Intel's
Moblin tech is getting some big love at Computex -- first Canonical dropped the
Ubuntu Netbook Remix on us, and now Xandros has announced plans to support the MID- and netbook-targeted system additions in future editions of its Linux distros. If that seems a little confusing, it's because it is -- Moblin was never supposed to be a standalone Linux OS, but rather a
standardized Linux core stack designed to maximize the potential of Atom-based mobile devices. Of course, one of those mobile devices is a little machine called the
Eee that just happens to run Xandros, so it looks like Eee owners should look forward to better battery life, faster booting, and "expanded Internet and media capabilities." Now the real question: is that enough to get people to stay away from the
recently-revived-again Windows XP?

Is it just me, or does "Moblin" remind anyone of "goblin", and not pleasantly so? Like, goblins are not a nice thing to have come to your customers' minds when thinking of your product...

First word to come to mind was definitely "goblin". Then I figured it was derived from Mobile Linux.

Yeah, this is one of those times it would have been smart to listen to the marketing department, assuming they were even consulted (and, given the the name and the fact that it's a Linux-centric project (no surprise as Linux initiatives often have weird, esoteric &/or cerebral-sounding names), I have the feeling it was exclusively an engineering effort. That, or they decided Moblin was to be marketed mainly to engineers.
I say that with some discomfort as I am a Linux user exclusively that also happens to be a member of the "mainstream" population...)

Yep, the Ubuntu netbook remix will most certainly keep me away from a 7 year old operating system that's been shoehorned onto a smaller form factor and that also constantly second guesses my decisions.
"Yes I want to open that file! I know it's from the internet, I just downloaded it from there! THAT'S WHERE ALL MY FILES COME FROM!"

Oh no! Moblins! Hold! Brothers, hold!

Xandros. uggh.

ugh indeed.
I remember when I bought my asus eee, and how heartbroken I was when I got the infamous "pending" message. Because of Xandros, I came SO close to returning my Eee and getting an alternative netbook (the HP came to mind).
I'm now happily using ubuntu, and don't miss Xandros (besides penguin racer).
Xandros better have "expanded internet capabilities", because Eees are going to be returned in droves if they get the "pending" message.
Xandros RULES @ Jun 24th 2008 6:36PM
My understanding is that Xandros teamed up with Viyya Technologies to create the most awesome and unique internet search experience. The search engine throws away the junk websites and concentrates on what the viewer is looking for, giving a competitive edge in the work, home, and entertainment environments. Instead of getting 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 responses to a search with 99.9999999999999999999999999999% irrelevance, you will get only what you are looking for, eliminating the need to look through useless websites and refining searches until you find what you are looking for hours or days later.
