If you hadn't heard, Apple stopped producing
the original iPhone at around the 6 million mark, clearing out stock worldwide and paving the way for the
iPhone 3G to take the stage and carry the banner without the baggage of an older sibling cluttering up store shelves. This old EDGE unit was slow, GPS-less,
closed to developers and way overpriced, but we still loved it dearly... but seriously folks, one slightly-used iPhone going cheap: $199 OBO.

R.I.P.
For my Scandinavian friends: http://www.teliasonera.com/press/pressreleases/item.page?prs.itemId=360269#
"TeliaSonera and Apple® today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone™ 3G will be available in Denmark (Telia), Finland (Sonera), Norway (NetCom) and Sweden (Telia) on July 11, and in Estonia (EMT), Latvia (LMT), Lithuania (Omnitel) later this summer.
TeliaSonera will begin taking pre-registrations for iPhone 3G soon."
Cool?!
JoeF @ Jun 9th 2008 6:14PM
Does anyone have any idea how they are going to do with upgrading the existing 2.5G users?
I really really want 3G when it comes out, so do I have to start a new contract or like update it?
Obviously won't be any subsidizing or trade-ins since the 2.5 is dead now. sadface(
Danny@HKSweden @ Jun 9th 2008 7:55PM
hello where are you from?
im from sweden... what do you think about the selling plan here in sweden?
i dont want to buy it with contract.. cause i dont call too much.
Rusty Shackleford @ Jun 9th 2008 8:56PM
Knowing that the original iPhone is no longer in stock and will never be manufactured again, let's say my iPhone "broke", that means I get the 3G version right?
I think I'll just keep plugging it and unplugging it from my PC until it breaks, and say it happened on it's own.
It must work. I bricked my PSP on purpose and got the slim version for free, hopefully Apple is as dumb as GameStop.
Trey @ Jun 9th 2008 6:01PM
You may want to throw that on ebay. They are going through the roof at the moment.
matt @ Jun 9th 2008 6:11PM
just got £200 ($400) for mine, moments after the announcement. good bit of business i think, get to keep my dock and headphones aswel. Currently going through thee process of restoring phone to factory settings for its new owner.
wayne @ Jun 9th 2008 6:04PM
WHY?!?!?!?!?
apple is queer and everyone is blowing a load over it. its just new hardware killing the old in the typical cycle. soon 3G will be a piece of shit too.
kevinm @ Jun 9th 2008 6:05PM
Take a look at the newly listed ones. Talk about the price gougers getting screwed, they're getting raped.
kevinm @ Jun 9th 2008 6:07PM
If you want a cheap iPhone, hit up ebay.
chris @ Jun 9th 2008 7:24PM
yep...same here. anyone interested?

I say wait a while. Current models can be unlocked - and if the rumours are true, as seems likely, the 3G iPhone will be activated in-store, which means unlocking will cost you hundreds of dollars/pounds/whatever. FWIW, O2's early cancellation policy involves paying off the entire contract; unlocking that baby isn't financially viable for anyone who's not in the 40% income tax band.
So you still own an *unlockable* phone, capable of all the software features of the new one, and missing only GPS and faster data... There's a chance prices might hold up, after the initial glut of them on eBay. Just a thought.
vdogg89 @ Jun 9th 2008 6:02PM
20 bucks, no more
Richard Lai @ Jun 9th 2008 6:02PM
Well, my iPhone hasn't self-destructed yet, so R.I.P. not-yet.
Richard Lai @ Jun 9th 2008 6:07PM
BTW, Engadget, you guys did extremely well with the leak:

happy_penguin @ Jun 9th 2008 8:49PM
My iPhone is working just fine and I'm going to keep on using it for a while. I would like 3G but I don't need it so I have no plans to buy the new iPhone yet. Why mess with a good thing?
Drew Scott @ Jun 9th 2008 6:03PM
Just in case you missed one of the other 6 stories about the 3G iPhone currently on the front of engadget ;-)
vdogg89 @ Jun 9th 2008 6:10PM
wait what??
bk7 @ Jun 9th 2008 6:25PM
They might be trying for a record.. first the most on one page, then the most consecutive posts! dam damage proof hdds getting in the way!
boss-hogg @ Jun 9th 2008 6:53PM
Seriously Engadget you guys need more Iphone coverage. You only have about 6 stories on the 1st page. I need my apple fan boy fix for the day. ..... sarcasm
Market Data @ Jun 9th 2008 9:52PM
If you guys hate the iPhone so much, why don't you go some where else. We don't come here to read about other stupid technologies, like cameras or video games or general technological advancements. We come here to read about the iPhone and Chinese-iPhone rip-offs. If you don't like it, leave.
Engadget should change its slogan to "Fair and Balanced"
Vidit Bhargava @ Jun 9th 2008 7:58PM
yeah...you guys need a makeover...enadget is down the drain...you guys have become enapple

Jonathan @ Jun 9th 2008 6:04PM
can everyone stop jacking off, about the iphone?
Jakob Henner @ Jun 9th 2008 6:06PM
We can, if you just buy us one? Seriously I understand if you are tired of the iPhone news (but still there is only about 8-10 posts about it), no one say you have to click on them?
Eg. I could care less about another Chinese PMP, therefore I usually don't click on the story, you should try the same.
Scott Miller @ Jun 9th 2008 6:31PM
@Jakob Henner
Look just because you have a brain and can muster up the willpower to not click on the link and post an unintelligent comment, doesn't mean everyone has too.
Let them say what they will on an Apple related post, It only makes them look cheep, picky, uninformed, and childish.
required @ Jun 9th 2008 6:04PM
I hope that they don't amount to just a lot of e-waste as I'm sure plenty of folks would be into tiling walls with them
Craig B. @ Jun 9th 2008 6:04PM
After writing, but then deciding not to post a sarcastic iPhone comment, I think I'll just say that I'm taking a couple day break from Engadget; this non-stop Apple barrage is starting to get a little too much.
Rich tormet @ Jun 9th 2008 6:04PM
$80
tyler @ Jun 9th 2008 6:05PM
... but soon you can get a new 3G phone for $199
good luck selling that ;o
Bassir @ Jun 9th 2008 6:06PM
What's an iPhone?
Wii60 @ Jun 9th 2008 6:28PM
It's a linksys VOIP phone, check it out.
Daniel @ Jun 9th 2008 6:06PM
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm keeping my old iPhone... Don't care much for the 3G or tacky plastic, the only thing different that is actually useful is the GPS.
Its appears as apple has taken a couple steps back with this one... (aside from the price)
Zak @ Jun 9th 2008 6:27PM
Yes, increasing the OTA speed is taking a couple steps backward... somehow. Wait, how does that work again?
The plastic is because metal blocks cell radios. With 3G and GPS, Apple had to make the back all plastic to accommodate that. This is real basic stuff here. didn't you ever notice the black strip on the bottom of the first iPhone? That was plastic. Want to guess why?
HBKDinobot @ Jun 9th 2008 6:06PM
Mine will live on as long as it's $10 more a month for data or there's no way to get around it.
fourthletter @ Jun 9th 2008 6:06PM
*YAWN* Bring on the new macbooks already.
New iPhone is twice as fast as the old (That is not quite 3G) and looks virtually identical *YAWN*
Zak @ Jun 9th 2008 6:29PM
Why would they announce Macbooks at a DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE? Were you just not aware of what this event was today or something?
Sean @ Jun 9th 2008 6:37PM
why not? they announced iphones at a DEVELOPER'S CONFERENCE, didn't they?
tyler @ Jun 10th 2008 12:02AM
haha oooooh burrnnnnn
Johan S @ Jun 9th 2008 6:07PM
Assuming you already have regular cell phone service (this is america we better all have cell phones), the total added cost of new iPhone:
$199 + $30 (monthly cost of additional required AT&T data plan) =
$919
So compare that $919 with the cost and features of HTC Diamond, Sony Xperia X1, or even the Blackberry Bold .. it's not that great of a deal IMHO.
costitis @ Jun 9th 2008 6:12PM
Uhm, there's a data plan attached to those phones as well you Dumb Ass....
Johan S @ Jun 9th 2008 6:43PM
@costitis
Did I say there wasn't?
Anyway, all I was pointing out is that the low price is not ridiculously low when you take that into account. Other data plans for competing phones are cheaper .. and a $10 reduction in monthly cost is $240 over 2 years.
narutogrey @ Jun 9th 2008 7:15PM
Windows mobile professional phones such as the X1 and the HTC Diamond require AT&T's $40/month PDA/smartphone plan, not the $20 "data plan". $30 for the iphone (i'm guessing AT&T decided an iPhone was somewhere between a normal cell phone and a smartphone) is actually less than the data plan you would get w/ HTC's touch, diamond, tilt, etc...
Of course you can just add the $20 plan if you want, but that applies to both the iPhone and it's competitors.
Jer @ Jun 9th 2008 6:07PM
Enough about the iPhone engadget.
Hamidxa @ Jun 10th 2008 3:15AM
Amen, there are literally dozens upon dozens of more worthy phones to discuss on here rather than this trite, over-hyped, under-functional device.
pt phoner @ Jun 9th 2008 6:07PM

Who in their right mind would buy a 4GB 1st Gen refurbished iPhone with a small scratch on the screen top-left?
Yeah, that's what I thought... My brother wouldn't even take it for free...

Funny how you post a "news" like this one here at engadget while the HTC Diamond review got dumped at Engadget mobile.
Jakob Henner @ Jun 9th 2008 6:11PM
Like it or not, but iPhone appeals to much more people than Diamond (which I admit, is awesome)
More popular products get more media coverage
Hamidxa @ Jun 10th 2008 4:32AM
iPhone gets trounced by the Diamond however in terms of functionality, versatility, and capabilities.
iPhone is a joke compared to most PPC phones out there.
