Dell 2709WFP reviewed but not yet announced
Though they aren't publishing any photo proof, CNET's claiming the first review of the Dell 2709W, a yet-unannounced 27-incher that will supposedly debut in Australia for $1,200 AU (about $1,150 US). Looking a little more like its 30-inch counterpart, the 2709WFP has two DVI ports, DisplayPort, HDMi, and apparently even multiple 3.5mm jacks for surround sound passthrough over HDMI. All in all it sounds like the reviewers felt this is one to keep an eye out for. You know, whenever it's announced.

shame its only 1,920x1,200, pretty low for a 27"; considering when you can get 23" displays at that resolution...
phanbouy @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:52AM
exactly... what's the point of a low res big screen besides movies? my 24" has that res and i wouldn't want a bigger display with the same res.
Michael LaFramboise @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:57AM
phanbouy, yup, but lets be honest, if you're looking for a display for watching movies, you're better of just connecting a 30-40" LCD/Plasma tv to your computer...
but this is like putting a 1440x900 display on a 17" laptop (as some manufacturers do) :/ just doesn't work...
nerdybails @ Jun 3rd 2008 3:26AM
TBQH I dont know about you guys but keeping the resolution down actually makes me want one because it means i get a bigger screen for my movies and games but I dont get the resolution tax of a higher resolution for gaming and thus videocard demands.
I think you would have to see it in person but i cant see 27 inches of 1920x1200 loving being so bad youd rather go back to a 24 inch than use it.
that just seems... elitist

Or you could just sit closer if you want a bigger screen.
SirMasterboy @ Jun 3rd 2008 3:37AM
Agreed, I love my laptop lcd with a 15.4" 1920x1200 screen resolution :-)

How can you even read the text? You must be right up on the screen for that.

I wish they made desktop monitors that dense.

2709? Given the size/year convention we're accustomed to seeing in their displays what happened to the 2708? I can only assume it suffered the same production aggro. as the 3008 at this point...

The question is: would it be S-PVA like the 24" or S-IPS like the new 30"?
bjorn_ahlm @ Jun 3rd 2008 5:22AM
S-PVA, there are no 27" S-IPS panels.
wickedpheonix @ Jun 3rd 2008 8:37AM
surround sound passthrough from HDMI? Sounds like what I need right now - anybody know a cheap little box that can handle this?
David @ Jun 3rd 2008 2:34PM
I thought the same thing about 1920x1200 on a 27" being too big, but I now have one right in front of me and it's just amazing.
You really have to see it!

I own both Dell 3008WFP and Dell 2707WFP and I very happy with them, a solid build quality and metal construction is a big plus.
In particular the antracite brushed finish of the 3008 is striking at first sight.
I have seen more REAL pictures of the new 2709W, the one you publish is VERY retouched. The new monitor appareance and feeling is a big dissapointment, the price is nearly the same but all the money seems now to be directed to more connectivity. (by the way the S-VHS connector is gone.)
The panel is enclosed in a cheap, black boxy plastic frame, with a flimsy looking power button in the corner and an absurd hidden luminiscent row of menu buttons in the right,
If they want a clear design why can´t they use a row of buttons behind the frame ?.
Of course the luxury glass base is also absent, bye bye quality !!!
The S-PVA Samsung panel is still there but my advice is: if you can still buy an original 2707 go and buy it now !!!!
EB
Sure the panel (S-PVA from Samsung) is still good but

I'm going to buy this thing to replace my 2004wfp solely for the audio pass through -- I've got a klipsch Ultra 5.1 speaker rig laying around and I hope this monitor makes it useful again. : )
As others said, pair this thing with an ATI HD 4870 and get some decent gaming without having to break the bank on a $600+ card to run it.
And if you watch movies... what's the point of anything above 1920x1200 anyways? That's 1080p....
