It looks like that mysterious listing on Dell's support site for a
"Studio 1535" laptop is evidence of a larger branding push soon to come -- we just got a tip that says Dell's planning on creating an entire Studio line as "a midpoint between performance XPS systems and entry-level Inspiron systems." The first machines out of the gate will apparently be those
rumored 1535 and 1735 laptops we caught a glimpse of last month (the 1435 appears to have been canned), but we're being told that eventually there'll be Studio desktops as well, and that the 1535 will get an AMD-based 1536 twin. All still rumors for now, but they dovetail nicely with the recent
merger of the XPS and Alienware teams and Dell's hints at "new directions" for XPS -- and based on the obviously-related design language of the
XPS m1530 and Studio 1535, we'd even go so far as to guess that the Studio line is destined to replace the XPS line, not simply supplement it. We'll see when we see -- any other theories out there?
June 5th? Wtf, I just ordered a m1530 yesterday.
Hmmm, maybe that's why there's a 25% off XPS coupon that expires on the 12th.
If people want glossy, let them have glossy. Just give us a choice between glossy and matte, and everyone can have what they want! (I want matte finish.)
That gradient on the screen looks like something from Paint.Net. No offense... but this looks fake, also, the screen's edges are cut-off.
EMZ=P
So not just Apple can make pretty things. I'm surprised Dell has stepped up their game. Take that steve 'hobo' jobs!!
The desgin is extremely cool and all but I just have one question - Doesn't it look a little too tame for a XPS replacement? I mean even the current XPS laptop range as well as the XPS laptops before this were much more jazzier...
Isn't the point that this will slot in between the Inspiron and where the XPS is now?
The top of the screen looks cropped, but if you look closely, there's a difference in shading that indicates where the bezel would be. The previous leaked story talked about a flush screen option. Maybe this is just a rendering of that?
I don't mind glossy, but I wonder if matte would be available as a flush screen.
Just got an Inspiron with a glossy screen. I Love it.
Those look nice, and I hated the ugly XPS logo anyway, so if these replace the XPS line I'll be fine with it.
I really hope they replace the m1330 with a laptop of the same size, though.
I like it, with the exception of the glossy screen! I hope they give users a choice between glossy and matte.
The XPS line has an identity crisis, is it a gaming line or a style line?
If they make XPS a more gaming focused line, the Inspiron the 'utility' line, theres definitely room for a third 'style' line, with good media focused spec.
looks good but uhmmmm looks a LOT like the Lenovo IdeaPad laptops released earlier this year.
Looks much more thought out/cleaner than the Lenovos, I think.
Looks very nice.
I hope their sturdy unlike my 700m!
The 700m is a rugged machine in my experience except for the connection between the motherboard and the speakers. The screen on it is way better than my Macbook, it's got a card reader, and it still gets 5hrs of battery life. And I've beat on that thing. Keyboard layout for the right hand was miserable, but for the 850 I paid for that thing shipped with A/B/G, dvd burner, etc, it has been spectacular. In my experience, at least.
Totally stole that keyboard design from Sony [R505]
X505*
LOL another macbook ripoff - count they keys - they've got the same number!
I'd guess Dell is noting the trend towards small, low cost, energy efficient computers and planning to combine it with some decent design work to differentiate its Studio products from the rest of the crowd.
So I'd imagine the Alienware/XPS gets merged into the gaming/HPC ok... well gaming... product brand, Studio is the small and sweet, Atom centric "lifestyle" product brand, and Inspiron the economy brand.
Studio seems more about high style than low cost, vs. eg. its not head to head with the EEE, but for now its wait and see the price tags I suppose.
so, it's an Inspiron IdeaPad XPS Studio Line by L'Oréal Paris notebook from Dell? or maybe Lenovo?
oh, boy, I can't strike text here. (I was supposed to strike the "by L'Oréal Paris" part)
I'm confused about the picture. But the lack of info here makes me think that isn't the actual studio notebook. (but it's great that everybody seems to like it)
Yah I just took the tests for these models for Dell service techs today. Its funny as hell since there were placeholders for the larger pictures that listed [removed for security reasons]. Obviously Dell doesn't want these picts leaking out just yet. However from a design standpoint they are just as much of a PITA to repair as the 1530. With a few notable exceptions. Specifically a panel on the bottom of the laptop can be removed to access pretty much _everything_. from processor to GPU to RAM, to WLAN, PAN, etc. Take that Apple and your dumbass can't-remove-shit-in-the-MBP design. I'm really REALLY liking Dell's new designs. Enough so that as long as I can somehow get Leopard to work on it I'm prob going to replace my MBP with a Dell XPS in the next year.
If the bottom is really a big panel like what you said, that would be quite nice - it would be a great balance between a smooth bottom (like MacBooks - which is nice when you rest it on your lap) and ease of repair.
As I recall (and confirmed in a Wikipedia article recently), Michael Dell hired the fellow who was head of the design team for the Moto RAZR away when he took over at Dell at the beginning of last year. A while after that, the m1330 came out, followed by a few other decent-looking systems. I bet this Studio design is also a result of that fellow's work.
This thing looks just like the Lenovo base notebooks!!
