LG, AU Optronics said to be prepping 17.3-inch 16:9 LCD panels
As if we needed any more evidence that the 16:9 laptop bandwagon is already roaring right along, DigiTimes is now reporting that LG and AU Optronics are each readying some 17.3-inch panels boasting the increasingly common aspect ratio. If the usual unnamed "industry sources" are to be believed, those panels will supposedly be finding their way into laptops from Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, and Asustek, among others, although it's not clear when those will actually be showing up. Somewhat interestingly, those same sources also say that Samsung has no plans to produce 17.3-inch panels of its own, although at the rate these various slight changes in sizes keep cropping up, we wouldn't be surprised if that situation changed sooner rather than later.[Via TG Daily]

I want my extra little bit of aspect ratio... please dont take it way... 16:10 may be non standard for movies but they look just fine on my lappy.
Do you have to take your laptop to a Big & Tall shop to find desktop wallpapers that fit correctly?
No he can just use Automatic Wallpaper Changer from download.com and use its 'worst fit' mode to keep aspect ratio but fit them onto his screen with very little lost image.
best free program ever made :)
I'd rather have screens with much better contrast, higher refresh rate and having more colours instead of getting a new ratio.
16:10 is better then 16:9 because you can have the on screen controls at the top or bottom without covering any of the movie.
.
The shorter the screen, the more scrolling needed. The switch from 4:3 to 16:10 was fine, but we don't want a shorter screen.
agreed
how many movies are actually in 16:9? now that it's becoming a well-accepted consumer standard. every movie seems to be in 2.35:1 now...uber widescreen. i don't mind letterbox films, but on widescreen, it makes it even wider and you lose real estate.
The most common movie ratio (2.39:1) is too wide, I think 1.85:1 is most like the 'ratio' of the eye, a bit wider than 16:9, it can help to suspend the viewer's concentration on the point that they're viewing a monitor. So, sometimes in theatres they mask the projectors so they don't project that almost-black that reminds viewers they're watching a creation, as would having controls on all the time.
But for work that's about the opposite of useful, 16:10 works because it uses most of your eye whilst working with the math.
I bought one of the new 32" screened laptops. Mine is shaped like a Chevy Tahoe. People just stare at it like crazy. I hear them saying, "Where can I get one?"
The Tahoe special edition laptop features "street beam" technology which even allow you to project the laptop image into your office from the parking lot (won't reach over 2 stories though... but still).
Another things I like is not having to worry about battery life. A single charge can last for many, many, many days and if you use the battery for driving the laptop, it's constantly being charged!
