Lian Li replacement Xbox 360 case said to be "just weeks away"
It's definitely not for everyone, but if you're looking for something decidedly larger and less flashy than the usual Xbox 360 replacement case, it looks like you'll soon be able to get your fix courtesy of case-maker Lian Li, which is apparently set to release its Lian Li 360 case in just a few weeks. Among other things, this one promises a quieter operation courtesy of some air cooling and a 120mm fan, and relatively easy access to the internal components, although that of course does come at the expense of your warranty. No word on a price just yet, but Lian Li is apparently at least working to keep costs down, opting simply for aluminum side panels and standard screws instead of the more expensive thumbscrews it had originally planned.

A current owner of lian li case for over 5 years. Durable and simplistic. I would go for this if I had a Xbox360. Wonder that the price range will be?
What will also be great if there was some way for there to be a packaged IDE /SATA controller to mount multiples drive for the Xbox360 to recognize.
"Simplistic" is not a fancy way of saying "simple." Simplistic refers to an explanation that has been oversimplified by ignoring complexities or complications.
I own a Lian Li case and am very happy with it. I would say it is durable and has a minimalist design.
Where the hell would that fit on my entertainment center?
It's your new TV stand
Because I'm sure that thumbscrews would send it's price rocketing into the stratosphere…
I was about to say that. I purchased a $40 case from some no-name company (mind you no powersupply included.. Though this Lian-Li case won't either) and it came with thumb screws. At most they'll only need to include 3-4.. I don't see the big deal
Thumbscrew are only useful if you're going to be changing stuff on a reasonably regular basis, like tinkering with PCs. I doubt you'd be tinkering with your 360 much once you have transplanted it into a hunk of aluminium. Knowing Lian Li they've probably ditched the thumbscrews because they were unnecessary or unergonomic, no because of price.
Yes, because swapping a hard drive and completely transplanting the internals of a consumer electronic into a third party solution are exactly the same thing.

side mounted display maybe?
ill buy anything that can make my 360 more quiet.
Well if you go to your local hardware store and buy a "Hammer", it should make the Xbox 360 mostly silent.
GET LIQUID!!

This would look very nice next to my V1000B
i got a lian li case. cost me $100 i wouldn't say it's well worth it. but i haven't had any complaints
Man...Lian-Li makes some quality stuff. I have a case I used for a gaming rig. It was the nicest case I had ever used.
But man...the warranty thing is a gamble. You could swap out your innards, but there's no guarantee that the 360 guts won't shit the bed.
C'mon Microsoft, drop a new form factor....and the price as well.
@DWELL,
So nice, you said it twice? :P
@Ha,
That would be more of an argument against Microsoft's proprietary hard drives for the XBox, not actually changing the entire case to cool it off. If you said something about the PS3's cooling mechanisms, then you'd have something there.
Still pretty stupid until Microsoft do something about the DVD drive noise. I would be able to live with the fan noise if there wasn't that thing whirring away like a hurricane
I agree. I keep hearing people whine about the fan noise, but when there's no DVD in my Xbox 360, it's pretty damn quiet. Granted, I have a newer model with a Falcon, but still, I don't believe or a second that the cooling is the cause of the noise. It's that DVD drive.
If they can come up with a way to swap out the DVD drive for a quieter one, or to write the DVD contents onto a hard drive (legally), then we'd have something. Until then, the 360 noise will continue.
I made my xbox quieter by using rubber garments on the mounts of the hard drive and using dynamat around it. I replaced the fan as well. I then painted the case a nice metallic blue and black on the air vents on the top and bottom and the hard drive case blue. It looks nice and is quieter.
Edit: i used the rubber on the dvd drive...so it doesn't vibrate as much...
This whole assemblage looks like something out of the engine room in the original Star Trek...
If that case looks like original Star TREK it would still be popular in 30+ years from now.
While I love my 360, there would be no need for cases like this which "improve airflow and reduce noise", if Microsoft had done their job properly when designing it.
If this case allowed you to:
1) somehow internalise the psu,
2) add extra ports on the back rather than just the ones already on the 360,
I would be interested though.
I just don't understand who is going to buy this thing. Knowing Lian Li it's going to be incredibly expensive, it makes your 360 larger, and voids your warranty.
any chance this would also allow you to swap in a blu-ray drive?
Yes and Steve Ballmer will personally assist you.
thanks smart @ss, didn't know ballmer knew how to program now too, got his number so i can give him a call?
You need programming skills to install a blu ray drive.
Damn the one in my computer must not be working because I have no programming skills and I put it in myself.
@Kaiser look at the timestamps
engadget messes up sometimes. But i agree with dwelll how do you figure you can compare the two?
Nice one trying to take a cheap shot at the 360
backfire much?
What's wrong with the case it came in???
Im Buying it for my Elite
Does it have a 120MM RROD on the front ?
The things people will spend money on.
@JJV
DWells55 was responding sarcasticly to Ha's post... he's saying that Ha can't compare the two, because they're not the same...
better luck next time JJV..
it appears there is a door in front of the dvd drive, hopefully that will quiet it up a little bit. i'd throw some sound dampening material in there too.
i took another route, put the xbox in my closet and installed a bathroom fan in there to vent the heat
I hope Lian-Li make and Thermalright make PS3 versions of their stuff. I really want Blu-ray and MGS4. The 360 doesn't have any exclusives I want, but this is awesome.
the moment you even attempt to fit this, your 3yr RROD warranty disappears, something every XBox owner pretty much needs these days...
Wow. Thats really stupid.
Yeah, and upgrading the HDD on the 360 is easy as well, it also does not violate your warranty.
Thanks for trying.
I'm having so much fun with my Wii, I would never have time to perform a case "upgrade."
My 360's case is never above 84 degrees.why would I need that ugly POS for?....
besides, no place to put a decalgirl faceplate skin....Fail..
uh.. console gaming is more popular than ever. its almost reached the point of being socially acceptable, unlike playing WoW in your moms basement on the pc..
Console gaming is dead!! Dead. DEAD. DEAD!!
Consoles have become PC's (computers). I've been saying this for how long, now? Stop futzing around and start selling parts individually. I'm looking at you, Microsoft.
the case fans aren't the problem. the rocket jet-like DVD ROM is the problem.
Do thumbscrews really cost that much..?
Lian Li ROCKS! Their cases are the best you can buy. I use them on all my builds.
Too expensive though...
I figure I should explain why I am absolutely going to be buying this case as soon as it's available, since it seems like such a bad idea to most people.
I have 2 360s. I bought a falcon elite after sending my launch premium back to microsoft for the 3rd time so I would at least have an operational unit at all times. I'd love to put currently-working premium in a nice case with some good cooling, especially if it can make the ridiculously loud dvd-rom quieter. I don't care about the warranty at this point because all they are going to do is send me another POS refurb if it breaks again. I'd rather just by a core to replace it, and if I can put it in a nice case with quieter fans and some sound deadening on the dvd-rom that's great.
