Unsubsidized iPhone 3G priced at ?499/?569 in Europe
This morning we're getting a first look at unsubsidized prices for the iPhone 3G in Europe. Vodafone Italy has set an out-of-contract price for the iPhone 3G at 499/€569 ($773/$881) for the 8GB/16GB models, respectively. Subscription rates have not yet been announced. While steep, those prices are actually smartphone-reasonable in Italy (and around Europe) where an HTC Touch Cruise with its WiFi, tri-band HSDPA data, GPS, and touchscreen sells for €549. Capisce?[Thanks, Andrea]

Aye i dont think it's too bad either. It might not be dirt cheap like some had imagined. Especially when Apple has this amazing habit to think that €=$.
I'll pay whatever to be part of the elite of creative people.
No no :) I really get it ! The problem is just that in Belgium Apple CAN NOT offer subsidised phones via a carrier. That's the law here. I cant' buy the 199$ equivalent here. It'll be the no conract one. (Only option)
Something that no one is talking about is language. In places like France or Belgium where we are more than likely going to see an unlocked iphone, will it be available in english? I have some some posts about Spanish speaking americans not being able to get spanish iphones in the states, so i wonder if you can actually buy an english iphone in paris, regardless of cost.
You have to worry about the warranty. But you can change the language on the iPhone on the fly. There is no "spanish" iPhone.
Okay I am pretty sure that jobs stated that its going to be 199/299 respectively on a global level not that Europe could set their own damn prices!!
He was talking about subsidized prices.
Please note: Those prices includes 20% VAT (by law you can't announce a consumer price without factoring the VAT in first).
I meant: by Italian law...
I just really want them selling it unlocked from apple stores.
@quert
I don't think that you are correct. However, I won't suggest that you are stupid. By chance are you talking about Europe as if that is the world. Are you an American in Europe ?
Jacob,
you're quite correct, VAT isn't paid on income, it's paid on everything we purchase after the income tax is paid. And yes, i browsed the internet and just saw that Denmark has passed Sweden in tax pressure, at least in relation to GNP. The 85% I was talking about is for the regular taxpayer though, not the GNP, not sure how it stands there!! :D
Can't really compare Scandinavia to India or Russia though, they are countries with extreme differencies in income, India is even classed as a third world country if I know my stuff right. I'm not really complaining, but I must say the cost differences between the US and Scandinavia are sometimes ridiculous, especially if you look at the small difference in VAT. Eg cameras in NYC with a VAT of 9% are still usually over 30% cheaper than to buy them here. And for a normal white-collar worker $300 simply isn't as much for an American as it is for a Swede.. Just my two cents!
AND WHY is the beer soo much cheaper in Denmark??? hehe
//Jens
It's funny, there hasn't seem to been much mention about people like me who are already under an AT&T contract, have a phone other than the current iPhone, but are not eligible for an equipment upgrade through AT&T. I'll gladly pay $199 for the iPhone 3G if it means extending my contract. Have I missed something here? Has the price I'll pay been determined yet?
AFAIK $199 for the 8GB 3G iPhone is the same for anyone that wants it. I would imagine you would just transfer your current number over and restart your 2 year contract.
That is what I did last year when I switched to AT&T and got a Blackjack. 2 months into my contract I bought an iPhone and restarted my contract from the date of purchase without any extra cost.
No, the price hasn't been determined yet.
I myself am outside my 'eligible upgrade' period. According to ATT, I may be eligible in June of 2009, maybe a true 2nd-generation iPhone will be out by then, mmm?
Honestly, I'm also trying to figure out why everyone seems so stumped by this. It's simple. Apple and ATT are no longer selling and activating iPhones the previous way. They are now treating the iPhone as a regular cell phone. No different than buying a razr 2 or a Tilt.
To answer questions about 'how much it's going to be?' - no one knows. But if previous subsidies are any indication, I wouldn't be surprised if the price jumps back to the previous $399/$499 for non-upgrade eligible customers. $150-$200 seems to be the norm when it comes to subsidies.
That being said. I'm getting the iPhone 3G. If the subsidy is too high for me to justify paying for it, one my other lines is upgrade eligible in July 2008. I'm getting this phone because, it will change the game. It definitely will. I know alot of people are saying "o, it's not much of an upgrade" and "o, it's only worth it if you live in a 3G area". True, it is practically only a case and cellular radio change - but HSDPA will be huge on this phone, more so than other phones, and for many reasons. And the truth is, ATT's 3G network is about to be completed in every major metropolitan market in the US. I'm excited for this phone, and ramifications that will most certainly follow.
Well this is a great price.. because it is a NO CONTRACT and NO PAY MONTHLY TAX...
It is unlock to vodafone but you can use ANY tariff prepaid or plans
for 7,50€ you get unlimited browsing 3G or EDGE
And you have 1500 FREE SMS (text menssaging) per week.
In prepaid !
You only pay calls :)
Sorry for my bad english.
Yeah, I might like spending money but I don't throw it away.
(Newswire beeps...) This just in! Sales of iPhone 3G fall flat!
Ok so that might not really happen... but there is a pretty large issue that AT&T is overlooking... their target market.
The people that bought the first iPhone are going to be in large part the ones that will want the 3G version. Most of these customers are not going to be eligible for an equipment upgrade discount (that magical 199/299 figure) until 8 months after iphone 3G is released. AT&T's subsidized pricing (and most marketing in general) has always been, primarily, aimed at NEW customers. Most of the new customers they have to attract already bought the first one. That's their niche market. And this market just got the big 2 year contract shaft. The ball also got dropped here by Apple discontinuing the first model. I, as a current customer way outside of my subsidized upgrade window, would be much more drawn to the original iphone than the new one just because of the price. And, let's be completely honest here, the new 3G model doesn't offer THAT much more than the first iphone. Especially if you don't live in a metropolitan area that has a 3G network.
So will sales of iphone 3G do well, probably... you'd be hard pressed to find a much bigger bandwagon than the one apple drives... will it meet expectations... I don't think so... maybe after March 09 the sales will probably pick up... this is when customers that got the iphone at it's initial should be eligible for the discounted equipment upgrade (give or take).
oh and unsubsidized does not necessarily mean unlocked.
There will not be an 'equipment upgrade discount.' The price, with contract, is 199/299 USD.
Have engadget readers never had a cell phone plan or subsidized handset before? The mind boggling stupidity of some of these questions/statements/predictions is, well, mind boggling.
People who bought an iPhone are automatically eligible for upgrading to a new one, however their 2-year contract resets.
Considering Vodafone New Zealand's poor subsidy track record, it looks like I'll have to sell my kidney for an iPhone.
Has anyone found out what the AT&T Early Termination fee and unlock policy is on the iPhone ?
just a note for people who want to sell their old iPhones, I sold mine on sunday for £287.99 ($562) even after mondays announcement they are still selling for around £250+ on ebay ($487) so might be an idea for you guys to get shut before 11th July if you want the new one :p matt
Since the first iPhone is the only one that can be freely unlocked, I'll hold onto mine until demand spikes for them. Remember that in many areas, there is NO 3G service, so a first gen iPhone is still a great phone.
ok...so now you can get an unlocked iphone and bring it to the US...what are you going to do with it? go to t-mobile?
will this work like iphone1 where everything is the same sans visual voicemail?
You could just buy the iPhone, cancel, keep the phone, pay the $175 ETF and have a $375 iPhone, which then you can unlock. It will be cheaper than the last generation.
You can't cancel it before 30 days have past and still keep the phone (they give you a full refund on everything). Instead you have to wait after the 30 day mark where you'll need to pay $70+tax for the first month's service. That ends up being $494 for an 8GB model and $594 for a 16GB. We're back to launch prices again.
Besides, what is the point when no other GSM carrier in the US has a compatible 3G network? Might as well stick to a cheaper and easier to unlock 1st gen iPhone.
Went to ATT store yesterday and spoke with two different sales people on the phone. I was going to sign up with ATT this week and get a free phone then upgrade when they had iPhones in stock. Here is what they have said:
"You will not be able to upgrade to the iPhone for $199, at any point in your contract. There is a 30 day grace period that I can switch my phone out but there is on promise that I will get an iPhone in the next 30 days. No you can not just re-up your contract, your only option is to cancel the first contract and start a completely new one for $150."
Either they are full of it or ATT and Apple are going to really irritate a LOT of their current customers by not letting them upgrade during their contract.
i dont understand your point? your saying that if you sign up for a contract now, and upgrade just because you fancy after only a month it they wont let you have an iphone? of course they wont that's ridiculous. No contract would let you do that
the point is that existing customers (in the uk at least) no matter how far into their iphone contract, can get the new phone for free (tarriff depending) as a gesture of goodwill, AND because it locks them in for another 18 months. So if people bought one at launch the provider has secured the past year or so PLUS at least another 18 months. they still make money.
they are also saying to non customers, if you want an iphone its not as much as you thought, so join up
at no point are they saying "join up for any phone, any tariff, and then we will throw you a free iphone when it comes out". They arnt trying to get EVERYONE on the network to have an iphone, they are trying to keep hold of existing IPHONE customers for longer via incentive or pull in new people. Expecting to upgrade, even if your willing to pay, whenever you feel like it cos a new phone has come out has never been an option but it's just stupid, you sign a contract for a reason. yeh the network gets you custom but they arnt just going to hand out phones whenever you want, thats what pay as you go is for. You pay more but its up to you what you do, not your contract
also i dont get people saying the price of the iphone isnt the tag price, but the price of your contract. Why has everyone just got confused? the monthly fee is for your minutes, texts and data - not the phone. There is no alarming at all about the iphone tariffs in britain, they are pretty decent tariffs considering you get unlimited date (1 mb is charged at £350) - for £35 you get 600 mins, 500 texts, and unlimited data - that to me is where my £35 a month goes, even more so once we have 3g.
the fact is, financially the iphone is no different to any other phone past or present in terms of fees or contract. I dont know why some people expected a shake up of the way contracts work - its a phone not a provider
I think the price would be lower in Asia coz there are many competitors like LG and Samsung, releasing similar design & function cell phones.
@Gorjan:
Strange why in Germany I have to pay 500€ a semester to study? And thanks to that I can't afford gas for my "Eco Freindly Car", there are no classes in Europe, all middle class right (All through I help give out free food for the needy and every week more school kids come in hungry) thats why USA is evil, Big Buisness is Evil, Big Goverments who are so social is good, errr not for me.
Atleast in America you can work your way up if you want, here you either have to be rich or stay poor the rest of your life. But one thing is nice in Germany thanks to the nice Retirement pay when I reach that age I get some money because its social here, err wait wrong, thanks to all the taxes I'm paying now and the birth rate going down while the old people rate is going up looks like not to much will be left it the pot when I am in need.
FAAAIIIILLL
F U APPLE for kicking us in the nuts again.
I have a macbook pro and i love it but this pricing sucks ass.
The american version costs 199 dollars so technicaly asking 200 to 300 euros should cover your expences.
YOU GUYS BLOODY BETTER DROP THAT PRICE.
This is downright inane.
There are COUNTLESS phones out now and slated for launch later this year that are better deals than this.
What's that saying about an iFool and his money ...
Idiots. This has almost nothign to do with Apple, its AT&T that are screwing you over.
O2 in the UK has the 8GB version free on the £45 and £75 plans, £99 on their £30 and £35 a month plans. The 16GB version is free on the £75 plan, £59 on the £45 plan, and £159 on the £30 and £35 a month plans. All tariffs include unlimited browsing, unlimited Wi-Fi access and visual voicemail, and only have different call and txt amounts.
Anyone already on an iphone contract gets a free upgrade to the comparible size.
No word on the Pay As You Go iphone yet, but based on those prices, it'll be £199 for the 8GB and £259 for the 16GB version.
O2, not screwing us over. AT&T, screwing you right over.
reminder:
For $199 you have to sign a 2-year contract and your phone will be locked to the carrier. USA.
For €499 ($773) you get an unlocked phone. You can keep your current plan, current carrier, go to another county, buy their carrier's sim and use it in your phone with no problems or limitations. Europe.Asia
Unfortunately, they don't say that it ist unlocked. It could very well be locked to the Prepaid-Simcard...
Just that it doesn't come with a contract does not mean it is unlocked.
