We're just four days away from
WWDC, so the rumor mill is churning at a fever pitch -- and the latest context-less bits of info to emerge from the churn are these purported photos of the 3G iPhone's touchscreens over at iLounge. Yeah, that's touch
screens, plural -- if these are to believed, Apple's got two sizes of iPhone in store for us on Monday: a 3.2-inch model, and a smaller 2.8-inch model. Note that both of those sizes are smaller than the current iPhone's 3.5-inch screen, which seems slightly implausible -- but kinda-sorta matches up
with other rumors we've heard, including those persistent "
iPhone nano" whispers from last year. We still really doubt that Apple will shrink the iPhone's screen size, however, and there are literally hundreds of touchscreen
iPhone KIRFs these panels could have come from, so we'd say there's a better chance this is just more hype -- but we know y'all have your own ideas. Let us know in comments!

This is way too much. Next thing, they'll start showing cardboard cutouts and try to pass it off as the next iPhone. I mean I like iPhone hype and buzz as much as the next fanboi, but this is really grasping at straws.
It's just that considering the 3G iPhone is probably already locked away in most the Apple Stores, that this is the best they can do. So unless someone can come up with some really interesting photos, I'll be resigned to wait four more days when the iPhone's world domination takes place.

Well, to be fair, Apple has been a major driving force in phones over the past year. It has been the dominant player in the mp3 player market for several years and also been influential in the laptop/desktop market.
You can pretend that Apple doesn't exist but I would suggest some other computer companies that have been as influential in coercing technological and cultural shifts.
You can hate Apple all you want, but if Apple is one of the bigger names in electronics, then Engadget, as a gadget blog, has the prerogative to post on Apple.
"but I would suggest" should read,
"and I challenge you to suggest" - sorry - thinking faster than I type
Why don't you go to Google and type in "iPhone" and see how many hits you get. Then type in the word "the Bible" and you'll notice there's a whole lot less hits. And the Bible has been around a whole lot longer than the iPhone.
I don't think it's just Engadget that's covering the iPhone, dude. So chill out and give them a break. Let's face it, people are interested in the iPHONE. The whole freakin' world. Comprende? Probably not. D'uh.

It is IMPOSSIBLE that Apple made the screen smaller. RUMOR RUMOR RUMOR.
The iPhone's size and width (but not weight) are perfect. I hope the HTC Dream comes in the same dimensions if not slightly bigger.

I really hope that they didn't make the screen size smaller. I have waited a hold year to finally get my hands on one of those "babes" ... and now having one with a smaller screen doesn't fit well with me.

forget about how they might look fake because everyone thinks all the pre-release photos look fake anyway. think about apple's theme, tagline and photo of the 2 golden gate bridges...it's definitely 2 unique big announcements or a pair of big announcements. this is the only rumor so far that fits the hints that apple gave out a month ago.
That's not the touchscreen. That's the entire phone.
Given the graphic for the meeting (two Golden Gate Bridges), it seems that "two" is a theme here, so two different iPhone models would fit quite well.
We've also heard rumors about a $200 iPhone. Perhaps the little one is $200 and meant for the entry level market. Two year contract could be in there somewhere as well.

Why doesn't Engadget mention this quote from the source in the post. Even if Engadget believes otherwise, they should have noted that their source had a completely different opinion.
I read a comment on a recent article that said Engadget's editors weren't even bothering to read all of the info in the article from their source. I'm starting to believe it...
I read it, but it's as much speculation as my thoughts. We credited them for the picture, but I respectfully disagree with their analysis, and no one's really going to know until Monday.
i think that would be dumb if they made the screen smaller because it's already difficult to type on the iphone.

These are particularly strange unless Apple has changed the technology in the touch panels as on the current model there are no cables or other electronic circutry attached, all thats there is a piece of glass, and trust me I know because I cracked the screen and pulled every single piece of glass off.
I think this might actually be real because a lot of the rumors say that the new iPhone iteration will be in 3 colors and 2 different sizes. I can definately see the bigger thicker 3G iPhone selling at premium along side a smaller non-3G model that is priced cheaper and could be your "iPhone nano" per se...
I could be wrong but these screens look more like passive digitizers and not capacitive touch.
