Nokia's patent for potential N85 reveals unstoppable camera fetish
Nokia's always coming up with some new harebrained scheme for cramming a gargantuan camera lens into one of its new phones -- trust us, if the Finnish phone giant could accomplish this task by breaking into Fort Knox or compromising your precious bodily fluids, it would. The latest effort by Nokia comes in the form of a patent that might point the way to an upcoming video phone, possibly the N85, which could give current compact shooters a run for their money. Current thinking on that device is that it'll be a video-oriented successor to the N96, with a WQVGA screen and a 5 (or maybe even 8) megapixel camera. It's mostly conjecture at this point, but we hope Nokia accomplishes it with a thinner device than we're looking at in this patent.

That's one ugly phone.
Shinigami @ Jun 3rd 2008 12:44PM
Phone? Thats a brick... Put lots of these on cement and you'll have a high-tech wall xD
Manuel @ Jun 2nd 2008 2:52PM
Last!

Am I the only person who likes the chunkiness of Nokia smartphones? Not everyone likes a flimsy, tiny thing you can barely grip...
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:07PM
I have an N95. It's the mutt's nuts.
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 2nd 2008 4:00PM
It all depends. I don't particularly like belt holsters, and bulky gizmos don't agree with work slack pockets.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 4:14PM
Which is why Nokia have the E71.
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:04PM
First of all, this phone already exists and many people have already held it in their hands. Secondly, this patent that you covered last year hasn't been linked to the N85 in any way. This phone has been confirmed as being 5 megapixels so throw that "(or maybe even 8)" away. Finally, the people that have already played with the N85 say that it's smaller than the N96 and the N96 is bigger than the device in that patent.
Yahh trick yahhhhh!
IT-Accountant @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:05PM
Dude. That was harsh. Engadget is just trying to report, man.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:06PM
I think you're confusing the N85 with the N82.
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:07PM
I think I'm not.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:14PM
Actually I think you are - there are images of the 'N85' on the intarweb but they look like N81s, 82s, 95s and 96s to me.
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:15PM
I know what I'm talking about here. Run along.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:16PM
Which is why you're going to show me a link to the product.
Or you're just going to keep talking out of your arse. One of the two.
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:20PM
Lol, I really can't be arsed to argue with you so I'll settle it here and now. There are NO images of the N85 on the internet and I'm not mistaking it for the N82.
The weed is strong in this one.
Larry Kelley @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:25PM
@ Engadgetluvsappl Have you ever tried not being a douche?
Sarig @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:26PM
Well, I suppose we'll just take your word for it then, since you've given us a great deal of reasons to belie- oh wait, no you haven't!
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:27PM
*Sigh*
I know the N85 (or Gadget if you prefer) is coming out, it's just the final build specs haven't been released yet and the model Teo at Symbian-Freak and others got is a very early prototype so you can't say if it's really going to have a 5Mp camera or not.
Clear?
Engadgetluvsappl @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:34PM
I know that they received early prototypes, all I'm doing here is correcting Mr. Miller with what we've heard from people that have actually touched the device. Besides, I'm pretty sure I read that Gadget WOULD be 5MP somewhere, maybe I'll try to dig it up.
Oh, Sarig, citing people that have actually seen the device in question surely can't be more reason to believe me than an Apple loving editor at Engadget. Yup.
Mark Anderson @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:39PM
Well yes, but as Teo says:
"I know that there are two new Nseries phones on the way and one of them is a really promising device, killer phone with improved camera part, great high resolution screen and a bunch of features that I'm not allowed to speak about"
Improved camera part could mean a number of things from resolution to sensor to flash.
Pdexter @ Jun 2nd 2008 5:46PM
Hmm why are you people giving him low ranks? Cant give links... Ipod touch
But go look mobile-review forums go rumours section starting from page 97 great EldarMurtazin talks about this phone :D Same with Teo from SymbianFreak those both really are insiders and have talked us thrue about many other phones.
Oh and btw this picture was released year back and no one have actually said this has anything to do with N85. Somebody in Symbianfreak asked Teo if N85 was going to use this patent, but he really didnt say anything about it.
+Eldar said the product seemed ready so hopefully we will see it soon..actually thinking about E71 it might mean nothing ;)
Jamma @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:05PM
tis fake!! nokia's designs will all have the new navi wheel and media button in the right, like on the n96 and n81!
Michael LaFramboise @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:14PM
Jamma, I don't think you quite understand the idea behind a "patent" -- its not meant to show off every single button/feature etc on the device in question. In most cases its meant to describe an idea as vaguely as possible w/o revealing too much about the end product...
Jamma @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:33PM
yeah you're right, i've not had enough coffee today, that's all
Gibran Aslam @ Jun 2nd 2008 4:02PM
MOT!

THANK YOU- I thought I was having a major case of déja vu...
Nick Ritch @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:49PM
I was thinking the same thing.
Ayman @ Jun 2nd 2008 4:43PM
same here
Clumsy @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:19PM
I sold my iPhone for the N95 and it was a smart move. The iPhone was too thin for me and I was always scared to drop it. Also, I prefer to "feel" the buttons!
Reader @ Jun 2nd 2008 6:27PM
With a name like Clumsy, no wonder you were afraid to drop it.
Wolfticket @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:18PM
Much love to nokia for being the only ones trying to cram in a big lens rather than a big number that you can use to sell cameras to idiots.
kerry @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:34PM
I think what's really newsworthy here is what's labeled "#22"--is that a sliding flash?
Chuck @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:44PM
I have had quite a few mobile phones and the N95 is the best i've come across so far (I can't stand using my Sony P1i anymore), so i'm pretty excited any new high end smartphone Nokia is putting out. Keep up the good work.
Paradox @ Jun 2nd 2008 3:57PM
It's a promising phone, looking forward to see it in colors lol
thethirdmoose @ Jun 2nd 2008 5:40PM
That looks like a "6" to me...
O NOES!! IT'S 1/3 OF THE DEVIL!
poisonborz @ Jun 2nd 2008 7:30PM
Uhm... What is the point of having a camera lens looking sideways, if the screen can't be rotated in the right direction to function as a viewfinder? At least looking at the pic does not reveal any rotating mechanism...
raging_hamsterx @ Jun 2nd 2008 8:32PM
I hear General Jack Ripper has one of these camera phones that actually sucks the life out of you. In liquid form.
Jayden @ Jun 2nd 2008 9:22PM
What the fuck thats a 6 you idiot
