Qualcomm lets the Windows Mobile 7 cat out of the bag along with $299 mini laptop
As if things weren't confusing enough in the world of tiny computers, Qualcomm went and blurted off news about a $299 machine that will run Windows Mobile 7 on its Snapdragon mobile chip set. Qualcomm's senior veep Luis Pineda boasted that the machine will run WinMo7 and is more efficient than its competitors from the likes of Intel, AMD, and Via. When pressed, he wouldn't give up any additional hardware specs, but he promises a "big presence in Snapdragon-based devices at CES 2009". This isn't the first time we've seen mention of Windows Mobile 7, but it's quite possibly the first tie-in with a specific product group. We look forward to the Snapdragon-Intel-AMD-Via mobile computing war in the coming year, indeed.

Um... that's hot.
*starts saving pennies*
that is quite possibly NOTHING like what it will look like. if you read the article you'll see that's an existing device which they think the new device might be the successor too.

Maybe he was talking about the fact that you can get a mini laptop for 299$.
id buy one in a second, providing it had reasonable spex.
a "mini laptop" running Windows Mobile? What makes it different from a PDA then?

You forgot nVidia!

I agree.
ENGADGET! Please don't forget to add Nvidia into such lists!
Even though it seems like Nvidia will actually dominate over all others if it really plays 1080p content and is capable of playing music for 130 hours on a single charge.
But does it have drivers...
Why do manufacturers still keep on insisting on peddling the crap that is Windows Mobile?
Yuck. Windows Mobile 7 only function is to infect us all with Live Mesh;
"That's why I would never stoop to Low-Rank a WinMo lover that dearly clings on to the past. Basically they are already Low-Ranking themselves so further Low-Ranking is unnecessary."
"Just what the world needs: another WinCrap mobile device."
Remember, folks, these are the same people that get pissy when you dare be critical of products from AppleCo, but they will go to a new story and pull the same thing themselves.
Wow, Fred. Way to be an elitist asshole.
@Darkest
Initially I was with you, but after reading further down I don't think he was trying to be elitist -- those statements are quotes from other comments. Seems he just forgot the quotation marks and replied to the wrong thread.
Why do manufacturers still keep on insisting on peddling the crap that is Windows Mobile?
I had the misfortune of owning a Windows Mobile 5 device and it was poor enough to put me off ever using a WM system again.
Why limit yourself to a mobile OS? A good linux ARM distribution will have support for nearly every peripheral that desktop x86 linux has and that's a vast vast quantity.
"Why do manufacturers still keep on insisting on peddling the crap that is Windows Mobile?"
Gee, I don't know, maybe because people like it and use it?
Yeah I know.....
"My personal opinion is the opinion shared by all"!
I love the windows mobile operating system, loved it from the very beginning. They keep installing it because there is enough of a fan base that will keep on buying the devices. I personally have already owned the following:
MPX200
MPX220
Siemens SX66
AT&T 2125
T-mobile SDA
AT&T 8125
Samsung Blackjack
T-mobile Dash
Palm Treo 750v
Qtek 8500
HTC s710
Motorola Q
Dopod C730
HTC Kaiser and an AT&T Tilt
Motorola Q9h
Samsung Blackjack II
So in 5 years I have purchased over 17 windows mobile phones, so there are some genuine fans out there
I'll tell you why manufacturers continue to use Windows Mobile: It beats the hell outta Palm OS, and Linux isn't really geared towards mobile hardware, yet anyway. Plus, there is loads of third-party support for it, it's pretty easy to code for, and ever since Pocket PC 2003 SE it's been pretty damn reliable. I've got an HTC Titan and it kicks ass, especially with the 6.1 ROM I have on it.
can anyone (include dear editors) read the paragraph which goes like:
"The laptop, made by Taiwan's Inventec, is small and streamlined because the low-power chips inside don't need much space to disperse heat. But it runs on a Linux OS, which is less familiar to most people than Microsoft Windows.".
note the sentence: "but it runs on a Linux OS"
Did you even READ THE ARTICLE?
It RUNS LINUX. They are HOPING to have other OSs on the same hardware and are hoping Win Mob 7 is one of those extra CHOICES.
Look, you may not like Blue trousers, but nobody is going to force them on you, ok? Its a choice, take it or leave it - its simple!
NOTE to editor: Your headlines are very misleading. The actual article (i.e. news source) is along different lines.
Windows mobile is a steaming pile of dogshit. It's buggy as hell, slow and laggy, and so unstable you have to hard-reset phones every day. I've used both v5 and v6 on a few different devices, and I will NEVER go back EVER AGAIN. It's like Windows ME!
And to whoever said "Linux isn't really geared towards mobile devices",
Do I really need to answer that??? Linux derivatives are in use all over the world in mobile devices, and there are at least 4 foundations creating mobile Linux platforms.
hmmm.....mobile 7 eh?
Yuck. Windows Mobile 7 only function is to infect us all with Live Mesh;
https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/LearnMore.aspx
...and Live Mesh's only function is to try to stop us all from abandoning the desktop and chain us to Windows.
That was the most horribly boring pedantic tour I ever saw.
Come on, they didn't even show if media player could seamlessy work over it. Also, it makes you do far too many configuration steps. It's nice to have a high degree of control but it shouldnt force it.
Do you know even know what Live Mesh is? Live Mesh is designed to synchronize many devices all at once, and NOT chain you to a desktop.
Also, how exactly do you know what's happening in WinMo 7? Ignroance coming from Todd.
I want Live Mesh. It would make getting files and stuff to my WM phone so much easier and flexible.. i wouldnt have to be at my computer or plug my phone in with a usb cable to sync music, documents, or pictures.
Just what the world needs: another WinCrap mobile device.
The WM haters must feel really bad when Qualcomm with the Snapdragon, NVIDIA with the Tegra rally around WM, when Asus says they plan to make 10% of their income from WM, when Sony Ericsson comes over to WM, when LG and Samsung and Motorola all release new desirable WM devices.
Dont worry, Apple still has a cripplePhone for you.
We Apple iPhone fanbois really like handsets that use WinMo. They make the iPhone and Mobile OS X look that much better in comparison.
That's why I would never stoop to Low-Rank a WinMo lover that dearly clings on to the past. Basically they are already Low-Ranking themselves so further Low-Ranking is unnecessary.
Needless to add: 3G iPhone FTW, WWDC June 9th. The 3G iPhone media flood begins.
Between Microsoft forking its customers on its DRM schemes and Apple forking its customers on openness of its handsets, I'd say neither company has a lock on the "Customer-centric Firm of the Year" Award.
Here's hoping Android steps in to fill a really big void.
Unless Mobile IE on WM7 catches up with the iPhones Safari browser then the iPhone still wins in my book. Plus the HDD space is nice when most other phones only give you SD card slots for extra storage. Even though I've never liked iPods I'll probably wind up getting the iPhone v2 because of Apple's key advantages. This coming from someone who prefers the Zune over the iPod lol.
@stefan jobs... "We Apple iPhone fanbois"
Just an FYI but I live in hollywood and spelling boys "bois" is what the gay men in west hollywood do to express their homosexuality... there are a lot of "bois clubs" and the such on santa monica blvd... just thought I'd throw that out there in case you ever ended up in WeHo and find yourself in an *uncomfortable* situation... That might be why.
AHAHHAH! "CripplePhone".. That would be almost funny except for the sad reality that "Windows mobile" is a flaming piece of dog shit.
I can't believe ANYONE would actually like punishing themselves so much that they'd actually use Windows mobile on a voluntary basis! They are sick in the head I tell you.
If you don't want the Jesusphone, then Android is the only hope for you!
Knee jerk "M$" bashing is tired. I have a the standard ATT WM 6.0 rom on my Tilt and it seems pretty damned good to me. I've replaced the interface and done some tweaks, but that has more to do with ATT's initial config than the OS itself. WM 6.1 looks impressive right out of the box (I'll wait for the official ATT rom... just in case). Add the huge variety of third-party apps for WM and it can make your phone extremely versitile and powerful.
To me, multi-touch WM 7 on a phone running at 1Ghz for $299 sounds excellent. It's a pretty big leap over what's available today for anywhere near that price.
"extremely versatile and powerful" ?? Hahah. Have you actually USED any 3rd party windows mobile applications?? Most of the crapware is worse than the apps I ran on the old PalmOS from the 1990s. Not that the windows mobile OS or any of it's default apps are an improvement.
I'm definitely not a "knee-jerk" MS basher. I've had windows PCs for ages, and am a .NET developer. But you guys are kidding yourself if you think the pile of dogshit that is Windows mobile has anything going for it. God forbid, If I had to, I'd probably go back to PalmOS garnet before I would WM.
I don't understand WM fanboys! Why on earth do you use such garbage and defend it. If you really wanted a decent system, you would go to great lengths to avoid it so Microsoft actually gets the message that they need to put some real resources into improving it.
Mobile OSX and now Android blow windows mobile out of the water. I
mean literally, there is just no comparison. Even Symbian and Nokia's Tablet OS are miles ahead.
I hope WM dies a quick death after Android is released, but knowing Microsoft, they will probably PAY cellphone manufacturers to keep putting their crap OS into the phones. I wish they would just kill the whole damn project and start completely fresh and rewire the whole damn kernel, libraries, and everything.
What happened to Engadget? I'm starting to doubt the hundreds of "summaries" I've read that could have possibly had nothing to do with the articles they were referencing.
Engadget's summary made me feel a WM7 smartphone was imminent, and where the hell did they get that photo from?
forget about what I said... actually I was reading the Engadget summary with the smartphone idea already in my head :)
Maybe just maybe fellas....this will run Android by the time the hardware is released...now there is something to think about.....
Um... How is this a mini laptop if it runs Windows Mobile? That would just make this a PDA.
Don't forget to include nVidia in this WM showdown list, Engadget!
It sure appears that several commentators on here have no recollection of the history of pda's or laptops. This Qualcomm is nothing more than history repeating itself, some ten to fifteen years after the fact. It was a great idea back in the mid-nineties and it's still a great idea. Perhaps this time the public will finally realize what they let slip past them and buy into it like they should have before.
Footnote: My nine-year-old Vadem Clio still steals the spotlight where ever it goes. People in public places can't help but comment on it and ask, "Wow!!! Where can I get one like that? Is it released to the public yet?"
