ASUS Eee PC 901 priced, reviewed
We now have official US pricing for ASUS' new Eee PC lineup. The Eee PC 901 nabs a $599 MSRP for both Linux and Windows XP versions. The pricing for the 1000 and 1000H models is a bit more fluid (read: could change) but is currently pegged at $699 for an Eee PC 1000 (Linux or Windows XP) and $649 for the Windows XP 1000H (H, as in hard disk drive). We'll have to wait and see how that pricing works out for them with MSI's $399 Wind coming later this summer (the $499 XP version in a few days) along side Acer's $400 Aspire One. Oh, and then there's that pesky Dell E-series said to be starting at $299 by the time they ship in August or September. For now you can check the full reviews, which, as you'd expect, see the evolutionary jumps made by the Eee PC 901 universally commended -- especially the 6-cell, 6600mAh battery. Laptop managed to eke-out 4.38-hours (Stuff, well over 5-hours) of life with WiFi turned on -- well short of the 7.8-hours listed by ASUS but much better than previous Eees. Both reviews share our concern: price.Read -- US Pricing

j.z,
While you're right about Dell vis-a-vis volume pricing, I cannot agree with making the same argument for MSI. Aren't both Asus and MSI are mainly motherboard manufacturers? Before their incursion into and/or creation of the netbook market, did either one of them ever make an out-of-the box consumer product?
£320 in the UK seems like a good deal to me, and stuff seems to suggest the price will fall to £280 shortly (doesnt state a reason).
The MSI Wind is more expensive than that here :(
Confused, don't the asus eee's start at 299 also, even if it's their first model..and I noticed the ones released in asia seem to be cheaper. I know everyone wants a dell E after looking at the price, but do we know what it includes? "Starts at" means it could be the same as what asus lowest price model is like and goes up as there as upgrades are added (bigger screen, bluetooth, more ram, webcam, better housing, etc)..and to even be comparable with the higher priced model would bring a higher pricepoint also. I still like the size of the eee and it's features. New Mac's are still almost twice as much, especially if you want the black instead of white. I travel alot and it needs to fit in the outer pocket of my tote for easy access for endless security checkpoints at airports, which my vaio 10" barely fit. If the others offer the same upgrades at a lower price and the same size, then I'll look into those. Of course, I'd love it if the 901 were as cheap as their original version that had alot less features, but I'd never expect it.
Until Asus actually GET any competition they can charge what they want! Lets wait and see what happens when someone actually DELIVERS an alternative to the mass market (Wind/Aspire etc). I predict the eeePC prices will then start to drop..........

Yeah their done now. There fan base is pissed at them, which is never good. The ONLY thing they can do (Had to use that caps lock there for a second), is lower the price on every model. Give us the $199 dollar cheap ass, laptop that we wanted. I don't want your damn glossy nice finish. I want a laptop that just does what I want it to do, I don't care that it has a decent graphics card in it, or a speedy processor. They lost focus completely. So much money to be made in this market aswell....RIP EEE PC..... We bearly knew yee.
Please add a touch screen and express gate to be complete.
