More iPhone 3G details: future Apple-made chips, varying visual voicemail, and new video features
There's still plenty of emerging details and news on the iPhone 3G kicking around, but here's what you need to know from the minor bits floating around over the past few days:- Jobs also told NYT that Apple's acquisition of PA Semi was, in fact, intended to reduce Apple's reliance on third-party chip makers. Specifically, he said, "PA Semi is going to do system-on-chips for iPhones and iPods." So, guess that's that.
- Per the feature showing up missing on a number of Apple's international iPhone 3G product pages, iLounge compiled a list of carriers which may or may not planning on implementing visual voicemail. Vodafone in Europe, for example, will not have it at launch, and will delay its rollout until later this year.
- A video of a new iPhone beta build running on live hardware shows videos now in portrait or landscape modes, and includes video playlists. We'll take it.
- Although DT's iPhone page reads differently, German paper Welt has it that T-Mobile Germany will be selling it for €1 -- so basically free, not unlike O2's iPhone 3G launch in the UK.

Well done.
I said all of this last week when I got flamed.
You know I looked over your comment record for well over the past week, and saw none of what I just read in any of your comments.
Boo-frickin-hoo.
Thats for the old, sold out iPhone.

As much as I love Apple, the iPhone banner needs to go. :)
Thanks for the continuous coverage :)
*poof* It's gone!
Just so everyone knows, in previous forum posts Das Boot was trying to buy people old iPhones so he is really just an idiot hypocrite!
I am interested in reading the IMPORTANT information about the iphone. That being said, it is VERY difficult to do so when I have to sort through hordes of useless or redundant information.
yeah? well you're a pumpkin headed nini muggins mr. coolone. I am the proud owners of a blackberry curve. i was just going to buy it and sell it on ebay so an idiot like u can buy it. eat that, biatch. hypocrite? not really. I just think everyone thinks the iphone is the shiznizz which it could be if it werent exclusive for a sucky network.
nah this article is for the new iPhone...the title says "the new iPhone 3G costs 1 euro in Germany"...
Just a note: I saw "The Happening" this weekend and there's a scene that relies heavily on the iPhone to show a video MMS in widescreen view being sent to a lady. I doubt it's anything but usage of a cultural icon, but I thought I'd mention it.
PS -> God, what a horrible movie
It got 20% on rotten tomatoes. I think Shyamalan is way over-rated.
agreed... I almost never looked back after Unbreakable but then I saw Lady in the Water from a recent Netflix rental... really ridiculously amateurish. Not even the laborings of the dude from Sideways could save it
Hi stories always start out kinda cool and the blow it at tend or half way through, this one looks dumb on the ads I think, byt I like Mark Wahlberg (Especially in shooter) so thatnks for the tip...The Village, gimme a break, DUMB!!!!!! The "I see dead poeople one" good, i think M. Night did that one anyway.
My 2¢

The i-phone rules. Steve Jobs will go down in history as the inventor of the greatest communication device of the early 21st century.
Steve Jobs didn't invent the iPhone...
Nah, that would be the Nokia 6310i.
And by 6310i I do of course mean the 6320i.
Carry on.
*Derek*
Right here is says he IS the inventor.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/30/the-iphone-patent-steven-p-jobs-inventor/
Derek he was one of the inventors lol.
Didn't Steve Jobs invent the internet? :)
No... that was Al Gore... an Apple boardmember... LOL
iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! iPhone! And .... iPhone! And just for the record I used cut and paste to write this post ... lets see the iPhone do that ....
Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers. Developers.
another one? what is this? apple.com? lay off it already! the piece of crap has 3g and nothing else new!
a-gps...
Nothing else new? Are you crazy? It's going to come with a white back. That alone will sell four million more iPhones this year. Son, that's innovation. Now every other company's smartphone is going to have a white back. All power to iPhone 3G. White back supremacy.
I can't wait! Less than a month away!!!!!!!
From the way you talk you sound about 12, so i guess no matter how much i call you out on being an idiot you will just never get it. I can tell you are just back peddling now, cause in other post you said you liked the iPhone, but now you are saying it sucks because its tied to one carrier. Oh, and if you haven't already guessed i have an iPhone stupid, sheesh.
Ooh! Apple post!
I miss Clak.
Haven't you heard? Clack and iEye died XD
Who determined their fate? Is Engadget a communist society?
No, he just said he would go away forever if someone admitted that windows and bill gates sucks. So I said that and I haven't seen him after that.
Or engadget could just have banned him.
Ryan Block really is very excited with the 3g iPhone. We all know its great, just keep your emotions for yourself, seems that Engadget is like an apple site. I hate this Apple iPhone excitement, just shut it off.
..or you could just not read the post, even better dont read engadget, you whiney tool.
Yes, please keep your emotions to yourself Ryan! Luigi has enough of his own to deal with because...
"[life] suffocating me, grabbing a hold of me and tightening its grip, tighter than a pair of my little sisters jeans...which look great on me by the way."
The german article in short:
The price for the iPhone in Germany will depend on which of the 24-month contracts the buyer choses and will be between 1€ (89€/month complete XL) and 169€ (29€/month complete S).
So how about some news on the Sony Experia?
How about some news about anything ? This is not iPhone news this is old crap spewed out again.
I love all the talk of PA Semi making new jesusphone chips, do any Apple lovers out there even know what PA Semi makes ? (Do you Ryan ?)
Power PC based low power server chips, mostly for the US Military.
So I'll certainly wait until their "cutting edge" mobile processors arrive to shout about them, by that time VIA, Intel, Nvidia and Samsung should be making some nice devices.
now that is a sweet looking phone. i cant wait to get my hands on it. of course, i know so little about it because no one will talk about anything but the iphone
You mean the Sony Ericsson Xperia?
Speak for yourself. I love the iPhone. I believe the many articles about the iPhone is related to the many people interested in it...
Can we consolidate the articles because the iHype is kind of wearing a bit thin these days?
I think they consolidated 4 articles into one here...
I'm going to try and be the first person arrested on July 11 for trying to leave the store without activating my iPhone.
Seriously though, what can they do??? "Sir...SIR... You cannot leave the store with that phone you just purchased!! SIR!!"
I doubt they will charge your card until the contract is signed, so you'll likely be arrested for shoplifting.
If they were to let you purchase the phone, then try to get you to sign a contract, well, then they're not too bright.
An Apple a day...
The real goodies will come with the 2.0 software and all iPhone users will get that. It was already pretty damn awesome. I'll "suffer" with EDGE for a while longer. Maybe 2.5 or 3.0 will have enough to get me to upgrade. How about 32GB+ of storage? That would just about make it worth it to me.
Who gives a flying f*ck about visual voice mail or voice mail in common? I guess it's again US living in '98 with it's mobile phones.
Um... people that miss calls?
Trolls love spam: fourthletter@gmail.com
you've exceed your bitch-per-article quota
So what are you going to do about it ?
point out that you're a douche? wait, already did that
Oh that hurts.....oh no wait it doesn't.
hey, at least you're comfortable with it. douchebags with high self-esteem can still have positive rolls in society
You could start sending me your newsletter sound interesting............
i'm flattered, but i don't think i could help you become any more of a douche
haha...let's not drag nationalism into this. if you have something constructive to say, then say it. if funny, then say that. making fun of Ryan Block's name makes you look 9 years old; but your grammar's too good for that. only possibility left is a raging douche i'm afraid. if it makes you feel better i can call you "wanker" instead. more british.
I thought Trolls liked having a pencil jammed up their rear...
And this new iPhone is going to be boss.
about time. video playlists and landscape orientation ftw.
unless "new video features" includes .mkv support; not interested.
on second thought, I'm with David Lynch; watching movies on phones is lame
Yes and watching HD files would be really pointless.....
it'll happen when Unicorns roam the prairies
I AM A BIT OF A SMART/CELL PHONE JUNKY.....WHEN A NEW ...SMART/CELL PHONE COMES OUT....I BUY IT, WHEN IT HITS THE BAY....JUST TO CHECK IT OUT......AND THAN RE-SELL THEM ON THE BAY, IF I DON'T LIKE THEM....MOST AT BRAKE EVEN, OR A PROFIT.....THANK GOD FOR THE BAY FOR US JUNKYS, OR WE WOULD HAVE A ROOM FULL OF SMART PHONES.........NOTE: I STILL HAVE MY 4GB, AND 16GB iPHONES....AND WILL BUY THE FIRST...UNLOCKED....3G LISTING THAT I SEE ON THE BAY.....THAT THE E-BAY POLICE LEAVES RUNNING FOR OVER 1 HOUR.......THANKS engadget.com FOR THE GREAT iPHONE UPDATES......(NOW I MAY JUST NEED TO GO STAND LINE) KEEP THAT INFO COMING FOR US JUNKES
ENOUGH SAID.....
OH MY GOD CAPS LOCK EATS YOUR FACE!
three replies in one post ? not me I just bitch an go
apparently not...
I'll just be glad when they include CUT and PASTE. WTF, why is cut and paste still not in the iphone?
Does it have a touchscreen?
If not, I don't want.
So Apple ditch Power PC for Intel for economy of scale reasons and then decide to build their own mobile chips?
That sounds like some crazy logic to me.
They are probably looking to integrate several of the chips onto one chip. Plus it would be cheaper to make then buying lets guess, 8 - 10 chips, to design just one of your own.
PA Semi specialized in system on chip, if they could get the main processor, the H.264 decoder, blue tooth, wifi, cell transmitter chip etc etc all on one chip it would make for a smaller phone which other would find harder to emulate.
As for PPC to Intel it was not about reducing the number of chips or really economy of scale. PPC chips were running hot, and if what apple say is true expensive to buy they couldn't make viable laptops with the G5s in them.
TI, Qualcomm et al already make system on a chip designs for mobile devices. And can probably make them cheaper.
And WM device is capable of doing that.
Using my HTC to do that right now, and it runs circles around the iPhone in terms of capabilities and network speed in my city.
Oh, and it only costs me $49 / month for UNLIMITED data + all of my regular voice plan options using Sprint SERO and EVDO Rev-A.
That's great if you can get it. In my area Sprint coverage is horrible so it wouldn't matter how cheap it is.
Hamidxa,
I wish I lived where you live. I live in Canada... It hurts my brain to even imagine that a plan that reasonable even EXISTS!
Why oh Why does the iPhone warrant all this coverage?? Seriously...its a phone. I hate to say it, Engadget, but you're letting your fanboy show.
Here's some eight turgid inches of fanboyism for you, my friend. Make believe it's your favorite smartphone.
Yeah I thought engadget had a mobile sister site.
If you DON'T love Apple, you must be a fanboy.
iPhone brings traffic; traffic brings money. It's more business than fanboyness, I'm betting.
i was wondering how many texts the iphone can hold ?
If I remember correctly they remove the upper limit a few software updates ago but it was 1000.
Sadly you can't delete one by one, but only by conversation. So if you sent and received 100 messages between you and person X, that counts as one conversation, then you must delete (clear the conversation) all 100 or... none what so ever, leaving all 100. Rather crap.
OMG... I was trying to be a funny guy. Ryan Block had a comment which said "Test" and I answered with "Fail" .... now my comment is below johnsonn.... Ryan is playing games! :p
it can hold hundreds. I went like 3 mo the without deleting and I send hundreds a day it seems. BTW I sent this from my iPhone
This goes to everyone, and not just Das Boot: find something better to do than to start bitching whenever you spot an iPhone article. Seriously, god forbid we publish something about the one gadget right now that draws more consumer interest than any other.
If you are at any point thinking about whining about iPhone articles or making another clichd comment like "You should rename Engadget iGadget / iPhonegadget / Applegadget / etc. / ZOMG BIAS!!!!" then simply go away. It's old, it's boring, and you're just not adding anything of value to the conversation.
This phone still cant do MMS and that makes me a SAD panda
xDD I really appreciate the South Park reference.
*votes up*
So with all the daily hype about this phone it currently cant play videos in landscape mode? This is the device people at engadget and other isheep have been adoring all year? Truly sad, the world is filled with complete morons.
It has always played video in landscape. It currently does not play video in portrait.
Nice. We have a fact-checker in the audience.
C'mon, Ryan, you've gotta admit that some of those proposed renaming of this site are pretty funny. I mean, ZOMG BIAS!!!! is pretty funny.
AND if these people don't stop their Apple-Engadget luuuv witch hunt, then that means people will stop flaming them. And I, for one, look forward to people's creative insults. It completely adds to the conversation.
@ derX
Sorry, Ryan is right. I agree that some of the comments are funny and in fact that's a lot of why I read through them but it's just gotten old and there just doesn't seem to be any creativity or humor in it anymore. I'll be anxiously awaiting a good zinger but rehashing the same tired nastiness is just taxing. How about some fresh talent up in here?
People want iPhone information or Engadget wouldn't be posting it. It's just good business sense. Give the guys a break.
My frack'n godsness! This is like the 100th unnessisary flame from someone who has purchased all but one of the many zunes that microsoft flames have been sold despite the FACT that I've NEVER seen one in public out side of walmart while I've seen iPhones absolutly EVERYWHERE owned by people who are interested articals such as this one.
Can someone please give me 10 reasons why a smart 21st century consumer would want to buy this new iPhone? Ok screw 10 reasons, someone give me one good reason. Also please be considerate and give a thoughtful response.
B/c honestly dude, why would a graduating senior(goin to college) want to buy this rather than getting the current iPhone. 3G isnt sufficient b/c theres decent 3G phones in the market.
Im not gonna beat around the bush, I anticipated for a new iPhone and didnt expect it to come out so soon.
Also, ofcourse Im interestd in the new phone and the admirable price its gonna drop for. If I can save myself from just giving apple $ for w/e they put out then thats $ in my pockets.
It would've been sweet if a little qwetry board popped out but if its gonna run smoothe and not besatly feast on batteries then IM GETTIN IT.
I could give you way more than ten reasons why I like iPhone but honestly, I can't give you ten reasons why I personally would upgrade to the new iPhone. The only thing I'm really interested in from the 2.0 iPhone is 3G and it really isn't enough for me to commit to the new pricing and a new contract. If I hadn't already bought the iPhone 1.0 I would be very interested in the 2.0.
Oh, and while I do believe that a pop out keyboard is superior in operation to the soft keyboard in the iPhone, personally, I wouldn't want it to be thicker which I am certain it would be with a slide out. I don't use the keyboard enough for a slide out to be worth it for me.
I have a $15 phone with prepaid virgin mobile service. It works fine. It's 3G and get's the job done. I guess I don't have a need for anything more. My work pays for my other phone, and they get pissy if I use it outside of the plant. It's one of those cute little chirp chirp Nextells.
Can anyone please tell me if the 3G iPhone has bluetooth or not?
