Intel wastes our time and yours with SL and WoW clients for MIDs
Don't get ahead of us here, Intel isn't building full-featured Second Life and World of Warcraft apps for handheld Mobile Internet Devices. Instead they're using a new "Interactive 3D Streaming" tech to control and view the game remotely -- similar to some to that Telekinesis app we saw playing WoW on the iPhone last year, but Intel seems to be much further along. Their Xeon 5400 server can handle 14 clients simultaneously, but we're guessing this won't be cost effective for Blizzard anytime soon -- though we can imagine quite a few addicts rigging up similar systems for themselves. The sad news here is that Intel might've just discovered the best use for a MID yet.

I just realized something.
Second life's name is similar to Halflife, although I am sure the name origin is different.
Second life = life*2
Half life = life/2 OR the time it takes to decay in half
Also, the game styles are totally different.
yes thank you for sharing that with us >_>
anyway where do I even get an MID?
I just realized something.
You should get some sleep.
Its only 11:56PM in Texas
you remind me of the scientist on south park in the episode where the earth reality show gets canceled. i think i'm gonna have to watch that before i go to sleep now.
It's 2:40 AM here in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada.
I'm out.
Uhh, if you play World of Warcraft, instead of:
A. Doing schoolwork
B. Working
or C. Anything
then you, sir, are wasting your time.
@ Haikibutsu
What the hell dude...
nerd talker your comment made me laugh for the first time since the exam started
"wastes our time and yours?" how are they wasting your time.
oh i forgot. they didn't ask for your permission before starting on this project.
bunch of retards working at engadget.
I am out of here.
hey there. thanks for deigning to take some time off from Mensa to comment on engadget.
but you know, maybe, and i'm going out on a limb here, they're joking about the tendency for said games to consume lots of time.
nah... engadget never makes jokes, they're dead serious. and you're a genius for ratting them out.
it's not a funny joke dude
i believe they were hinting at the fact that they would be using this to waste their time playing second life and WoW, not that intel actually wasted their time...but you know...that's just me
Sir Noobius of Werstershire, don't pretend you knew it was a joke, you're only embarrassing yourself at this point.
Werstershire.
...
Heh heh heh...
Anyone else notice that as it gets later and later, the collective quality of comments just falls off a cliff?
I suppose I'm just adding to the irony. OH SHI-
I still think it's stupid. it doesn't even make sense as a joke.
Uhh, if you play World of Warcraft, instead of:
A. Doing schoolwork
B. Working
or C. Anything
then you, sir, are wasting your time.
This, people, is an example of a bad comment.
And the post from "warrrennnnn" is an example of a double post in reply to two separate comments. Wasn't worth the space the first time, let alone second...
Sirnoobius wastes my time and yours with this comment.
>:[ at no-comment-deletion system.
That could make multiboxing in WoW just a bit easier if properly implemented.
Great... Just what WoW needs, easier multiboxing...
Yet a new way to take your mind off the social life you aren't a part of as you rot in your parent's basement playing with people who are equally doomed.
hey there flashy, dinner's ready! can you take care of the cockroach problem down there first thought?
How does my mom know about my cockroach problem.... down there...
Yeah, how dare people do what they want with their time and money.
Hey, did Clak get banned by the way?
i think he turned into Hamdixa. the karmic imbalance created from when iEye turned windows fanboy created a rift in the spacetime continuum. clak felt the call of destiny and did the unthinkable.
@ Phanbouy:
A yes would've worked just as well.
@ Phanbouy
He went to Gizmodo!? Unthinkable!
*runs*
But hey! At least we are not having problems now.
seriously did he get banned?
i hope.. I cant stand that guy and his infernal quotes surrounded by ?s
I couldn't finish the video. All I kept thinking is "Stop talking. Stop talking. Stop talking. Stop talking. Stop talking. Stop talking. "
developers! developers! developers! developers! developers!
This is actually a very cool concept. Off-site computations that are then streamed to mobile devices... that could have some incredible implications, especially considering how fast wireless data networks have become. Think about it -- if they could crunch the numbers off-site, that probably means all of the data wouldn't have to be on-site to begin with. Hello Xbox 360 titles on the cell phone! =)
But will it play Doom?
I think this technology (the streaming) will be short-lived. A Second Life is totally doable on a high end phone right now. If you cut down some polygons a WoW should be too.
Good concept, wrong device ;)

That looks very nice, seems Intel is putting a lot of teams to work these days...
Ok, so they've just made a dumb terminal with 3d graphics.
This is indeed the future of all apps I believe... Cheap relatively simple terminals at people's homes, and all the computing done off-site and streamed... There are some obvious obstacles in the way, such as bandwidth, server power, etc, but it's obviously the way forward... Why have every home on earth buying expensive power guzzling super computers(PS3/360/QUAD SLI's) when all the number crunching can be centralized??? Subscription based, it's a dream come true for developers(some will disagree, but think about it, what you pay on electricity and software, you'll now pay it to to the devs)... Interesting times ahead. I hope I'm still into videogames when this happens...
I disagree. When I buy something, I want to own it, and not pay a subscription instead. The reason you said it would be a "dream for developers" is the exact reason it would be bad for us: subscriptions leach much more money than one-time purchases. Also, dumb terminals as you describe them were found much more commonly in the past (on college campuses, mostly), when computing power was expensive . The opposite is now becoming true.
You fucking sukc.
And you suck, too, asshole!
Just for the record, this already exists for Second Life.

WHY on earth would I want to play WOW on such a tiny screen??? I prefer gaming on my 17" Widescreen laptop, or my external 19" screen! (When my 19" dies I am getting a 22"+ for gaming.)
SL? Oh... Second Life. Please don't pretend that Second Life is popular enough to be recognizable using only an acronym.
oh there are losers, alright
