Philips debuts 22-inch auto-stereoscopic 3D monitor
Philips only just took the wraps off its 52-inch 3D display, but it looks like it's not stopping there, as it's now also showing off a new 22-inch model for those that prefer something a little more desk-friendly. This one boasts the same WOWvx "2D-plus-Depth" technology that its larger counterpart uses, but takes the resolution down to 1680 x 1050, and the contrast and brightness down to 1,000:1 and 300cd/m2, with a 5ms response time rounding out the basic specs. No word on the port situation just yet, nor is there any word of a price, but you can apparently look for this one to be available commercially sometime in the fourth quarter of this year.

god, the last thing i want jumping out of my screen is a group of drunk fanatic gamblers.
Darkroom @ Jun 6th 2008 5:38PM
yes, you got a problem with that you fucking sheltered 12 year old nazi.
Ellianth @ Jun 6th 2008 6:55PM
Sweet, let's hook up dude! :P.
Why wouldn't you want drunk gamblers? They'd be so loose with their money, you could make a small fortune off them.
nikola @ Jun 6th 2008 9:32PM
no, I was just wondering what your fingers smelled like
Kaiser-Machead @ Jun 6th 2008 2:32PM
I can imagine people making mad grabs at the screen when watching porno.
"OMG!" *swipes at LCD*
*sobs*
nikola @ Jun 6th 2008 2:44PM
so....can you thrust your thingy into the 3d image and have it respond by bouncing back on it?
???
Juice @ Jun 6th 2008 3:41PM
That's been possible since the CRT. Where have you been?
Tim @ Jun 6th 2008 2:45PM
What's with all the 3D stuff as of late? I don't see any practical use for it other than games.
404 @ Jun 6th 2008 2:49PM
I guess it's just the screen manufacturers trying to drum up some interest. It's not like screen tech moves as fast as processors or graphics cards.
dramamoose @ Jun 6th 2008 2:50PM
Let's see.... 3D modeling, GIS, data management, gaming, movie viewing, CAD, Google Earth, 3D Porn.
I think there are plenty of uses. And many of these applications already support 3D using goggles.
Tim @ Jun 6th 2008 2:51PM
Wow... I didn't know that the tech already existed to all of that.
raging_hamsterx @ Jun 6th 2008 2:50PM
but can it play doom 3D?
Josh Read @ Jun 6th 2008 2:58PM
3D for graphic design! Fonts in 3D would ROCK!
bolezhinkov @ Jun 6th 2008 3:19PM
and music production - making 3d waveform to manipulate a la minority report.
Bakari @ Jun 6th 2008 4:09PM
To both above:
No, sorry, that's lame. I'm a graphic designer and a producer and both of your ideas are under-thought.
Seeing a font rotate in 3D has been done to death already, we don't need a 3D screen driving into the ground anymore. Good design vs. Gimmicks = a win for good design every time.
Waveforms are really not useful in a 3D format. It looks really pretty, but it's definitely not the easiest way to interpret a sound signal. Can you imagine trying to find and select a peak or valley in a three dimensional wave plot? I already lose my place in 2D waveforms trying to isolate samples, God forbid they make it 3D.
In short, this is whole idea is lame. Failure in a shiny box.
boolean22 @ Jun 6th 2008 4:42PM
I'm so with Bakari on this one, altho I've seen what these thingies can do for High Definition Movies (it's like a Mini-IMAX on your living room). As always, the footage should be prepared specifically.
I'm a graphic and motion graphic designer: 3D fonts is LAME in every way. Using a 3D Desktop is lame too... there's no other destination for this stereoscopics than movies and games, sorry.
bolezhinkov @ Jun 6th 2008 5:38PM
sorry we didnt have our development teams contact you.
of course they arent thought out - I thought of the thing I like doing (making music) and applied it to this. feel free to get left behind if something interesting does come out of this.
igotnolegs @ Jun 6th 2008 3:32PM
Ron Paul love gambling.
Ridgecity @ Jun 6th 2008 3:32PM
Trying to impress old hookers by throwing stuff at the crupier isn't my kind of stereoscopic fun...
Juice @ Jun 6th 2008 3:42PM
Dude your avatar is top notch. I always loved how his trainers eyes bulged out like that.
Gilbert Tang @ Jun 7th 2008 5:16AM
Well done.
VampireHunter Z @ Jun 6th 2008 3:39PM
I'm curious to know how this thing works. Has anyone seen this tech in action? I'm guessing the content itself doesn't have to be 3D. They are essentially making "guesses" on how to give a 2D image depth. What about viewing angles? Is the image sharp or does the 3D effect blur edges?
gamedude420 @ Jun 6th 2008 5:26PM
ive seen it in action, its no where near as good a 3d with glasses. this tech is pretty limited the images mostly just shake like. its not the true 3d experience. might as well get a 3d set like samsung or mits they are pretty solid. the new laser tv will have realD hardware just like cinema 3d projectors. (just as good as imax except on a smaller screen 65-73 inches)
loosely_coupled @ Jun 6th 2008 8:03PM
The word you are looking for is Autostereoscopy. There are actually quite a few different methods for generating 3D without the need for glasses.
This PARTICULAR implementation may not necessarily be that good, but many of them are VERY GOOD and even BETTER than what can be achieved with polarized glasses.

Autostereoscopy: now more fun than a colonoscopy

can someone explain why gold digger #1 is missing a tooth?

flying dice
tekdroid @ Jun 7th 2008 9:58AM
It would be nice if they could make LCDs match the colour, refresh rate and viewing angles of a CRT for starters.
solarbuddy @ Jun 7th 2008 10:16AM
Where's the digital cameras to make stereo content to show on these things? I still have my ancient 2.8 Realist and a Sputnik camera I got at a Kiev flea market in '94, but for taking stereo pictures I want something at least as cool as two Elphs glued together. C'mon, camera makers--how hard could it be to slap on a lens and produce single-file stereo jpegs?

WoW, 真是太厲害了...^_^...
