As we inch towards the towering precipice of WWDC 2008, rumors swirling around Apple's next iteration of the iPhone are being deposited onto the interblogs at an alarming rate. The latest set comes in three distinct flavors, the first of which recalls an
earlier story that telcos would be offering subsidies for long-term contract signers. According to separate sources, Spain's Telefonica and the UK's O2 would offer the 3G iPhone at discounted rates (as low as €100) for those willing to put pen to paper, while some are claiming that O2 might also offer a "free" upgrade to the new phone for existing users. In other pot-stirring news, iDealsChina is reporting that the phone will suddenly be 2.0mm shorter and 0.5mm thinner than previously spec'd by Griffin in its
new casing molds, thus causing all kinds of trouble for the accessory-maker... and people with big hands. Finally, we can safely report that AT&T has run out of stock of the device online (finally
joining Apple). The site claims it's a "temporary" situation -- one which we suspect will be rectified by the appearance of a new model. Time to get in
that line?

No User Replaceable Battery: Go here (http://www.mophie.com/collections/batteries) or shut-up.
No Copy and Paste: Bummer.
No MMS: Just use e-mail, idiot, or wait for someone to write a MMS app.
No 3G: Just wait 5 days, idiot.
No Third Party Apps: Just wait 5 days, idiot.
No Push E-mail: See above.
Too Expensive: Get a job.
Locked to AT&T: So? Unlock it.
I don't want to unlock it: Then don't unlock it.
But I hate AT&T: So? I hate Sprint.
I'm going to Sprint: Good bye.
Sprint sucks too: Verizon?
Verizon doesn't have the iPhone: Who's fault is that?
Apple should unlock the iPhone: Apple should give me a million dollars and a pony.
I like Windows Mobile better: So? Buy a fucking phone with Windows Mobile.
I like Symbian: So? Buy a fucking Symbian phone.
Apple didn't invent multi-touch, you know: So that makes the iPhone terrible because...?
I want a phone with a keypad: So? Buy a fucking phone with a keypad.
I hate Steve Jobs: So? I hate Steve Ballmer.
Apple users are smug: This, of course, is the best excuse ever created to NOT buy a device you really, really want (that's called sarcasm, idiot).

HAHAHAHAHA! Nice...
The complaints take up less space than this, clak.
And your responses are basically no better than what they are responding to.
Wait, you forgot to quote a wisdom in bettwen two signs!
Im going to be looking for a new phone, and the iphone could fit the bill, but some of your answers (to your own questions) are a little worrying... (and people are not idiots for asking despite what you think!)
--- No MMS
Hmmm.. whilst not a deal breaker, every single phone in the UK allows me to take a picture, and send it to anyone else with a mobile phone using MMS. Its an instinct and social thing, and you only use it when you want someone to get that picture straight away.
Often... having them view it later by email just isnt the same.
MMS should be there by default. Your answer (wait until someone else builds an app.. that I may have to pay for, or email) is a cop-out. Just put your hand up.. 'current iPhone sucks' if you want this.
--- No Copy and Paste
Another travesty if typing an email and you need this function. My relatively ancient Nokia allows for this in limited use, but its better than nothing.
And not mentioned on your list... so Im assuming the iphone has them (as they are deal breakers to be honest)
--- Speakerphone for voice calls THAT CAN BE MUTED if required during the call ?
--- Ability to send an SMS to multiple people at the same time and receive delivery reports
--- Ability of the Camera to actually focus rather than fixed focus like some other mobile phone cameras, preferably with some kind of lighting / flash assist.
--- Ability to lock the phone with a PIN so that if someone picks it up (like your wife) she wont be able to access it
--- Has an Alarm clock built in for when traveling.
As simple as the above sounds... these are functions I use all the time on my old phone. If the iphone mark II has them all, than fantastic... otherwise.. NO DEAL.
Wow, clak is at it again, reelin' in the same ol' suckas. J/k. Don't mind me! =)
clak
there's no need to create such a list, it's not a perfect phone, that's all you need to remember.
--- Speakerphone for voice calls THAT CAN BE MUTED if required during the call ? Yes
--- Ability to send an SMS to multiple people at the same time and receive delivery reports Yes
--- Ability of the Camera to actually focus rather than fixed focus like some other mobile phone cameras, preferably with some kind of lighting / flash assist. No. Buy a camera. Seriously, lighting and focus... buy a camera.
--- Ability to lock the phone with a PIN so that if someone picks it up (like your wife) she wont be able to access it Yes. But wouldn't your wife want the PIN anyways?
--- Has an Alarm clock built in for when traveling. Yes.
your joke just proved copy past FTW.
@clak :
Do you forget a decent camera , one-hand usage and the volume (even with "hack")/signal quality, after all it is a *cellphone*, however i don't known to put the blame on iphone or at&t on this aspect, and not forget the size (it's slim but height).
Iphone is cool but not so cool, even a crappy Motorola can kickass Iphone on this "minor" details.
@Sandman:
- MMS
-- I agree. Not everyone has email on their phone and they do have work arounds, but its not as simple and easy. True someone may write a reasonable MMS program, but Apple really should add this in. I mean, its not like its rocket science. They left it out on purpose to force people to use e-mail. and the phone number @ the wireless carrier.com crap is just that, crap. Sure I can send a message to them, but not all networks support email from a phone and what about the mass MMS?
- Ability to send an SMS to multiple simultaneous recipients and receive delivery confirmations.
-- iPhone already has that, sans the delivery confirmation. Delivery confirmations don't always work either. From AT&T phone to AT&T phone, maybe 50% of the time. From other networks, its a crap shoot at best. I had a Moto Q once on Verizon and that had perfect delivery confirmations from within Verizon and even to AT&T - but any other network you wouldn't receive them. As far as the delivery confirmations from a mass SMS, your just asking for trouble and I mean hard lock the phone you need to re-move the battery to reboot trouble.
- Auto focus & flash
-- You may actually see that with the 2nd Gen iPhone. But it is a phone after all. If you want to be Ansel Adams, get a real camera.
- Phone Lock
-- Current iPhone already has that. By the way, why _don't_ you want your wife looking at your phone?
- Alarm clock, timer, stopwatch, alarms
-- Current iPhone already has that.
Haha, best FAQ I've read in a while. Even though it's a joke, I actually like and agree with a lot of the answers.
Thank you, clak, for posting this annoying article again.
Because I'm bored, I think i'll go down the line and disprove (or rather improve without berating) those one by one (the ones that aren't editorial). I especially love the constant use of the word "idiot" despite mac users not being smug.
I realize that you are obviously on the defending end. Keep in mind that I'm trying to take a completely unbiased approach to this whole straw-man argument.
User replaceable battery: Hmmmmmm.... maybe one that isn't twice the thickness of the iphone itself? And one that is internal? Heck anyone can buy an external battery pack for their phone.
No copy/ paste: inexcusable. The iphone certainly has the capacity. It was simply a software design oversight. Easily fixed, but kinda annoying.
No mms: already doing the same on my windows mobile phone. I agree. Deal with it. And this way, you can send pictures to people who aren't on your same network. I also can't believe you didn't insert no video recording capabilities. Just saying, that's another complaint.
No 3G: Wait five days for MAYBE something to come out. Either way, if you're in the market for a smart phone, you might as well wait. It's not like it could hurt, and the iphone can finally be on the same hardware playing field as everyone else.
No 3rd party apps/ no push email: I agree with this, except for the liberal use of the word "idiot"
Too expensive: Most people have a job. However, most people are also constrained by a little thing called a budget. Also, food/clothing/house or car payments might be more important to some people than having a new phone (Crazy! I know!)
For the next few that have to do with someone who evidently doesn't like any cell phone company in existence, if you buy an iPhone from Apple, iTunes will not let you sync until you buy service from AT&T. I'm not sure if unlocking the iPhone will allow you to do this, but either way, you have a very expensive paperweight until you sign your life away to AT&T for much more than you would any other company. Even the most expensive plan for the iPhone isn't unlimited, whereas the unlimited plan for someone like Sprint is only $100. That's it. Done.
Apple should unlock the iPhone: Why? They make a lot of money off of their partnership with AT&T. However, most other smart phone companies also sell unlocked versions of most of their handsets for slightly more. I've seen the new section of unlocked cell phones at best buy. Very nice selection.
I like Windows Mobile/ Symbian better: Fine. That's called freedom of choice. I personally have a Windows Mobile phone and i can safely make this analogy, having played with both operating systems. The iPhone's interface is like having a soft, cuddly kitten hug your face. The Windows Mobile interface is like having one of those huge control surfaces on the Enterprise. With an attitude. If you know what you're doing, you will be impressed with the ease of use and ability of the operating system. If you don't, prepare for it to stick its tongue out at you and blow raspberries.
Apple didn't invent multitouch: Only smartypants know it alls would say something like that. That's the equivalent to saying, you know Apple didn't invent MP3 technology, so they have no right using it.
I want a phone with a keypad: Again, freedom of choice. If that is something integral to what you want in a phone, then choose the phone with a keypad. Still, Apple has done a pretty good job determining how to prevent some of the problems some users would have with typing on a keyboard on a screen with no tactile feedback.
I hate Steve Jobs: Wow. The question asker hates a man, so he won't buy a phone from the company that he owns. That's called relying on feelings a wee bit too much.
Mac users are smug: I'm guessing that you, clack, own an iPhone. You claim that mac users aren't smug, and yet you cuss and call people idiots throughout the entire article.
I await your other-worldly response.
I'd pay good money to see a fred / clak cage fight.
Man, clak. Thanks. I'm pretty sure you wanted to cause all of this commotion, otherwise you would've posted something at the end of your comment about how it was a joke. or /sarcasm.... or something. Anything.
My points still stand, however.
Jesus, Mike10010100, sarcasm was my second to last word. And by the way, I don't care about any of your points. I won't read it. Someone could make a phone that paid me every time I made a call and I would still buy an iPhone.
We had gay burglars the other night. They broke in and rearranged the furniture—Robin Williams
"Apple users are smug: This, of course, is the best excuse ever created to NOT buy a device you really, really want (that's called sarcasm, idiot)."
Anyone with rudimentary comprehension skills could see that the word sarcasm only refers to the last point in the long line of complaints.
You are obviously a mac fanboy. This is proved by the fact that you have repeatedly said that you will not listen to anyone else and that you would buy the iPhone even if there were better phones out there.
Smug fanboy. Use logic. If for nothing else, just read the ideas of other people to get a feel for how they think. You are very narrow minded.
Notice that I have accomplished the same thing that you have without calling anyone an idiot or cussing.
clack
I hope you follow your rule there when commenting on gadgets other than apple. According to your rule you should have no comments other than today's weather.
@Mike10010100
Oh, nooooooooo! You called me a FANBOY. How ever will I recover from such an insult, especially since I refer to myself as a fanboy at least once a day.
I am an Apple Fanboy, okay? I am also smug, elitist, arrogant, immature, contradictory, self-absorbed, trollish (occasionally) and yes, I think I'm better than most Windows users, even though I boot XP every now and then so that I can play Counter-Strike: Source.
Happy now? I've taken care of all of the insults for you.
I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. I don't even know you, and I hate your guts. I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and nobody else but you—Silky Johnson, Player Haters Ball, Chappelle's Show, 2003
Thanks! That saves a whole lot of time!
However, you're missing the point.
Continuing to make fun of other people's opinions while you yourself do not seem to be willing to change is the equivalent to putting a mirror in front of a male beta fish.
*bonk bonk bonk*
Arrogance will get you nowhere. It merely shows your stupidity further. Better to keep your mouth shut and have people wonder if you are dumb than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.
Be kind to others, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Change? Why would I want to change? I like being an asshole. And what would I change to? Someone who uses *gasp* Windows? I've already pointed out that I use XP occasionally. It doesn't change the fact that Windows is shit, but hell, even shit has good uses. For instance, shit is a good fertilizer, right?
Zune continues its spectacular ride to the top. Oh wait, the chart's upside down—Fake Steve Jobs
Yes, it's alright to be an asshole when you're correct in your opinions, but being an asshole while being wrong, and not being willing to change makes your life a lesson in futility.
Have fun Sisyphus.
Oh, same to you, Helen of Troy.
I didn't ask to see you. I don't mind if you don't like my manners, I don't like them myself. They are pretty bad. I grieve over them on long winter evenings—Philip Marlowe, The Big Sleep
It's just so funny to see people like you try to push their opinions, when all they do is make people hate them more. If people are going to disregard your opinions because you berate them, what's the point of having opinions at all?
Keep talking, Medusa. Your momma is a Minotaur.
Things like escalated to the point where, you know, my man got too familiar and I ended up having to whip his ass man, you know, cause you know, he would step across the line. Habitually. He's a habitual line stepper—Charlie Murphy, True Hollywood Stories, Chappelle's Show, 2004
Oh boy, iPhone 3G is already bringing the love, from BOTH sides of the aisle.
I can't wait for WWDC, if nothing else, just to read epic tirades like this. It warms me like the rising sun does the morning frost.
Pricing will dictate whether or not I upgrade right away. I'm for the most part happy with my current iPhone so I don't see the need to rush to upgrade. Also, I want to let everyone else feel it out a bit before I jump off a cliff. What if it sucks?
same here the current gen iphone has served well but if they have an affordable upgrade i will def. purchase it.

I can't wait for the 3G iPhone pleaseeeeee be available on Orange UK this time!!!
You should be so lucky and why would you want to stick with the terrible customer service that seems to be the orange norm?I switch from them to O2 just because of that.
Apple make phones?
Really?
you are in what...2006???
While at the Apple Store today here in Bluewater I was told that them, O2, AND Carphone Warehouse were sold out of iPhones.
Seems like the price drop on the 8Gb drove sales, and when those dried up, people just got the 16Gb.
O2 don't use Euros in the UK. What's the price in Sterling? It had better be £0 like all the other phones otherwise it will just be a flop.... Again.
Jeez, read the actual article - it says £100.
Read it again, dumb shit. Does it look like £100 to you?
€99 = £99
$100 = €2
;)
No, one Euro is NOT equal to one Pound. Besides, they don't just convert the prices. Look at the iPhone for an example, in the US it was $399 (£200) Yet over here they put it up to £279 ($560).
The change in size is on purpose.
This will allow Apple to get a leg up on accessories and force anyone upgrading to buy all new ones. They will also have a short lived monopoly over other accessory makers.
From a person who loves capitalism, good job Apple.
Or it could just be that a new case design suits the new internal parts better than the current design does. Nah, that would be too simple of an explanation.
Things I'm almost too embarassed to admit:
- I'm moving my lunch back to 1pm Monday to follow keynote coverage from home
- I'll wait outside an AT&T store on launch day (hopefully 6/16 based on the AT&T No vacay memo) to get one asap.
- If there is a rebate, I'd pay up to $400 post-rebate for a 32GB iPhone, not to mention my Sprint cancellation fee.
and lastly,
- Hard as I tried, I got caught up in the hype
One question, though:
- Will there be a video feed of the keynote? Or is live-blogging content the best we're gonna get?
hasn't been vid feed for a looong time, liveblog's your best option, likely.
video posted later. Like all the WWDCs before it.
Liveblogging is the best we're going to get. I'd suggest Macrumours for speed, Engadget for the great photos.
If Engadget learn they could provide a better experience and lower bandwidth drain by using AJAX, it would be a decent way of getting the info. But then, it'd be cool to travel faster than light or divide by zero.

He is talking about a Live video feed. Some of you new people probably don't remember those. I believe the last one was in 2003, quite sad actually. I really wish they would bring it back. Or even better, Apple should just launch a Cable channel. It could be like a movie channel, but show special events. "Apple TV" Oh wait, Damn.
For all the people who are going to visit Engadget in the coming week, note the following:
You are going to experience a rush of nonstop news and articles about the iPhone/Apple products, it is going to be in huge loads and will carry with it even bigger amounts of comments. My advice is: if you are interested in rumors or just want to know what is going to happen with the iPhone/Apple products keep visiting Engadget every 5 minutes, if you hate Apple and/or iPhone, then leave the comment walls empty off your hate/opinion/madness about how Apple's/iPhone's name is all over the site.
Go fishing, maybe visit some other websites or just clean your desktop for the coming week.
Yours truly,
A guy who will watch and read Engadget even if it had Apple news all over the first page. (interested)
What do you mean, "this week"?
Can you please suggest other sites that won't over indulge on Apple non-news? (for real)
@ happy_penguin: I mean this week as in seven days starting today. :)
@ axemt: GameTrailers, IMDB, Google Maps. :p You know what? Just go fishing.
you know what...it'll be a great time for all of us...regardless a fanboy or an apple-hater
fanboyz will be drooling over the products apple will be launching while haters will be busy pointing out things apple should have done...it will be a big fight...
just relax and enjoy the show...
@ Saad Rabia
That's just sad.
It's like the Britney Spears/Paris Hilton/Lindsey Lohan/ > insert worthless stuff here < of the tech world as I see nowadays.
@ axemt: Actually it's only sad if you look at it from a bad side, to be honest, iPhone is one of the best handheld devices in the world, it isn't "the" best, but really worth watching especially if the mistakes are being fixed. And us, as tech lovers, we should appreciate news, rumors, and discussions on tech stuff even if it was sometimes over done. I was pissed to see many news about the iPhone a couple weeks ago (So I worked on some projects in my free time), but now, I'm fully aware of the situation and would not mind at all waking everyday and reading something about the iPhone for the next coming week.
We are selective by nature, but at some points we should give things a chance, and this week it is MY chance for the iPhone. :)
@ Saad Rabia
Why should we expect this? Why shouldn't the general readership of this site not expect what we see now, which are a variety of stories for m all over the tech world?
If Engadget can pull these stories out now, what's keeping them from doing it when this device is presented? There are many people that write for this site. All of them don't have to be turning out Apple stuff.
There is no reason to turn this site over to Apple PR and advertising just because.
Is this site here to report news or to push a certian companies product several times during the year?
@ Saad Rabia
I think the iPhone is a nice product but the amount of non-news it's just tiresome after a while.
The same way I don't care about XBox but don't mind reading from time to time about updates, advances and whatnot to keep me informed on what's out there. If the site were to start posting 5 post a day about every little banal/trivil rumor about say item I would be put off.
@ fred
I understand the site needs to pay their bills and nowadays there is no better way than to start the Apple/MS wars when news are slow to keep those hits coming. The same way TV news make everything grander than it usually is.
Sorry about my attempt at humor up there. It might have helped if I had quoted correctly. Also, something may have been lost in the cultural divide. :D
Realistically, if it is announced on Monday, what would be the ETA for a web order?
Phones should be hitting the AT&T stores by the end of the month. I have a dear friend who's an AT&T store mgr and I am in line for the first one there.
Its very likely that the griffin molds are intentionally larger than the product. It is not unheard of for freshly molded plastic to shrink when it cools.
O2 have exclusivity on iphone in the uk for a few years
it'll never be on orange
not for a few years any way
"Can you please suggest other sites that won't over indulge on Apple non-news? (for real)"
None that I can think of. The people who truly love technology (the ones who love it enough to make a living out of writing about it) also love Apple, or at least writing about Apple. Coincidence? Probably not.
Oh, and if you think it's only about pleasing advertisers, you are wrong. It is a factor though.
In the US.
This is great for UK customers, no doubt. But I still hope you as a Danish viking can walk into the Apple Store in London and buy the new iPhone for £329 and unlock it by yourself.
In what ways is this great for UK customers?
Pay-as-you-go? Free iPhone replacement? You name it ;)
I wish people would stop complaining
....
It drives me insane
....
What Apple do, normally turns out all right, they could sell a toilet and people would still buy it
....
It's a love factor!
I have a question for the complainers that don't approve of these iPhone articles: Do you at least contribute tips to other newsworthy gadgets, or do you just stop in every now and then and hope that they have something you'd care about? I only ask because if I didn't like what I was reading, I'd at least look around and check out my favorite brands to see if they have anything that's worth taking a look at and sending a tip to the editors. Bitching and moaning in the comments board simply means another hit in the article you didn't approve of. Way to make a difference.
Wait, what's an iPhone?
Me: iPhone was introduced at MacWorld 2007.
You: Yeaah I know I was just kidding
Me: Yeaah I know I was kidding too.
You: Seriously that's mean, I actually thought you were real.
Me: Sorry dude, sorry.
You: Heey I was just kidding
Me: Heey now you're mean.
An object of importance to several "fanboys" belonging to various companies who either praise the object, or severely hate it.
So Apple's bringing 3G and GPS to the iPhone?
Ah the features of yesteryear...
0,5mm thick?! :-D Probably they meant 5mm, not 0,50...
Am I the only one to spot this?!
yeah, half a millimetre is quite thin for the casing. but I guess it's there to protect against scratches and not for bullet proofing... although my griffin casing's clear plastic case is quite thick.
No it's 0.5mm THINNER =p
I'm waiting to see how this I'll turn out. It's either this or the n-96. Right now I'm more biased towards this. I don't really care about the camera. As long as I can take a shot that's not in VGA, I'm happy
Any word on what the Storage space is gonna be?
I think the size dimensions are rather the casing - the mould would obviously be bigger than the phone itself. So the sizes should be correct, both from Griffin and "Insider sources", just depends on what you're looking for - the case size or the phone size.
The new iphone will have 3G, ridiculous GPS, and will be $199 with a 3 year contract for a 16GB, $299 w/ contract for 32GB.
Slimmer design, but non-curvy. A black back (non-plastic).
Did anyone think that Griffin has the dimensions right and that they didn't make their case the same size as the new iPhone so that so it would be possible to put the phone into the case?
"Job-sonian" disinformation program is in full tilt boogie! T-minus 4 days and counting.
makes sense that the guy who wants to be able to send mass booty texts doesn't want his wife looking at his phone
