Western Digital launches 7200RPM Scorpio Black laptop HDD
WD has been shipping a 320GB laptop hard drive for months now, but its latest line of alternatives features a few niceties reserved for the Scorpio Black label. Available in 80/120/160/250/320GB sizes, the 2.5-inch drive boasts a 7200RPM spin speed, SATA interface and 16MB of cache. The units are destined for use in OEM systems as well as by end-users looking to upgrade their current rig, and beyond the specs listed above, you'll also find IntelliSeek, SecurePark, ShockGuard and WhisperDrive technologies alongside a built-in free-fall sensor. The whole lot is available now, with the 320GB edition topping out at $249.

PS.: Those are all 1 TiB drives.
Screw speed. I want space. I want a 500GB HDD for my MacBook. I keep my movie library in there (No, not my pr0n. That's on an external drive.) and when I'm sitting around with nothing to do, it's kind of handy to pull up any of my DVDs or TV shows and watch them on the laptop.
Since each one takes up about 1.6GB of space, I'd get a lot of use out of a big laptop hard drive.
Sure, I could put them on an external, but that's one more thing I'd have to connect. It's a pain in the ass. I want an all-in-one solution. Besides, I like having them in iTunes so I can catalog them, rate them, and watch them in Front Row easily. If they're on an external, they're not "in" iTunes.
500GB mobile hard disks have been "announced" a while ago. Of course, they don't seem to be on sale anywhere as far as I can see. I am definitely in the market too. However - 320GB at 7200 RPM - if it were available now, which it isn't, contrary to what WD and the article say - would be very tempting.
I have had a 7200 RPM drive before and the speed difference is much larger than on paper mostly because the 7k drives are a lot faster on small random read/writes, and small random read/writes happen for pretty much all OS tasks, booting, and compiling.
not available now - if you go to the WD site - you can pre-order the version that does NOT have "free fall sensor" the version with the "free fall sensor" does not permit you to pre-order at this time... : (
i really really really want one of these... i thought about getting a slower 5400 one but then i'll lose 20% performance on my macbook pro 17" and that would suck big time. so please please tell me where to get one...
