iPhone 3G is finally official, starts at $199, available July 11th

Battery life isn't getting put out to pasture though, with 300 hours of standby, 8-10 hours of 2G talk, 5 hours of 3G talk, 7 hours of video and 24 hours of audio. GPS is also a go. Apple is using A-GPS, which supplements regular satellite GPS data with info from cellular towers for faster location. (WiFi data is also worked into the mix, which should give users a pretty solid lock on where the heck they are on this planet.) Unfortunately, as expected there's no front-facing cam, and while its edges are thinner than before it's still about a millimeter thicker at the center (12.3mm over 11.6mm before). Apple hopes to launch in 70 countries this year, with the black 8GB going for $199 and 16GB for $299 in black or white. (Both price points require a contract, of course.) Apple will be hitting the 22 biggest markets, including the US, on July 11th. More info after the break.
Update: Just bought an iPhone? Listen up: "Customers who purchased a 2.5G iPhone on or after May 27 and want to swap it out for a new iPhone will be able to do so without incurring an additional handset charge for the new device. They will of course need to turn in their 2.5G iPhone." And for the rest of you, AT&T says there's no way to buy it without agreeing to a contract. So sorry. More details here.

Other tidbits:
- It's a teensy bit thicker. 4.5 by 2.4 by 0.48 inches (115.5 by 62.1 by 12.3 mm), and weighs 4.7 ounces (133 grams).
- Radios galore: Wi-Fi (802.11b/g), UMTS / HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100MHz), GSM / EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900MHz), Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
- A SIM ejector comes in the box, at last. That would be a paper clip.
- There's no dock included, just a USB power adapter and dock connector.
- On AT&T unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, on top of voice plans starting at $39.99 a month. Unlimited 3G data for business users will be $45 a month, on top of voice. There's a minimum two-year agreement, but we're not positive what that'll look like for those currently enslaved to an AT&T contract -- you could be looking at a solid four years of time if you just took the plunge.
- Apple's new MobileMe service will be coming with the iPhone 2.0 software, bringing push email and contacts for all.

For those looking to use another carrier for the new iphone the 8-gigabyte version will cost $599, and the 16-gigabyte version will cost $699. No doubt the excessive price is because they really want people to stay with AT&T. So much Greed, so little time.

if you were to go to AT&T's coverage viewer and select "show 3g coverage," you'll see exactly how "good" this 3g service is going to be. and by the way, verizon has had 3g service since 2002.
this is really a revolution in the telecommunication industry , apple is always pioneer in Hi Tech.I hope it will be available in Gulf Countries very Soon
The price if you already have an iphone (or just an AT&T account that is still under a 2 year contract) is $399 or $499 so all you iphone fanboys who want the latest and greatest will have to fork over an extra $200 to get that slick 3g speed.
Apple and ATT have teamed up to completely deceive the public on this one. I went into an ATT store today only to learn that for existing customers, the iPhone is actually $200 more per model than they have advertised. They are charging an early upgrade fee to cover the cost that they pay to Apple for each iPhone sold.

I think it's pretty raunchy of Apple to keep advertising the new 3G iPhone as $199! Of course it says, "Starting at $199" but who realizes that this is only for AT&T customers eligible for phone upgrades? I didn't realize this until I started digging around in the questions area of the emails I've been getting about the new iPhone. I think it stinks to advertise this way and then make loyal AT&T customers not able to get the new iPhone at the $199 cost. I am not eligible for my next upgrade until Feb. and I was all excited about this iPhone. I purposely waited to get this one after hearing about the better 3G service and the lower cost. It seems like false advertising to keep advertising this as a cheaper device when, really, it is not!

The prices on the new I-Phone 3G are not correct. I spoke to an AT & T rep yesterday and asked about the prices. She told me that $199-$299 is the upgrade price for current I-Phone owners and NEW purchase prices are $399-$499.
I have not even purchased one yet I already feel ripped off and violated. The people at the Apple store net me had no comment in repsonse to question regarding thses prices.
So, be prepared to get sticker shocked at the cash register on Friday.
I don't understand - am I missing something? I am planning to buy the new 3G tomorrow - I currently have the original Iphone. Are you telling me it is not $299 ... but $499. What does it take to get it for $299? Completely confused.
Don't waste your time. I just spent all night waiting in line with my son only to find out that since my contract doesn't expire for 11 months, I get charged $499 instead of $299 for the 16gb. This is crap! Where does it say "twice the speed, half the price....unless you are already a paying customer". I'm so disappointed in Apple's false advertising!

The price of the new iPhone 3G is $399 if you are an existing AT&T customer and NOT eligible for the upgrade. It is only $199 if you are an At&T customer who IS eligible for the upgrade on your current phone. I was very angry to find this out. I just got off the phone with an AT&T rep.

I'm not thrilled with this advertising about the new iPhone 3G. All the hype has been that the hand set is only $200, therefore the initial cost is less! That is simply NOT true! If you are a current AT&T customer and you're NOT eligible for an upgrade on your current phone, then the cost is still $400! You are not saving even a penny on this new iPhone and of course the data plan is more expensive! I"m not happy at all! I didn't notice them advertising that little tidbit with all this hype!
The commonly stated price for the new iPhone is very misleading. It only holds for new customers or for customers who are very near renewal. We're 15 months into our 2 year contract with ATT and we'd have to pay $399 for the 8 GB version or $499 for the 16 GB version. A real screwing for ATT's existing customers.
Yuding with ATT on a great pricing misinformation. the new iPhone is only $199 for new customers or ATT custormers very near the end of their contracts. For loyal ATT customers in the middle of their contracts, the phone is $200 more than stated, that is $399 for the 8 GB version.
Shame on you for being part of this pricing deception.

I am seriously disappointed, Today i tried to purchase two i phones for me and my father. I was excited as i have put off buying a second hand unit and just putting my rogers chip in it. The adverts state that the phone can be purchased at 199.00 but to my surprise and dismay, I was told i could not purchase the phone unless i was able to receive an UPGRADE. Which i was not. Because of this the price jumped to 350 and then 450, i was on the phone and the price rose higher and higher. So as they put it " unless i sign up for a new account I would either have to pay double or more for the same phone or not get it. I don't know how this could be, as i have been a customer of rogers for many years and have long awaited the arrival, but it seams that rogers doesn't give a damn about weather i am an existing client. so i didn't get one and i am extremely saddened that a company can monopolize the industry and manipulate prices and nothing can be done. what era are we living in?, where are the regulations? wtf? I am still in shock.

iSucker: Someone dumb enough to pay $399 upfront, then some excessively high monthly fee to AT&T (AT&T is obviously rebating a portion of the monthly fee to SJ to make up the true cost of the device), for a device inferior to the Samsung Instinct ($229 less $100 rebate = $129) and Sprint's relatively low $99/mo Unlimited Plan fee.

Just got back from Apple. If you are currently an AT&T customer with a 2 year contract and NOT eligible for an upgrade, then the 8GB iPhone is $399 (the 16GB iPhone is $499). The $199/$299 price is only for new AT&T customers or current AT&T customers eligible for an upgrade. They won't let you just sign a new contract and buy the phone for $199. Be prepared to pay more if you are not eligible for an upgrade!
OK Apple sucks big time
I ordered a phone on Friday from an AT&T store since they were already sold out.
I was told the phones would be available on Monday.
Now they are telling me it could be weeks before the back ordered phones arrive to the customers.
What a scam.
Apple obviously didn't have the phones to meet the demand.
Time to cancel my contract and look for a carrier and phone with better service.

Why is it that its advertised for 199.99 but u try 2 get 1 with out a new 2 year contract and it is 399.99,,, false advertising if u ask me.....I already have a contract with AT&T...
