Ben Heck and eDimensional's Access Controller for one-handed gamers
Leave it to Ben Heck to create something that's not only cool, but also good for humanity. We've had our eyes on the Access Controller, and now it has an actual retail channel and final design. The eDimensional Access Controller enables one-handed gaming in a completely modular design. Each control function module can be rearranged based on the gamer's needs -- even the act of rearranging of modules can be done with one hand. Ben, the nice guy that he is, also includes a custom module-creation guide if you're so inclined. The controller is also designed with a concave back to sit comfortably on either a table or leg and uses 2.4GHz wireless. eDimensional is taking preorders now, and the unit is compatible with PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and PC. To top it all off, a portion of the $129.99 you spend will go to Children's Hospital and Veterans Medical centers. We feel all good inside.

monstroy @ Jun 5th 2008 7:55PM
It'd be awesome to see a co-op game being played by some [obviously skilled] dude with two of these.
CUBSWILLWIN @ Jun 5th 2008 2:00PM
nice to see ol' Ben to get a company to manufacture one of his items. Amazing, he is.
GSpruce @ Jun 5th 2008 2:03PM
I like the XBOX colored buttons, and if I'm not mistaken, buttons labeled "RB" and "LB" even though it's not compatible with XBOXen.
I realize Games for Windows could use those, just saying.
+1 if you spot the Brian Regan reference.
Evo1216 @ Jun 5th 2008 2:51PM

Rocket boy--
Grape or cherry? Which one is more favorite?
Rocketboy @ Jun 6th 2008 4:01PM
They're both my favorite, but grape is more my favorite...
Now if I could just figure out how many more doughnuts I need to make it to a dozen...
Victor @ Jun 5th 2008 2:02PM
I've both my hands, but I might like this for my left hand to use instead of a keyboard on different PC games.
...Or there are those console RPGs you can play at the same time as your eating a Hot Pocket with the other hand. Heh...
I'm not a slob!
CosterMonger @ Jun 5th 2008 2:02PM
multiplayer co-op without the lousy AI?
can you make one the will work for feet too? :)
Reid @ Jun 5th 2008 2:03PM
I have two hands, but I think I'm going to give this thing a try - super cool!

John Z @ Jun 5th 2008 2:33PM
I dig the idea-- and I'd love to drop the coin on it for charity-- but it's a little expensive. Plus, there's a ton of PC peripherals that add buttons for the "off" hand, so it's going to have some difficult market penetration. The customizability is a serious plus, though. Ben Heck Yeah.
Maximun2k10 @ Jun 5th 2008 2:34PM
129.00 ? o.O People abuse on prices when is a necessity and not a luxury...
Darkest Daze @ Jun 5th 2008 2:55PM
Or because it'll cost more to manufacture, being as it won't be in as high of demand to allow for cheaper production along with the fact it's modular. Definitely costs more to build 500 of something, then 100,000, like MS or Sony does when they make theirs.
Josh L @ Jun 5th 2008 3:05PM
Playing videogames is a necessity?
Tyler @ Jun 5th 2008 4:14PM
Actually, necessities are usually undercut by competitors, because necessities necessarily have great demand. Luxuries are where the real gouging happens.
Of course, this IS for charity. How much is too much for kids with cancer, jerk?
ratnikh @ Jun 5th 2008 5:39PM
Ok, let's see the cost of *your* custom-made, wireless, modular and reconfigurable, multi-system, one-hand game controller.
Oh, and don't forget a custom-molded case with wrist-rest and that you'll be donating part of the proceeds to charity.
Considering a standard wireless controller goes for anywhere from $30 to $50 and has virtually no customization options, *and* are mass produced by megacorporations, I'd say the $129 price tag is pretty damn reasonable.
Now buy one and help the sick kids and veterans, you stupid troll.
PDCant @ Jun 5th 2008 11:07PM
Before you comment, try playing with one hand tied behind your back (as in "I can beat you with...")
It's a necessity when you have only one hand. The closest controller was the old ColecoVision, but only because most of its games didn't use the numpad, only joystick and fire buttons.
It's not for the "off" hand; it's for those who have a hand off. Sheesh...
Jhongerkong @ Jun 5th 2008 3:13PM
This will be handy playing DOAX2
You know, so I can write a strategy guide while im playing
erik @ Jun 5th 2008 7:33PM
I see what you've done there.
Sim @ Jun 5th 2008 3:14PM
Anyone know why it is not compatible with the 360.
maty @ Jun 5th 2008 4:05PM
You could, y'know - make your own "if you're so inclined", or mod it yourself ;).
That and Ben has already made multiple 360 one-handed controllers with guides as to making them yourself.
The truth is; Ben was contracted by eDimensional, so he's made it to their specifications. That and cost would be a factor, to make a controller that supports -too- many platforms would be very expensive to the consumer.
I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a 360 one pop up sometime in the future, however.
canonmac kid @ Jun 5th 2008 3:15PM
will do wonders for pornographic games
Marty @ Jun 5th 2008 3:23PM
But I've gotten pretty good at fraggin and triple wall jumping with my hook hand.
Well, this is engadget, so i would say that the most popular answer to the question, "why not for Xbox" would be... FUCK YOU SONY-TENDO FANBOYS!
That's not MY answer per se, I'm just sayin'...
Xultar @ Jun 5th 2008 3:54PM
It look...lika paw.
Maximun2k10 @ Jun 5th 2008 4:30PM
@ Tyler
Jerk ???
Give ur adress and i'll show you !
Easy to talk shit on the internet !
Reader @ Jun 5th 2008 4:46PM
But what if I only have one hand and am extremely allergic to WiFi? Better get working on that too, Mr. Heck.
In all seriousness though, cool stuff. Ben Heck is pretty much a legend around here and he definitely earned it.
Phoenix @ Jun 5th 2008 5:53PM
Nice! Looks like a learning curve and a half, but for those who've never been able to do anything else... DAMN taht guy is clever
Edward @ Jun 5th 2008 6:16PM
It doubles as a flask too!
Maximun2k10 @ Jun 5th 2008 8:20PM
Ohh my god, so many stupids...
All you retards... wanna help kids and veterans... donate money to the hospitals, don't came here talk shit...
I just said, 129.00 its a lot of money... i understand, is a cool controller, and i'm pretty sure was a lot of work, i congrats him for making it !
But dont came here brag about sick kids, i pretty sure in the end, nobody here buy the controller or donate shit, so shut up...
buttabean @ Jun 6th 2008 9:47AM
You know I was going to say the same thing. I can only use one arm and 129 bucks for a controller is very expensive. They don't tell you how much of it goes to charity. They just do that so $129 doesn't look as bad lol. Will I be buying one no not at this time. I'd like to see what reviews say about it. After that will see but i'd have a hardtime coughing that much up, Majority of people who are handicap are on fixed income aswell since they can't work. Not saying that someone who has only one arm functional can't work but theres other issues that come along with someone aswell for instance I have a spinal cord injury on top of that.
Nick Darveniza @ Jun 6th 2008 2:48AM
Now I can eat my cereal somewhat less messily
I Cook on My Notebook @ Jun 6th 2008 11:36AM
This tell me that I can play a four player game all alone, even a five player game, if possible, by using my..... never mind. Using my Toes, Fingers, and Hair.
Todd @ Jun 9th 2008 4:41PM
i tried ordering one to use to box my second comp, customer service was accusing me of using a stolen credit card. so if you don't live in the uk, don't bother.
