NVIDIA unearths GTX 280 and GTX 260 graphics cards
Surprise! NVIDIA has officially unleashed its new GeForce GTX 280 and GTX 260 graphics cards. The GTX 280, NVIDIA's flagship model, is reportedly 50% faster than last year's 8800 GX2 when in its overclocked AMP! Edition, and it is loaded with around twice as many transistors as the 9800. The new single-chip processor packs some serious number crunching, such as a 142 GB/s memory bandwidth with a 512-bit memory interface. Other final specs look to include 1GB GDDR3 memory, two Dual Link DVI connectors, and, of course, an overclocked chipset. In short, it's the fastest graphics card you can get. Don't go nuts just yet, though -- the GTX280 with 1GB of RAM will run you a cool $649. The lower-end GTX 260 with 896MB is a more palatable $399. GTX280 availability starts tomorrow, and GTX 260s will hit the streets on June 26. And to finally put this joke to rest: Yes, they will run Crysis.

I have been a system builder since 386/486 days and my general rule of thumb still holds true. If new a card takes up 2 slots (PCI/AGP/PCIE/ETC) then it is not a mature enough technology and is not worth it. SLi was a joke the first time through, and I couldn't believe they brought it back to fail again.
If it takes $400+, 2+ slots, a dedicated power supply, and water cooling... then it is never going to be mainstream and never more than an "ultra-high" check box in games for the few who can run it.
@albtms
The circuit breakers in my (old) house have a hard time with SLI and a 600watt PSU. When I saw this I was thinking you'd have to have an air conditioner in the same room to game for any amount of time. For those of you that don't have central air, its crazy how much heat new gaming systems put out.
Like the 2nd post mentioned, this would deffinitely reduce your heating bills.
Much more detail and benchmarks/testing here:

Direct X 10.1 does not offer anything related into gaming... it's more for CAD and stuff like that... And anything that Direct X10.1 (which is like 3-4 features) can be done with the video card alone, even a Geforce 8800 can do it.
Double post, ignore above.
Hawt Sex!
I want.
I really want.
Finally, I CAN PLAY CRYSIS!
Man i would love to see what these 3 card in sli could do with Gelato and quad core onboard if possible. Enough GPU/cpu power to render some heavy scenes in maya.
the only question i need to have answered is:
will it blend?
Why would anyone want these when the ATI 3870's just came out for the Mac.
:D o.k. i can't say that with a straight face
What the hell are you some of you guys on about?
Have you all been living under a rock for the last 1+ year?
Have you even taken a look at the recent video card prices aside from the most bleeding, cutting-edge, units (which in this particular case have yet to even hit the store shelves yet)?
8800 GT's and 8800 GTS G92 cards can be had for ~ $179 range (depending on where you look).
Radeon 3870's can be had for as little as $150.
Each one of those respective video cards would run circles around either of the consoles, be it the X360 or the PS3.
In every single cross platform game released in the last 1+ year, an 8800 GTS for < $200 (depending on where you look once again) will offer you often a vastly superior experience:
2-3 times the resolution
2-3 times the AA
2-3 times the AF
More often than not 2 times the framerates, which are not relegated to 30FPS with countless dips as in console titles.
All of that for any one of the respective cards above at approximately HALF the price of either console.
I can build an entire gaming system (and did actually just a month ago for a friend) that would mop the floor with the PS3/X360 for a hair over $400 (not counting monitor there), but of course it would also allow you to work on any number of levels -- graphics design, office apps, web design, anything multimedia related, anything work-related, on top of playing games for slightly more.
This notion that PC's are overpriced hasn't been valid for some time now.
Get with the times, consoles are already outdated, overmatched, and turning the lowest common denominator.
This was true in the case of any multi-platform title launched in the last year, save for EA sports titles.
But can it run Oregon Trail?
I don't know about the rest of you guys, but I actually use the bottom HALF of my motherboard. It is useful for pluging in Hard drives, USB headers, other expansion cards like my TV tuner. I also appreciate the use of the reset jumper and error code displays on my board.
It won't play Crysis if I can't plug the HDD that it was installed on. Both Nvidia and ATI need to work on shrinking their cards down in size before motherboards have the be increased in size.

Holy CRAP!
I just bought an 8800GT, like, 4 days ago.
Zeus is angry with me.
Think I should return it?
8800GT = $179
GTX 280 = $649
GTX 260 = $399
If you have the money, then return it and buy the 260 instead.
