TSA's Millimeter scanners see through clothes, installed at 10 airports
Leave it to the TSA to come up with new ways to check out what you're packing. In this case, those body-scanning machines we've known about for some time are being installed in 10 airports. They are already being used in Los Angeles, Baltimore, Denver, Albuquerque, and New York's JFK. Later this month, the TSA will add the bum-looking devices to major airports in Dallas, Detroit, Las Vegas, and Miami. By bouncing millimeter waves off passengers, the scanners produce a black-and-white image that's detailed enough to see the sweat on someone's back (among other things). The program is aimed at detecting objects such as plastic and ceramic weapons that aren't normally picked up by traditional methods. The technology does have a couple drawbacks, however: it can't see through plastic or rubber materials that resemble skin. Keep that in mind the next time you wear vinyl pants on your next trip to Mars, kids.

I'm quite sure this is a woman.....but I think I see a bulge.
I am sooo glad I'm being protected from plastic and ceramic weapons....there are oh so many of these.
Glocks are all plastic right?!? Save me jesus now.
Just harden the cockpit door man.
i may not be 18, but i swear to god, i will get some viagra and walk through that machine!
i would pee my pants, after a while that is, can't do both at the same time
i can just see the tsa guy spitting his coffee becuase of that!
Maybe the guy in the private room all by himself might like that.
BTW who is watching the guy in this private room making sure he's nut uhm....well at least making sure he's doing the right and just thing.
Glocks aren't all plastic. They still have metal barrels, springs, and ammo. There are some pretty slick plastic knives though. The ceramic ones are too brittle, first time they hit something hard(tray table, briefcase) they will break.
Whats a scooba suit
More ways for the TSA to check out my round nicely shape nipples and sexy a** while I cruise on a biz class - Zone 1 on American Air!!
Everyone better start brushing up on their Newspeak.
Is that what passes for humor these days? Lay off it.
Great, a job for the truly perverted. Airport security.
Damn stereotypes...
Y even get it right though. You really suck.
So, what are they gonna do when I cut a pocket in my skin and slip a carbon fiber knife in there?
All of this is pointless, privacy invading fear mongering. They can't prevent these things, only stop them. They should arm the pilots and stewardesses.
It's an absurd invasion of privacy. I cannot believe the fools that let these things be installed.
Terrorists will most appreciate it when pilots and stewardesses are armed. That way, the question on how to get a weapon on board is solved - there are already weapons on board, all they need to do go grab them. Easy-peasy.
I do agree that the airport security is a bit of a joke but you have to put it in perspective: It's like a bicycle lock. It doesn't prevent the bicycle from getting stolen - but it makes it harder to steal.
The system above seems very expensive for very little benefit. When was a plane last abducted with the help of a plastic or ceramic knife? I don't think knife-based plane hijacking would work at all anymore - if the passengers know that they will be killed, they will resist, and terrorists can't possibly overwhelm all other passengers plus the pilots plus the air marshal armed with just a knife. That only works if people are lead to believe that the hijacking will not lead to their death.
A much more likely reason for introducing this system is to catch people smuggling other stuff, drugs, or pet snakes, or whatever they try to smuggle. Terrorism is just the excuse used to justify the extreme invasion of privacy here. I mean... you want to see me naked just because some other people that I have nothing to do with smuggle drugs? Hell no. I don't even support the so-called war on drugs. Hence, it's terrorism.
And yet you are SO proud of your so called "free" nation.
Yeah, because everyone knows that this has everything to do with the foundation of our nation that we're so proud of. Yes... This airport scanner definitely speaks for every part of our nation that we love including everything from our diversity to our freedom to chose our own life's path, our melting pot culture to our nation's Constitution. Yes, this airport scanner has completely and permanently ruined our nation and we should not be proud of it. Because of this airport scanner, our nation isn't free. Yes... Because everyone knows that freedom relies on the method that our airport scanners use to scan us.
Give me a break.
George W. Bush is not our country. Look at his approval rating. Forming and evangelizing an opinion of the entire foundation of our country based on his subsidized, disapproved-of paranoia is genuine bigotry.
Oh, and by the way, I am completely against this scanner. It's a complete invasion of privacy. I believe the president who allowed this to be commissioned is completely unqualified to run this country that I am so proud of. He has blacked the view of my Conservative political beliefs and he has destroyed our country's world image.
I do, however, have the insight to realize that our country will recover from this plague. I realize that this scanner represents a bad time that we're going through in the United States. A time brought on like a plague by an administration of utterly incapable, misleading self-centered people. I realize that the US is still the US. Because of this and because of all that my country has allowed me to do, I can still be proud of my country.

The good thing is that Bush and his cronies, his paranoia, his crusades, his daddy issues will all be gone soon. It's just horrible to see at this point that the bureaucratic apparatus like the TSA and the state dept. are still chugging along on the isolationist train. That they don't stop. They've just now, with the economy crashing and business travel down by God knows what, introduced new hassles for travelers from "western" countries. I know a lot of business travelers who don't go to the US anymore - seriously! Because of hassles and humiliation at the airports. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
The good thing of course is now that even the blindest, numbest conservatives hate Bush and so there's a chance for Obama to win it. An Obama presidency would cancel out all the Bush crap, and then some. It would not restore lives lost in the President's pet wars, but at least it would start the healing.
I has to go through one of the machines in Moscow. It was no big deal to me as I am comfortable with my penis size. The young lady behind me was quite shocked to see herself virtually naked on the screen though. The biggest areolas I had ever seen! I think it made her more popular on the plane as well.
I think she's wearing a bra - it's just very sheer.
i can tell she's wearing calf-high boots as well! And from this view, she looks like she has a pretty tight stomach. I think she's hot in real life.
Of course, that does look like one big cloud of queef coming out her mid section there...
This is sad and wrong. Why can't so many not see where we're headed? It's nowhere good, I'll tell you that much.
How safe really is this thing, from a health perspective? Have any tests actually been done? I don't want to find out 20 years from now that my ED or cancer was caused by this machine!
Asbestos was supposed to be safe, DDT was supposed to be safe, cell phones were supposed to be safe, PCBs were supposed to be safe, and the list goes on and on.
Denver and Las Vegas, so 3 out of my 4 airport stops next week will have these? Can't wait.
I'm 100% straight, but I've got nothing but respect for this lady's gigantic horse penis.
Give 'em hell, ma'am.
BOOOOBIES!!!!!!
Why do they always use female models in the pics released to the public? What does a guy look like in one of those machines? Can they see your wee or do they just see a bulge? I suppose its full detail and thats why they use female models. I just want to know exactly what they are going to see before I step into one of those machines. Its my body damn it!
Sweet Jesus, that is amazing.
Maybe she had a last minute epiphany about how she could save some $$ on the new plan some carriers have to charge based on passenger weight.
"Hang on... OK, can I get 5 bucks for that? Sorry about the floor."
Fly naked. Problem solved.
im pretty sure they have this at San Francisco too
Wikipedia (and other sites) dealing with privacy laws in the U.S. claim that privacy can not be EXPECTED in public places.
"In general, one cannot have an expectation of privacy in public places, with the exceptions mentioned above. A popular example is denial of privacy for garbage left for collection in a public place." - Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expectation_of_privacy)
An airport is a public facility offering only limited areas of "privacy protected" facilities like a bathroom, phone calls, ect...
"I suspect that most people believe that they have more rights to privacy than the law in the USA recognizes..." - Ronald B. Standler (http://www.rbs2.com/privacy.htm)
Another great point.... Most people boast about their love and greatness of this Nation,. Yet, when asked some of the most simple historical facts of this extremely young country (only over 200 yrs old), most will get it wrong. I wouldn't expect this same subset to spend any extra time finding out their TRUE rights held by the U.S. Constitution and enforced by law if they can't even retain the information gathered in 9th grade U.S. history.

Now with that out of the way... lets move into the gray area shall we? The article mentions that the person's face will be blurred out and essentially unrecognizable by the screener viewing the monitor.
Question: Is privacy invaded if the identity of the individual is completely concealed?
I'm not sure that privacy can be invaded if the individual identity is concealed. So what laws does the individual have to support their claim to invasion of privacy? I don't believe any. But that is coming from a non-law student so take it with a grain of salt.
The other point everyone screaming "PRIVACY VIOLATION" is missing is that you willfully use this scanner or you don't. Much like a restaurant, any facility reserves the right to refuse to do business with anyone. This would of course ultimately include everyone that refused to use this scanner once it becomes common use, will not be allowed to enter the secure area of the airport.
Just what I ALWAYS WANTED, EVERYONE TO SEE MY SAGGY BOOBS AND FAT HIPS Thank you USA
