HP's Handheld sp300 All-in-One scanner/printer brings cyborg revolution to warehouses everywhere
As managers race to turn their warehouse workers into cyborgs, HP is there to help with its Handheld sp400 All-in-One scanner / paperless printer of arm-mounted doom. This strap-on contraption is a wireless scanner / printer / barcode manager that turns warehouse drones into human intake and inventory machines. To be fair, the sp400 does have some benefits, like not requiring thermal labels and a reduction in paper waste with its built-in document imprinting function. Most importantly, though, be sure to see the video at the read link -- you'll be wishing you too could work in such an efficient warehouse!

You really have to wonder why these companies want their customers to be the last of the geek race. Making us look as dorky as possible to ensure we don't procreate may not hurt your current sales but what about 10 or 20 years from now? If we don't produce the next crop of geeks, where's your company profits then?
Good god. Inform the masses!
We need mandatory showings of Revenge of the Nerds to instill confidence and boneration. TO THE SEGWAY GARAGE.
Flame me for my Segway bashing, but love me because I makes you laff.
and that was your daily S&M, by Stuart Bohsocks
Geeks ≠ nerds, and geeks won't watch that crap I'm sure
well at least you get to be on the "away" team.
Comes with optional jet pack.
Wow, what happened to those crazy looking Palm inventory tracker ones? Can't they build one with a camera/printer on it? This HP one is fugly
Resistance is Futile.
actually borg might reject this design, they care about appearance too you know..
I wonder how efficient it is...
It's a "printer" that saves your documents to a file.
Now, why you want that instead of just hitting "save" I dono...
Works like this:

ha... i never knew that Preview for OSX was a 'paperless printer'
To Infinity- And Beyond!
Off Topic:
This has to be the first Engadget article with no links to other articles or websites.
Looks so plain...
not really off topic.
but this is: so you're back to "lowest"? i see they brought back 'highest' but not "lowest" that i can tell???
The way I intend to find out is by posting an obligatory "FIRST!" post followed by remarks about the ability to play games and blend. Then we will surely know.
wait.... it scans stuff and then "prints" it to file? and they call it a scanner/printer?
then what does a scanner without the printer do?
Prints on the package by rolling over it.
Ugh.... at least hire someone from a decent SFX department for deisgn! Move the battery pack (at least that is what I am assuming the part in the case is) under the forearm and place the actual unit above it, behind the hand. You have full use of your hand AND can just point your arm with hand bent down to use the scanner.
Sheesh.
my god that thing is enormous! we had ring scanners at fedex and they were just that...a very small barcode scanner on the your ring finger about the size of a chalk block used at pool halls, and a very small mini computer/display on your wrist that told you if the item was scanned or not...etc. they were phased out a while ago though
It's a scanner AND printer, hence the size I guess.
I for one welcome my hand scanning overlords.
on your fingers, that's lame!
I want it entirely wrist mounted, and make it shoot mini-CDs
what was wrong with regular barcode scanners?
This device prints straight on the packaging, hence the 'paperless', I quote:
3. Roll device across package to apply a fast-drying, smudge-free non-toxic image (.53 x 2 inches).
(Oh and you can install a print-to-file driver in windows too, it's included with the OS, just to inform you about the other camp )
pew pew
We tested this at my UPS center and its half as fast as a thermal printer ,slowing everything down. It also prints labels very small in magenta which is very hard to read on any package. The single device cost just under $3000 which is barely cost effective. Maybe it can provide better use in "slower" warehouses.
How can swiping this across a box be slower than printing a thermal label, peeling it off, and slapping it on a box? I saw this at a tradeshow and it is indeed quite fast. The printouts are visible enough, but the red color is no good for barcode use.
I can't imagine UPS using these things, and not getting an ROI out of them. Gas is too expensive for that!
watch someone figure out a way to use that to cheat on really important exams.
This thing is huge actually... but it has a printer. If you just want the barcode scanning capability with wireless (bluetooth) connectivity have a look at this.

Has been around for about 2 years now or so. Basically HP added a printer, did what it is good at.
Where's the accompanying VR headset?
Is anyone aware of portable scanning and label printing solutions, ideally in a single unit or units not coupled with blue tooth?
