Canon EOS Rebel XS lands, shoves XT aside
Goodnight XT and XTi, hello EOS Rebel XS -- we've been expecting you. Companion to the more recent XSi new DSLR has a larger 2.5-inch screen 10 megapixel sensor, live view display, 3fps burst shooting, DIGIC III image processor, seven point AF, and a bundled EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. Unfortunately this is only going live in Japan today -- we'll be stuck waiting until next month for the US launch, which will supposedly place it in the $600-800 price range (we know, it's wide, we've got very little to go by right now). One more shot of the rear after the break.

or you could do it like this :)

The body is not attractive in any color in my opinion, quite ugly now, seems they need someone to give the designers some feedback because it's getting progressively worse.
The XSi is a 12MP imager, not 10.
As to availability they are available now. I've had mine for over a month now.

Re: subhumanspider:
You obviously don't do documentary or photojouralism photography. "Live View" can best be used to get shots where you have to hold the camera over your head or below your hip. This way, you can see what you're camera is looking at. Trust me, Live View is not just for amateurs.
How exactly do you propose to see what's on the LCD without it swiveling?
you can catch a glimpse of them on the side, or angles... better than just the viewfinder at that point...
a pivot or swivel would have been better.... but then some complain about that because it makes it weaker design wise by having the hinge/pivot.
no matter what you do... someone will complain. ;)
All you need to know is that you aren't chopping off the subject's head, you can always crop later.
I too appreciate the Live View on my canon.
Rebel has always had a black option. The 1st 300D/Rebel black body was introduce late in production, but from the 350/TX you could find one. SD cards make senses as most buyers will have a few from their P/S camera, plus no more bent pins. Nikon did that starting with the D40 2 years ago. Had a black body for my 1st Rebel and with a Battery grip made it look like a 10D or 20D. Put a little black tape over the rebel badge and shot many a job.
The features on it look exactly identical to the XTI aside from the live view, sd slots, the missing JUMP button, seven point autofocus system, and higher capacity batteries. All of this is better except the jump button and the seven point AF, which doesn't really matter. This is a great deal for new buyers, but very unfair to the people that bought the XTI recently for less features and higher price than the XS. Other than that, this would be a great camera to consider. And I do agree with most people, that Liveview maybe sometimes useful, but in my opinion, defeats the purpose of an SLR if you use the LCD all the time, and adds extra, unneeded noise too. I still think that this will actually hit the sales of the XSI really hard. I actually like the layout of the buttons on the XTI and XT better than XSI or the XS.

I saw some hands on picture of the Rebel XS or EOS 1000D as called in Europe
The Japanese buy these. Why do you think these cameras which seem to us like they are professional boytoys are called the "Kiss Digital" in Japan? I wondered, "Do Japanese schoolgirls in seira-fuku carry around DSLRs and giggle cutely while taking pictures in Tokyo?" Turns out they do, as many pictures will show. The silver bodies are most likely for the benefit of the Japanese.
I believe the companies name product differently in the US and Europe because it is easier for consumers (and retailers for that matter) to know that what they are purchasing or selling is in fact intended for the US market and not grey market goods - likewise for Europe, though I think fewer Europeans care whether they buy a US version of a product unless it is somehow crippled in features as so many companies do these days - the European laws are much more progressive I think with regards to warranty and liability than the US, but that is another discussion.
cheers!

I just purchased a Canon Rebel EOS XT 8 megapixel with the 18-55 mm lens kit on Ebay (new, never opened package) for $360 + $13 shipping. I am strictly an amateur looking to move up from my 5 year old Olympus point and shoot. Just looking for something to take nice family and vacation pictures. Am I alright with what I bought or could I have done better with something different? I assumed I got the pricing due to the camera becoming an outdated model.
Just Googled 1000d and saw that XS/1000D is available at two online stores (for around $475-495 body only, $550 with 18-55 lines). Thought this was going to be available in UK July 31 and US soon after.
Any idea if Broadway Photo and/or Camera Addict are legit? They say they have in stock now and would like to buy asap. The photo of the camera is XS, though the adds include European naming conventions (Kiss/1000d). Not sure if it's wise to buy a camera that are (if these are) intended for UK/European market.
Advice?
