1:55AM
Engadget, enough with the apple has signed up another.....
It was interesting when in USA they went with one and only one distributor... they are not doing that any more... for example, in Australia they have signed with every carrier here...
so are you going to tell us that nokia, LG, etc etc etc as signed with (insert name of every carrier in the world) EVERY time they release a new model?
Its not news any more...
let me give you an example:
NEWS:= Henry ford had his first car roll out the production line today.
NOT NEWS:= Dateline 2008 June 02 Another car rolled out of the production line at Ford today and it was blue!
Get the picture????
phanbouy @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:04AM
and for example, in Soviet Russia... (oh shit, already used that one in this thread! woulda been sweet)
d'oh had to do it!
...car distribute *you*
Rich @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:01AM
Agreed. More gadget news, less carrier news please!
phrogg @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:55AM
And now on to other news:
Today, Steve Jobs woke up, ate, and pooped, proving once and for all that he is, in fact human like the rest of us. And now the weather.
The coming week should be mostly sunny, with a smattering of iPhone posts throughout. Highs are expected to be in the mid-Apple, with lows around MacBook.
Sports this week will see some amazing feats, with the Apple iPhones taking on the MacBook Airs in a thrilling double-header. The series will be shown exclusively on iTunes.
Seriously, is this all there is in tech news anymore?
Blah @ Jun 2nd 2008 4:29AM
3G iPhone will be launched in spain this month, not that old crap (available in spain months ago btw..)
Dauphin @ Jun 2nd 2008 5:19AM
hey guys, you know what?? i think there are enough post in engadget for everyone to read, if you don't like the posts about iPhone or any other apple product then simply scrool down and read something else... i've never understood why or what's the need to post something as useless as criticism.. if you don't like it you don't like it, but there are people interested on those post.. let's say.. the spanish people wanting the device, or the millions of people in south america that get Telefonica's service and might get the phone via the carrier..
I for one am very interested in knowing how the developments for Europe launches of the iPhone come.. for example here in Belgium Mobistar ( the france telecom sister company for belgium) hasn't made any announce yet about the iphone, however france telecom did say officially that they'd bring the phone...
I am more than happy to read this kinda post... and i'm sure there are a lot of people that like them too.. but for those who don't, find your own thing.. a little tolerance doesn't kill anyone
smrtboy15 @ Jun 2nd 2008 5:32AM
This has to be the 3G version cause Spain doesn't have EDGE at all.
Juan Cambeiro @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:34AM
Hummm.....
It looks like this website was not meant to be accessible yet.
At least, you can't gain access to it right now.
It looks like someone has "unwillingly?" spoiled the susprirse....
Maestro @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:50AM
Movistar? You Europeans have the cutest names for your cell phone carriers.
Viakenny @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:38AM
and there's other carrier in Spain called "Yoigo" (coming from "yo oigo", "I hear", "I listen"), owned by TeliaSonera.
and that makes the third country where Telefónica has the iPhone. The UK (O2), Ireland (O2) and its home country of Spain (movistar - and yes, it's all lowercase).
ji123 @ Jun 2nd 2008 8:36AM
For those of you that say this post is rubbish, there is no EDGE in Spain, so they are talking about the 3G model.
Suddenly, Spanish news are US news.
holycow @ Jun 2nd 2008 10:23AM
Why is there an ITALIAN SOCCER JERSEY in an ad in SPAIN right before the Euro Cup ?
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:56PM
Exactly.
What the hell?

Canada is already on the sign up list.

If you haven't got this by now, you're an idiot.
Apple is going to release the iPhone world wide on the 9th of June.
Jakob Henner @ Jun 3rd 2008 7:44AM
Sorry I'm a little troll, but when TeliaSonera announced the iPhone deal for the Scandinavian, Nordic and Baltic countries it wasn't breaking news. I know Spain is bigger than these countries, but Telia will cover about 32 mio. people, while Moviestar will cover 45 mio. people, not a significant difference.
Travers @ Jun 3rd 2008 9:38AM
This seems as good a place as any to ask: has a set date for the release of a 3G capable version of the Iphone been announced. In Australia we expect to receive the phone late this year, but have been given no conformation the release will be a 3G model. > Australia has 3G in all major cities.
