World's largest 3D display revealed in 4D spacetime
Ooo, ahhh, you feeling that 3D display on your 2D panel? You should, it's the world's largest 3D LCD panel from VMJ measuring in at 65-inches. The stereoscopic panel developed with support from VisuMotion features a 1920 x 1080 resolution, 6-ms refresh, 120-degree viewing angle, and DVI and RGB inputs. Best of all, no goofy 3D glasses of any type are required thanks to the incorporation of Sharp's Parallax Barrier viewing technology. Priced at ¥3.15 million (about $30k) when it starts advertising CosaNostra Pizza around Mr. Lee's Greater Hong Kong.

I saw a 3D LCD panel in a supermarket in france about 3 years ago. It was advertising juice. I'm sure it wasn't HD, but other than that it seems pretty similar to this one. It looked pretty cool. Unfortunately the misses didn't find it so interesting, so I didn't spend much time prodding it.
I wonder why it's taken so long to make this one?

Back when I was a little kid, I used to get these trading cards that were coated in a sheet of plastic of some kind. The image seemed to be embedded in the plastic. As you tilted the card from side to side, you could see an action scene of whatever was on the card in different frames as the angle changed. I noticed though, that if I turned the card sideways, and only tilt the card half way to the new picture, I could see both pictures at the same time. One in each eye. I'm thinking that this is that exact same cheap-o technology being applied to LCD screens.

"lenticular" is the technical term
neonenergy @ Jun 5th 2008 8:58AM
In trading cards, the different pictures are due to the refraction due to the plastic, while a parallax barrier seems to use lots of tiny slots so that only some pixels can be seen at certain angles. cool stuff
maty @ Jun 5th 2008 6:16AM
Do want!! So what if there's barely any 3D material to display through that? I'll still take one!
maty @ Jun 5th 2008 6:18AM
Its is, buts not cheap. You need to sit in a predefined spot (as like you said, one eye sees a different image). But still, its come a long way and its still impressive. Beats seeing it in red and green only through some cheap glasses.
Kurian @ Jun 5th 2008 7:56AM
Holy crap the image looks so much more realistic than my monitor! Its almost like its coming out of the screen!
serge @ Jun 5th 2008 8:16AM
looove the snow crash reference.
if you havn't read it, do it. Do it now.
Oh, and Steven Ericson's Malazan Book of the Fallen
moneill @ Jun 5th 2008 8:25AM
second that
DoctaDJones @ Jun 5th 2008 9:08AM
Wow, I completely missed that reference.
I haven't read the book since I got it free with my copy of Spectre VR I bought for my Quadra 650 back in the day. Now I'm going to have to add it to my summer reading list.
tekdemon @ Jun 6th 2008 7:07AM
I'll add a bump to snow crash...great book, and since new readers are reading it in 2008 it'll be that much more impressive since you'll realize that most of the stuff in the book is more or less already possible now (although to be fair the guys who made Second Life mostly did it because they read snow crash, so it's kind of self fulfilling)
CyberQuaff @ Jun 5th 2008 8:30AM
Looks like we are on google's gmail advert today! and Yes, Snow Crash is amazing. Running for Steven Ericson's Malazan Book of the Fallen now. I feel that we do need some new technology in the
visual department, 2D sucks. Move on.
Owen @ Jun 5th 2008 8:36AM
The second I saw that, my heart leapt, and my wallet cringed.
Armoured @ Jun 5th 2008 8:37AM
This is kinda useless cause it only works best when seated in front.
This will work well with monitors, cause your always sitting in front and facing your monitor directly. Will be awesome for games.
Jim @ Jun 5th 2008 10:11AM
Yeah, 'Cuz I sit behind my TV when I watch it!
120 degrees is pretty impressive. Try sitting in front of a rear-projection tv or an older LCD screen.
:P
7egend @ Jun 5th 2008 8:42AM
I think this cause for a demo of the matrix ran on this thing where the bullet dodging scene is used... I want to see slow motion projectiles coming out of this secure.... now implement smell-o-vision into this so I can smell the gun powder.... then I will be in movie heaven.
not to mention this will take porn viewing to an entirely different plane....mmm....
fanthem @ Jun 5th 2008 7:38PM
Uh, not sure I want to smell everything in porn. What if they release a silent but deadly.
Chris @ Jun 5th 2008 9:20AM
Dugg for the Snow Crash reference!
Backwards People @ Jun 5th 2008 9:36AM
Digg is horrible. This is not digg.
Only emo's like digg. XD
cybereality @ Jun 5th 2008 11:24AM
Wow, that is one serious beast of a 3d monitor. However, I'll be the dude that wears the goofy glasses and saves about $29k. It might look nerdy, but nothing screams "cool" like an extra $29k hanging out your pocket!
Guys, there are already 3d monitors on the market for cheap (under $600):

Yeah, you have to wear glasses, but come on. Its 3D!!!!!
James Cameron @ Jun 5th 2008 3:25PM
I really want to see this in person. Watching the 3D display on Youtube just doesn't work.
loosely_coupled @ Jun 5th 2008 7:41PM
Hey guys, you need to remember to use the proper term so people can quickly sort out the crap displays from the next generation ones.
Displays that are 3D WITHOUT the need for glasses are called AUTOSTEREOSCOPIC!
Akos3D @ Jun 6th 2008 8:27AM
Ok, this is cool, but barrier solution is not really the best way to make 3D.
How about the HoloVizio guys, who are producing a 72 inch stuff with jump-less 3D view. So that means you stand in front of it and simply watch the 3D.
The video looks great!
