We hear Apple popped out
a new phone or something today. All hearsay, but we though we'd run it by you. The $199 pricepoint for the 8GB, Exchange support, A-GPS and 3G data all make an extremely compelling case, but Apple still has plenty to improve on -- there's still no physical keyboard, if you hadn't noticed (a dealbreaker for some), and Apple has yet to confirm things as common-sensical as copy and paste, video recording and MMS. There's also another little problem for a few folks out there: the resale price on your iPhone is now approximately nil, so good luck offloading that sucker. But enough about what we think, what's on your mind?

Seriosuly for all those whinin about flash, it's a smart phone not a camera, if you want a camer go buy one! Crikey!
Personally, I'd prefer if they would take the blasted camera out and use the space/cost for something more useful. Something like: more memory, research cost into finding out that no one wants to be tied down to o2 OR a contract in the UK.
Seriosuly for all those whinin about a screen, it's a phone not a computer, if you want a computer go buy one! Crikey!
I guess you just have to try it, if the camera quality is good enough. Having a camera with you is very handy. I take pictures of things I need to remember, I can even use it as a portable scanner. And it's also fun. And because it's one device that is portable enough, I have it with me at all times.
My company pays for a Blackberry (device), voice service, and data service. Unfortunately this decision is bigger than me - we can't get access to our Exchange server if the company doesn't allow for it (which it doesn't).
So while the US Army is looking at these, my 30,000 person company is not...
Ehhh, I'm still quite content with my Nokia N95-4 8gb version and the lack of MMS / video and the extra 10 bucks a month I have to pay for internet with ATnT wouldn't be worth it for me. T-Mo is about ready to release 3G so I am fine where I'm at. Thanks though Apple for at least not insulting us by tricking us into paying 400 or 500 dollars for a phone that lacks in some pretty basic features...
Nah, all the good features use the internet, and for internet useage I would have to get a £35 a month contract with o2, which I cannot afford.
If you can compose SMS messages horizontally, it has MMS and I can get it outside of an AT&T contract, sure, I'll get one.
no. first of all, i have a feeling this thing doesn't have the same construction quailty of the first (something i experienced with the ipod), the gps is pretty useless to me (maps is good enough for me) and i don't even have 3G in my area.
why no 32GB iPhone?
I'm still on my trusty K750i from about three years ago so looking for a new phone. Still don't know the deal on the unlocking and if you will be able to buy one without signing a contract in store. It all seems to be opinion, and trying to interpret how things were said, at the moment.
So if you can buy it and unlock it then defiantly will be buying one otherwise will be looking elsewhere - I would think this would be the same for many people so the sooner this can be officially answered the better.
You say no resale value.. but, assuming these rumors of having to activate new iPhones when buying one is true, then theres no more buying a iPhone and then unlocking it. So rev 1 unlocked iPhones still have value!
they cheapened down the iphone with less asthetically appealing materials, charged less for the upfront cost, but now SEALED you into a 2yr agreement with at&t and hiked the mandatory data plan up enough to make up for the lower price over 2 years.
oh yeah, and at&t's 3G coverage sucks
I'm interested to see how this impacts the iPod Touch and the rest of the iPod line. The Touch currently starts at $299 - and the iPod Classic at $250. You would think they'll be making some adjustments to those prices in the very near future.
With the exception of a physically better camera/flash - nearly every other gripe (MMS, Stereo bluetooth, Copy/paste, image stabilization, etc) are software issues and could be implemented (I hope) by any number of third party developers.
Why would the ability to compose SMS horizontally be a deal breaker on this? How long are your SMS messaes? lol. Anything longer than approx 100 characters and your paying for more messages anyway.
the dealbreaker part is that the landscape keyboard has bigger keys for all those people out there with fat fingers (hint hint, american obesity crisis)
Well, I'm English and a moderately trim 190lbs with girly pianist hands, so it's not an American obesity issue. I have spent a good couple of hours using the iPhone in the Apple store and as someone who can type incredibly fast on both my QWERTY-based WinMo phone and numeric keypads alike, the touchscreen leaves a lot to be desired for me.
Having it horizontal would increase the size of the keys, and the spacing of them, allowing more precise key presses.
Does this mean that within 2 months, the 8GB iPhone will either be discontinued or lowered $100 and they create a 32GB iPhone for $299???
Knowing Mr. Jobs... I think I prolly gotta wait on this one!
No, I had the current 16GB Unlocked version, why bother with this. probably can't walkout buying an iphone without contract, 30 bucks for a data plan is insade, is like paying HIGH SPEED internet in you home.. And you can't use this as a modem. Sure might able to unlocked later on, but will be a while and is it true no sim card installed? there's no picture of 3G iphone top position to see if sim slot is still there. 3G not really a must had for me, i not even use data plan now since wifi is enough for me.
Richard, the previous topic on engadget says that a SIM ejetor is included in the box, so I would assume thatthe phone has a sim card.
I for one am glad there is no physical keyboard the presence of one would be a deal breaker for me...in fact I wouldn't even give it a second glance if it had a physical keyboard, but thats my personal preference.
i can only imagine how many iphones apple would sell if they would just open up the iphone to every carrier like sprint and verizon.. it would be insanity
This.... x 10 !!!
If I could get this phone on my Sprint SERO plan, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
Nope Crackberry user waiting on the Bold to be released.
Price point ($199) is attractive.
Extra $10/m over 24 months turns this into a $440 upgrade. That's a lot of dough for those that have a v1 device.
Another way to look at this is to take the phone @ $199 + $80/month (for basic voice/data) x 24 months = $2100 for 2 years of cellular phone use.
Buying the Touch Diamond or Instinct using SERO will cost (approximately) $200 (for the device) + $30/month (for basic voice/data) x 24 months = $900.
The iPhone is nice. Just not convinced that it's $1000 nicer than a Diamond or Instinct.
Im waiting for whatever meizu bring out
I sold my 8GB last friday for 350, so I have extra 150.
My old POS Verizon LG Chocolate already does most of the stuff the 3G iphone does and some more. I got the gps, stereo bluetooth, and even VIDEO.
It's just not as sexy as the iphone.
And ultimately people, that's what's going to sell this phone.
The low price tag really reflects the lack of features that this "smartphone" really does.
Not unless Verizon offers it as a free upgrade when my contract expires in a year. (In other words, no).
Verizon is CDMA, iPhone is GSM. It won't work with Verizon.
Too many good phones being released or going to be released soon, to just jump on the iPhone day 1.

i like luck of old one better much more official looking and matching my MBP but hey i need 3g i want 16 gigs so...1 white 16gb Iphone please :)
they should have some kind of a trade in program, i have a 8GB iPhone, and am thinking about the new one, 3g and gps would be nice, i actually went from a 3g windows mobile phone to the iPhone. i think we should be able to trade in the 8gb model if its in perfect condition for a 16gb model since is close to what you paid if u got the 8gb one
And you can... if you bought it after the 27th of May.
The sad thing is a lot of people will be paying $10 more for 3G they can't even get because the AT&T 3G coverage is really not that great.
My jailbroken 1.0 phone is working just fine. OK, so surfing is a bit slow, and the geo-location thing is hokey at best ... but I can already download a bunch of apps for free for it ... and develop my own without having to be vetted by Apple.
I will probably upgrade the firmware to 2.0, but not before a tried and test means to jailbreak it is out there. I think pwnage already does the bizniz but I'll wait until the final release to be sure.
For those interested, my Nokia N95 8G has cut and paste. (Not sure of regular N95 with older firmware.) And the way it works is quite clever. Using the DPAD to highlight (text) is very reliable as you select each character with each nudge. I'm massively let down by Apple. The flash in my N95 is invaluable for taking every day photos, such as products in supermarket (for reference), friends, family etc. And the video on the N95 is excellent. What is the point of all this Mobile Me stuff, Facebook integration, if the camera is pants? I still have to carry more than one device with iPhone - and then somehow get it online! No Stereo bluetooth either. Keeping my N95 8G Black (free on Vodafone UK!) until a compelling alternative arrives. (Built in SatNav in my Nokia is great - and fun too.)
... and when the iPod Touch comes down to about 99USD, grab one of those cuz tethering the n95 to it is "pants", as you say.
Yes. I've finally finished viewing the WWDC video. The applications showed were simply amazing. The games were stunning and priced very competitively. The developers really emphasized the power of the iPhone and how the SDK has allowed them to develop with nearly no hinderance to their goals. Unlike developing for many other "me to" mobile devices.
I'm going to get one, but I'm unhappy about the $30 data charge, because I will need to add on 1500 text messages, so it ends up being $40.
Add that to the data plan, and you have $80.
My only concern is although the price of the device has dropped if you get the 8GB with the increase in data plan, over the 2 year contract you pay an extra $40 out. AT&T really have run the scam on this.
Not good.
$200 was tempting but then I found out it is with 2yr plan with ATT with data plan. Maybe if they just gave me the phone for $200, I will still go with their $40/month phone plan. Was hoping they would open the phone up to additional carriers, also.
Hey, where's the option for those that are perfectly happy with their current iPhone? I don't need no stinking 3G! :P
2.0 is enough for me, thanks. :)
I AGREE!!
Cheers!
I'll get one when it has:
Video Recording
MMS
Cut & Paste
Bluetooth Audio
3.2MP+ Camera
Multi-Tasking
Choice of network
Looks like my next phone will be the S.E. Experia X1 or HTC Touch Pro.
I'm quite interested although the 2MP camera is defiantly an issue, the fact that the maximum capacity is 16GB is also a downer but I can probably work around that one.
I suppose the next month I'll go over the info a bit and decide what's right for my needs; Besides the obvious phone functions the next big use is using mobile web frequently away from the PC (Total net addiction lol). Geo Tagging would be super cool on a device like that (even though my N95 does it already) and of course the comparason to the Xperia X1 mainly for the keyboard + 3mp camera.

unfair.
i paid mine for $499, and how come they cut the price? half-way. sh*t.
It's all smoke and mirrors. The price isn't cut in half at all because you have to pay $10 more a month. Thats $240 more without tax just for the contract.
i mean the price of the iphone itself. but thanks BTW. that was clear.
