This laptop was made upside down; looks top-heavy.
Did I just call it a laptop?
You'll burn in hell for that...
Nice device. I thought very seriously about getting it, but the word is that the video drivers do not make use of the graphics chip, and so video performance is actually worse than for an old Dell Axim or Ipaq 4700 or 210.
HTC apparently doesn't think this is a problem.
Too bad. Waste of a great screen and an ideally sized device.
Don't worry, I'm sure after months of users complaining they will devise a software solution to improve performance without actually releasing a driver.

with double the remedy
Looks really nice, but again price is pretty steep
Waaay too steep. At $1,300 your better off getting a refurbished Oqo 2 from Oqo themselves.. of even a eee pc 7 inch series. At least you'll get a whole OS instead of winmo. Not that I hate it winmo or anythining its just at 1,300 theres a lot of better options or ultramobile pcs to choose from.
I had a loaner OQO 02 for a while and, having given it back, have to decide whether to buy one. I might prefer the 7510 at the same price. XP is sooo not designed to be whipped out of your pocket and used while you're standing in line at the airport. The five-second wake-up from suspend seems like forever when someone is waiting for an answer. Battery life is so limited I have to be careful about when to use it. The fan is so loud that I find everyone staring at me when I just want to google some quick info.
Of course, it all depends on use. If I wanted a machine I could sit down with in a temp office while visiting a client, oqo would rule. It's really more the frequent brief things that I could almost do with a cell phone but need a bigger screen that spark my interest in the 7510. The built-in GPS is nice, too, but the large screen and the VGA out are the two things no cell phone can match. The instant response is the thing no OQO / Netbook / UMPC can match.
shitttt that the price of 2 cheap computers... or at leat one. What can it really do thats worth that much?
Learn spelling and grammar....for all of our sakes!
Say what?
I'd rather get a netbook.
Most will, or an HTC Raphael anyway....
"I'd rather get a netbook"
For $1,300, I'd rather get 3...
Way over priced, in the UK for another £100 you can get the HTC Shift a no brainer really
This thing is a joke. $1300??? No thanks.
Absolutely brilliant device.
Price is a deal breaker though, at least for me.
I'm sure some of our resident millionaires wouldn't mind paying that much for it though. :)
One of my very wealthy customers ordered this device on my recommendation and I got to play with it for a few days before he picked it up and left for his annual trip around the world. (He loves the device btw).
This PDA is really awesome, the screen and ergonomics of it are just perfect for what its intended for. Even a 3.5" screen is too small for touching and other things.
The 5" screen is perfect for Windows Mobile & Internet functions (Opera Mobile 9.5), the magnetic keyboard is pretty slick too and works pretty well. The device is thin and everything is just awesome. It only has a few problems.
1: The device is also a phone, it is speakerphone only. You better like bluetooth headsets because that is all you are going to use. My customer has a different phone he carries around, he was using a Universal before but not as a phone, just PDA.
2: The thing is just slightly tall/wide to fit into any pockets (shirt pocket, front pant pockets) so you need a holster to carry this, which is slightly annoying.
Now, it is expensive, but why would you want it over a laptop?
Battery life. This is a PDA so your battery life is stellar. I have a 12" tablet with a 13 hour battery life and it wouldn't be able to touch the Advantage.
Although all your points do make perfect sense as I would use this over Oqo or laptop, but the price point is a just too huge of a problem. The markup on this is just waaay too high to really compliment all of its features. Even the recently released diamond is not that much.
A price of around $1,000 at least would be much more appealing and yet still I wish it was around $850-$900. That price is just abusive.
i'm sorry did you say 13 hours where did you find that tablet?
I agree, I have the older X7501 version and what a great device.
The only big problem with it is the video performance, which wasn't improved by the 7510.
I have long ago dropped using the keyboard and without the leather case (included) it fits into my back jeans pocket nicely.
The price is horrid, but wait 6 months and it will go down under $1k.
I sure hope that BlackBerry makes a formfactor like this someday....
As soon as this (or any) formfactor gets a foothold in the marketplace, then competition and economies of scale will drive that price down.
lolz, Americans pay way to much for their gadgets!
I think we pay far less than most countries.
to ddub, u americans always keep thinking you have the greatest deals, pffft, rubbish, u pay twice what i pay
lol!!! plz let the americans have it first!!!
Huh, I guess you should be careful not to hit enter after clicking 'Add Your Comments'. Granted this wouldn't be such a problem if I could find the damn Edit or Delete button.....oh.....yeah.....now I remember....

might anyone know what engadget considers "minors" in the post b4 this about writing for engadget?
... below 18. Anyone that uses "b4" instead of before has no place writing for Engadget anyway.
uhh FYI.. excuse me.. for your information.. i write just fine! you really think id write like that on here? besides these guys posting here dont do much better. look at every other comment on here and thats how people post.
Anyone that complains about every little grammar mistake on here should be reading much less posting on the forums..

grr. I'm pissed off with that. I would be more than capable of doing 3 of those jobs... and NO, cos I'm 15. Hell.
Both of you are prime examples (along with legalities) of why engadget does not hire minors...Hell I'm 15 too and I'm ashamed.
im still loving my 5inch screen htc advantage, opera runs sweet on it, i use blue tooth for head phones and dont use the phone alot, videos mp3 , photos etc
i dont think i can give it up.
plus i synch it to work for my calender etc
So the advantage of this device over an EeePC for 299,00 plus an HSDPA dongle is what exactly?
Right, forgot the price is higher and it runs Windows Mobile...
I really like the design of HTC Advantage. It's detachable keyboard is a nice alternative to other laptop-esque designs, and means it is capable of tablet mode operation. What I don't like about the HTC Advantage is its small size (larger than a celphone or PDA, but smaller than a netbook), its underpowered processor, its Windows Mobile OS and its price.
I'll be really interested in it if they were to scale the design up a little so it will handle a 9" or 10" touchscreen and a larger keyboard; throw in an Intel Atom, a Via Nano or AMD Bobcat; get rid of WM6 (for XP or linux - it doesn't matter which); and cut the price to $1,000. I don't think I'd be the only one to want one then, and I suspect that it would be more appealing to corporate types than other netbooks (especially with it's tablet mode of operation).
Unfortunately HTC seem to think that the Advantage already fits the niche between cellphone and laptop markets, so they will be unlikely to release a netbook version of the Advantage design. It is a shame... maybe somone else will do it.
why would you hit enter after hitting add your comments?
it looks like it would fall backwards
ok, first the shift comes out without a phone and for WAY too much money, now the advantage has the phone, but not the processing power. HTC is THIS CLOSE (where's the typed symbol to show two fingers just barely not touching) to producing the product i want...but can't seem to squeeze it out. Guess i gotta wait for wimax or Lten....damn!
You can buy the HTC Advantage X7510 from Clove UK and they will ship it internationally. They use DHL, if you want it shipped to the US. The price is $940 including shipping. VAT does not apply in international buyers. So basically you get the X7510 for $900. Why the hell would I want to purchase the device from Expansys, Dynamism, or On The Go Solutions?
