We had a feeling it was coming any day now, but now we have confirmation that Sling won't be leaving iPhone and iPod touch users in the lurch when it comes to streaming TV to their devices. The bad news is the software they showed us was pre-alpha proof-of-concept, and their whole situation is hamstrung by the fact that Apple hasn't officially accepted them into the developer program yet. So what we've seen is basically an app developed out of bounds for jailbroken devices -- thus it goes without saying that Sling won't be releasing it until they can do so legitimately. But assuming all goes well, they do intend to get it out the door by sometime this fall or winter. No word yet on the Android release. Video of the app in action after the break.
I've never had a problem with Sling Player on Mac OS X. It's always worked perfectly without crashing or any other problems.
Taylor,
That's clearly not the kind of customer support experience we want to provide. If you could, please email me at megazone at slingmedia dot com so that we can look into the case and correct the situation.
Thank you.
This and MMS are the #1 things I wanted for a new iPhone
How about SlingMedia puts out Sling for Blackberry before trying their hand at the iphone? How long has Sling said "coming soon" on their site? 6 months since the press release and nothing for blackberry...
They're not related. We're working with RIM on the Blackberry SlingPlayer Mobile client and development is progressing, but the time frame is not fully within out (Sling's) control. We are very eager to have the Blackberry client out, but we're going to continue developing other platforms in parallel, such as Symbian UIQ (currently in beta) and iPhone.
Clak, just go home. Go home to where ever you came from (probably Gizmodo) because you are not welcome here.
I read somewhere this app will be on display at wwdc, so therefore there are jailbroken iphones on display at wwdc? What are the chances its the new model?
Geez. Orb has been able to push out a reasonably well done iPhone client last month and have been tweaking it since.
I cant figure out what is Slings issues about needing Apples cooperation to get a client out.
I just starting using Orb for the iphone. Works fine. Not sure why everyone is going to wait another 6 months for Sling when Orb has the technology today. Sure, you have to be connected to wifi, but it works great. I watched a movie last night using Orb.
The iphone has been out for a year and sling is just coming out with a pre alpha ?? Perhaps they should hire a couple of high schoolers whom I'm sure could write a program over the weekend and have it up and running by next Monday.
Orb figured it out already.
This will never get on the iphone. Apple patented similar software for the Apple TV and will most likely feature streaming live TV to the iphone and ipod touch.
And I can't wait for it because I will finally buy an Apple TV!
