HTC Touch Diamond surfaces at CompUSA
Oh, snap. Just the other day we were bemoaning the fact that the Touch Diamond sent to us courtesy of HTC lacked both HSDPA 850 / 1900 and GSM 850, but according to the product page at CompUSA, the version it's selling has all of those. Yep, a purported quad-band Touch Diamond is seemingly in stock right now for Americans willing to part with $779.99, but remember, all those bills nets you a 2.8-inch VGA display, HSDPA 7.2, Windows Mobile 6.1 and oodles of sexy. Go on, help HTC get one closer to two million this year.
[Thanks, Tom]
Update: Hey look, UKers can get in too. Just £463.99 including VAT. Thanks Leigh!
Update 2: For shame! HTC just pinged us and said this thing is the same as every other Touch Diamond, meaning that North American 3G is not supported.

Oodles of sexy....does it do hardware video acceleration? :)
Of course!*
*drivers for GPU 2D/3D acceleration not included.
You stole my name!!
Yes, it does, and yes, it does have the drivers.
It can do 7 million polygons/sec. Is that enough hardware acceleration for you?
If you look at the actual usage videos though it's still pretty slow...probably want to wait to see if people on xda-devs can make the response bearable before dropping 780 on it
From what I've seen the lagginess has nothing to do with the video drivers; the transitions are smooth and not lacking in frames per second. I think the laginess is coming from some other place in the implementation. The screen output is at the end of the chain of events that occur in the system so it is the "window" through which the lagginess is observed, but probably not the cause.
The compUsa's in NYC went out of business because of Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Micro Center and Circuit City.
The CompUSA's almost EVERYWHERE went out of business because of Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Micro Center and Circuit City.
The ALL went out of business.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/07/rip-compusa-1984-2008/
Then Tigerdirect purchased what was left of their assets.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/systemax-salvages-compusa-brand-website-and-up-to16-stores/
Then they reopened some stores in Florida.
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/24/compusa-rises-from-dead-attacks-florida/
They are now, basically, a storefront for Tigerdirect.
Which is SOOOO much better than what they once were. I went to one of the retail stores in florida and they had tons of refurb Cisco enterprise network hubs and switches for decent prices! It was sweet. Now if there was only a Micro Center or Fry's within 500 miles of me...
It really doesn't help their business when the new CompUSA catalogs just look identical to a Tigerdirect catalog, but with the word "COMPUSA" on the cover.
Still all the same cheap crap mixed in with a few things. Still no support for Apple products (which CompUSA at least did do). Still looks like a catalog put together by someone who flunked out of graphic design school.
The name doesn't change the fact that Tigerdirect sucks.

Not worth it. Better off waiting for the Pro version or even better hold off for the Dream version.
Im personally waiting for the Touch Pro version of this phone, which should hopefully be available for Sprint in a months.
Nevertheless, the Diamond is one sexy piece of hardware, and well worth the entry fee, although it would be prudent to get this with a contract for a subsidized price.
what? compUSA? you meen tigerdirect...right? ▌compUSA is gone right?
Actually, there is compusa store in Florida and Puerto Rico.
there is still one here in houston
$779.99 and everybody was griping about the iPhone price. What a bunch of hypocrites!
... you do realize that's $779 without a contract right?
hey at least the price isnt just to look pretty.
Can you at least know what you're talking about when you post a stupid comment? This is WITHOUT A CONTRACT. The iPhone's contract + the price of the iPhone would cost more than this phone.
"Can you at least know what you're talking about when you post a stupid comment? This is WITHOUT A CONTRACT. The iPhone's contract + the price of the iPhone would cost more than this phone."
Uhh, really?? I know everyone now is on the bash iPhone people bandwagon, but this is a STUPID statement. Carriers usually subsidize at between $5 and $10 per month of contract. So, lets assume $10. 2 year contract = $240. $199 + $240 = $439. $439 > $779.99??!?!?! NOT! (note that if you are going to retort by saying "I said the value of the CONTRACT" and say that it is something like $70 x 24 then you are even more lost in the head).
Look, I'm not getting an iPhone (not sure what I'm getting next). However, at $779, this is a RIDICULOUSLY overpriced phone, especially comparing this to what you could get from the competition. 3 years ago perhaps this price would have been mainstream for this level of technology (time adjusted), but now it is simply priced out of competition.
Even if this was a perfect iPhone 3G clone, anyone doubt that at $779.99 the take rate will be much lower than the iPhone? Let’s face it, we are addicted to the subsidy model. No one wants to come outa pocket for this kind a scratch, regardless of how “free to select you service provider” it allows. So stop with the white noise already. At 199/299 (subsidize) the damn thing (iPhone 3G) will sell like “hot cakes”...
PS Oh, yea save the “he’s an apple fanboy” breath. The only product I own from Apple is Quicktime ;^/...
This is meant for the european model of pricing. It's very different
that's one of the reason the iPhone didn't do nearly as well over here in the UK as Apple expected and wanted
that's with most phones, but with the iphone, you need the 70 dollars plan. i'd put that number closer to 20 dollars a month for the iphone.
"that's with most phones, but with the iphone, you need the 70 dollars plan. i'd put that number closer to 20 dollars a month for the iphone"
Wha? Again, misinformation. AT&T raised the unlimited data plan rate to $30 which just so happens to be exactly the same as it would be for THIS phone and any other smart (or even smartish) phone. It's $39.99 for the plan (minimum) and $30 for the data regardless of the smartphone. All they did was bring the phone up to parity with the others. Note that this is a decrease from the $39.99 they were charging this time last year for unlimited data.
Now if they'd just allow the iPhone to be unlocked (after 90 days like every other AT&T phone) so that I could take it with me to Europe and use prepaid SIM cards, I'd actually consider one...
$779 for the diamond, so the PRO is going to be, what $879 or $979? I would only pay $450 for the PRO...Be honest guys, $779 to way too much, even without contract.
The iPhone is $199 with subsidization. It was $399 WITHOUT subsidization. So yes, the iPhone is still about half as expensive as the Diamond.
Big amount of people are ready to buy phones unlocked in Europe so why wouldnt people in state side? You will get much more competition going... thought that might be pretty hard considering that almost all phones are bough from ATT. Example in Finland over 85% of phones are sold unlocked.
I agree that the phone price even unlocked and even to us perfect mobile phone users here in EU area ;D that price is a bit deep.
I do love thought how so many people here dont even understand the difference with contract and unlocked phone...not to even talk about that you can get that sim card out of the phone!
N95 was..what 650€ at the start, but it had features not seen before and was ahead for competiton for a year. So there that price was okish and you could have had that phone for free over a year with 2 years contract.
Funny how polarized people are by the iPhone. An obviously incorrect and terribly biased statement (the one I replied to) is "Highest Ranked" while mine (unbiased but defending the price superiority--not technical, price) of the iPhone is "Low Ranked." Illogical, but not surprising I suppose.
@Kiff, the difference here in the states is the lack of standardized bands. An unlocked phone here still locks you into one of two carriers (T-Mobile or AT&T). For Sprint and Verizon (and Alltel for until they are merged with Verizon), there's not even a concept of unlocking (well technically you can get CDMA phone reflashed and activated on another provider). Making matters worse is the contract structure for the carriers--i.e., the fact that you essentially can't get post-paid service without a contract unless you essentially buy out your contract up front (T-Mobile may be different, but AT&T works this way). Now with HSDPA bands getting fragmented, the situation will only continue to get worse. In the states, the FCC chose to let the competition occur at the carrier --> equipment provider level at the expense of competition at the consumer level.
Anyway, unlocked phones (or to be more specific, unsubsidized and contract-free phones) here won't improve competition much. They'll give AT&T and T-Mobile users better options when traveling overseas, but not much else.
I'm going to have to give a big 'So What' regarding this being unlocked. While this is definitely a positive, I see nothing about this device that justifies a $700+ price tag. Maybe it has a smaller radar cross-section due to the angular backplate, but that's nothing to write home about.
It's funny that people compound the cost of actually keeping an active service for the phone on top of the price as a negative towards the phone, and completely disregard the value of the service itself. Regardless of it being unlocked, unless you can find a free service to use this $779 device, you'll STILL be paying a good sum each month so that you can use its telephony features. All you're paying for is the extra freedom, but it's just a question of how much is that extra choice worth to you?
As mentioned above, the carrier subsidized version will be much more affordable. But really, this is not even an official US version. I seriously doubt the US version will retail for this much. This is a premium price for ultra early adopters looking for a European import.
Seems nuts to me though, I’d wait for the carrier subsidized version with proper US bands
fight! fight! fight!
So... The cool new thing on Engadget, Digg, and Gizmodo is calculating out what the price of the iPhone 3G + two years of service will cost, then comparing that to the price of whatever phone _you_ like more, but ignoring the fact that you have to pay for monthly service for THAT device too.
OK.
You have to pay for service, no matter which phone you use. The AT&T plans are right in line with any carrier that has 3G service and data plans... And this thing isn't even 3G in the states, so you better drag out all those complaints you had about Edge on the iPhone, because that's what's up with the Diamond.
This phone is going nowhere beyond a very select niche group at that price, with even Apple starting to use 3G.
i have not had one crash on vista ever. maybe im lucky but i wouldnt say macs are anybetter than pc's or pc's are better than a mac. if you think about every point everyone said on engadget in the past year its really even especially if your buying one for a certain reason... gaming(probly a pc) if your a artist(probly a mac) who cares when you cant argue anymore because one is so much better than talk to me.
And what does this have to do with the article?
fail.
Well mam00th, perhaps the writer thought that vista was related to windows mobile? And someone mentioned the iPhone so the mac/windows comparison...
no?
Damn. I tried.
CompUSA? I thought those guys were out of business. Why does it seem like phones a re quickly gearing towards the price of PC's and Notebooks. I don't get it. I would get the phone, but still that price is not justified if you ask me
Considering these phones are close to the same power of a netbook (or UMPC) but substantially smaller, i can easily see these prices.
They are essentially cramming a laptop into hand held device.
sure its almost worth it but look at the disadvantage we americans have, in most places there are only 2 major gsm networks to choose from and the diamond doen not support 3g on them anyways. I think we should get a discount of $50 - $100.
I want this, or the Nokia N95 8gb so bad, its far better than the iphone. But 700 dollars a very insane amount of money for a phone. Bring it down to 500 and we have a deal.
HTC Touch Diamond is aimed at the European market. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the price. The European cellphone market is different from the American one. We don't pay ridiculous fees for receiving messages and phone calls, so the cast majority of people in Europe walk around with pre-paid card.
Each cellphone on the market is available for purchase without a contract. Priced at $799 the phone is well in line with a high-end top of the line phone goes for here in Europe. For comparison the N95 was priced at around €800 when it came out. So there is nothing outrageous about this price. Here in Europe many people don't like getting tied down with contracts and simply buy an unlocked phone at it's full price.
People need to stop comparing this to the iPhone which comes with a compulsory 2 year contract, and is not available for purchase without a contract. In the long run a subsidized phone with a 2 year contract is more expensive than an unlocked phone with a pre-paid card, especially if you're bad at keeping track of how much you're calling for.
Welcome to Europe!
I'm personally waiting on the Experia....
I'm just also afraid that since it IS an HTC device, that it STILL won't have the drivers included...regardless of the panel interface that SE has.
All I can do is sit and wait...impatiently...
It has the drivers...
And so does this.
I'd recommend a Touch Pro, but it's your choice, they're both gonna be great.
What's a CompUSA?
Double click on "CompUSA", then right click on it, and then click on "Search Google for CompUSA. See how easy it is.
Oooooh. This CompUSA:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3905608&CatId=1809
I get it now. Thanks...
Why would I pay this kind of money for a phone when there is the promise of so many great options in a short period of time? I'll wait to see what happens when Android is released. It might be earthshaking or not, depending on how it works out, but I'd rather wait than kick myself later.
Also, while this looks great, for the money I'd rather go for an iphone, not that I'm a mac fan, but I'm not a MS fan either, and I can't imagine this being worth over $500 more (of course this is dependent on potential increased cost of service plan as well when it comes to the iphone).
Here's hoping for a good open source equivalent.
+1! bring on the competition!
Plus Mac OSX is really just a flavor of Linux...deep down inside, its wants to be open source.
@retro
OS X is not a flavor of Linux. Linux and OS X are both 'nix systems, but this does not make them the same.
Where is Ryan with some witty CompUSA remarks?
I live in Washington DC and have been using a Touch Diamond for a couple weeks now - a TRI-BAND Diamond. HTC announced that release in the US was still a few months away - and general UK shipments just started within the last week. There is NO WAY CompUSA has the line on Quad-banders and this is how we are finding out about it. It would be a huge deal if HTC had released them already.
Oh, and in the whole "extra cost of a subsidized phone across 2 years" argument, those are fees you're going to have to pay anyway - I consistently buy my phones from overseas just because they are better, and while I pay a lot more money for them, I'm not locked into the crappy choices the US carriers provide. But I'm still paying the x amount of dollars every month for the service.
You are not locked, but you are restricted. As Paul pointed out since different phone companies use different frequencies and technologies in the United States you are limited to using your phone on one of a few carriers. For GSM you only have two choices; AT&T and T-mobile. T-mobile is rolling out it's 3G network on a different frequency than AT&T which means that in the future if you want to use a 3G connection you will have to buy a phone that is designed to work for your 3G band.
Wow why CompUSA of all places?
I'll wait for my Pro so I can get some keyboard loving....
you know you want the keyboard.....its coming.... don't you worry..... soon.... don't be afraid.... you can press it's keys......
Has to be a typo - there no mention of a quad band Diamond on the HTC website also tri-band Diamonds went on sale in the UK today
I wouldn't waste my money on any WM phone now. Too slow and sluggish for a post-iPhone world, sorry. Until WM7 hits (or HTC says this phone will be WM7 upgradable), I'm turning my head to Android.
Just show us the freakin' Dream, a blurry screenshot, ANYTHING.
@tarex: Someone hasn't been looking at the vids. this thing is fluid.
That's putting a lot of faith in a product that we haven't even seen yet (other than controlled demos). Why do you assume that Android will be faster, feature rich, and stable?
You guys gotta be kidding. I saw almost every movie there was for the Diamond, including coolsmartphone's week with the Diamond (about 10 movies, 10 minutes each). This device is SLOW. You swipe your finger, then get an effect a second later. It's sluggish. The iPhone must be 2X, 3X faster.
As for Android, no assumptions there. If you saw the I/O conference movies, you'll know how fast and fluid it is. It is the only OS that rivals OS X (iPhone's) in terms of speedy and fluidity.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOSk9TW7z-4
The Diamond is a very classy and decent gadget, in build and design. I blame WM for making it look so unresponsive.
TareX
You must be watching different videos than the rest of us.
Hardware wise, this thing runs circles around an iPhone, and software wise, with cooked ROM's, it once again runs circles around an iPhone in terms of response times.
There's no comparison to be made with the inferior iPhone here, this is a sophisticated piece of hardware, whereas the iPhone is a toy by comparison.
The hardware is superior of course, that is because WM is very demanding. Now as regards "running circles" around the iPhone, have you used one before? You touch the screen and start swiping, and as you swipe, you see an immediate movement in the screen. Now with the Diamond, it is VERY lagging. The "Contacts" menu is a pain, and the messages application takes a while to respond to swipes. And this is all before loading the device.
The iPhone could be a toy. OK it is a toy. But I wouldn't compare its fluidity to the Diamond.
Diamond is very fluid and fast if you compare it to other WM phones. But no way is it faster than the iPhone, sorry. I'm not talking functionality or toy/serious device here. I'm just saying it's no where near as fluid as the iPhone.
Maybe you have a video with a faster UI? Plz show it to me, because I was looking forward to TouchFLO3D but was extremely disappointed by the response time. Plz show me the video showing that fluid UI on the Diamond. I want to believe you.
@Hamidxa,
What exactly makes this phone superior hardware-wise? How does it run circles around it, when the processor speed of the iPhone is 620MHz as opposed to the HTC Diamond's 528? Where is this superiority in the hardware? The HTC brand?
LOL 620? ... mate get your facts straight. The iphone is capped at 500.
The battery wont last for shit on 620. Now look again and tell me what the battery on the xperia is and come back with a valid argument.
And no .. chances are that apple will not up the clock speed because the battery wont last .. especially with 3g now.
...thump.......
WHY did they have to make the screen 2.8? if it were 3.5 like the iphone I would definitely think about it, but its just too small.
thats what the HTC Dream is for.
"Update 2: For shame! HTC just pinged us and said this thing is the same as every other Touch Diamond, meaning that North American 3G is not supported."
For fail CompUSA!
I saw this phone at a store recently and fell in love with it. It will probably be my next upgrade once the true USA quad-band version comes out (which is supposed to be in a few months).
I HIGHLY doubt this is the upcoming quad-band version, and I HIGHLY doubt CompUSA would get exclusive first dibs. Neither HTC nor Expansys are selling a quad-band.
On a related noted, I checked the HTC Diamond forum on Expansys, and a rep says there are no plans for a US quad-band version. I'm a little confused by this based on what I've heard, but I hope it's not true.
Since the phone is apparently coming exclusively(?) to Sprint, it's very likely the US version will be CDMA/EVDO Rev.A only. Personally, I'd prefer a larger screen and capacitive touch. The larger screen is a pipe dream, I know, but the capacitive touch could make or break the deal for me - assuming I'm still with Sprint when the phone eventually lands (and assuming Sprint doesn't cockblock Sero users like they are with the Instinct).
No... there are CDMA and GSM versions...
In Finland you can get that phone from Saunalahti for 552 euros
TareX
The lag has been fixed, you're perpetuating outdated FUD.
compUSA still exists?
It's just way too expensive and I don't care if you can choose any carrier. The days of paying this much for a phone should be long gone.
Lets hope the UI doesn't lag as badly as it did in the video engadget had of the pre-production models..
It lags just the same, in every review on every site. It's justa fact of life with WM.
Very decent hardware, though.
Thats been fixed, according to http://www.theunwired.net/?item=snappiness-htc-fine-tune-touchflo-3d-for-better-performance
TareX
The lag has been fixed, you're perpetuating outdated FUD.
anyone who buys this phone (great phone) w/ this particular hardware iteration (no quad band support) and is planning to use this in NA, is either...not aware of the non quad band support, or simply an idiot. wait for the proper NA version w/ the proper radio hardware to come out
I don't understand why its not quad band from the get go when the Tytn 2 was
ummm...cause the tytn ii/kaiser/tilt was released in NA as a north american phone, not as a euroasian phone which was imported into NA
CompUSA just updated their web site... it was a typo... the phone is only tri-band... not quad-band ;(
The only times I've heard mention of Quad-band have been people wishing for things. There's no evidence supporting this phone will officially be released as Quad-band ever.
(That being said, some of the guys at XDA believe the hardware is there, just not the software, and that could potentially be remedied. But again, nothing concrete)
I`m still waiting for the Touch Pro or the version with Android, if there is one. :)
THREE THINGS THAT MAKE ME NOT WANT THIS PHONE:
1. Microsoft logo
2. $799
3. compusa
can we add any more negative stuff.
Here's the deal on the radios on board the HTC Touch Diamond. It has all the bands for US and Europe, including 2g and 3g. It is being shipped as the European version but a setting in WinMo 6.1 can switch the US settings on and disable the European settings. The exact same phone will be shipped to the US latter this year with it defaulting to the US bands.
Maybe that phone will be minus the front camera? This one has a front camera. I found it around Chicago for $678.99. I have no affiliation with the seller but if you want their number email me as I will not give them FREE advertising.
does a quad-band radio really cost that much more??
i mean this is the first htc device i've seen in a while with only the european tri-band. usually they all have atleast quadband, if not tri-band umts/hsdpa as well.
I'm not really a fan. TouchFlo is nice (abit chuggy in places, but its a phone so..), but there are still sections which are all old school Windows Mobile and it kinda ruins the awesome experience your having. Unless they make some improvements before releasing the Touch Pro, I'll probably just go the iPhone.
The poor Xperia is just getting its ass completely kicked atm. :p
What do you mean its getting its ass kicked?
Havent you heard the rumor .. or more the fact that the new Xperia ROM build has a TouchFLO folder!
Apparently it will have TouchFLO 3D but Sony Ericsson style.
TouchFLO != TouchFLO 3D
My kaiser has TouchFLO, but that's application independent touch scrolling. That'll be what's on the Xperia
If the Xperia ends up being this expensive, I'm fooked!
I really -REALLY- don't want an iPhone... but, at $700+, AND a service contract of some sort with Tmobile or AT&T... no f'n way.. can't do it... nope.
$400-$500 max.
North American comms f'n suck... bah... we need to switch to Europes system of pre-paid+unlocked... THEN I might pay more.. otherwise, no way.
the xperia/diamond/touch pro will not be this expensive as compared to the iphone. the iphone is on CONTRACT. wait to fine a carrier that will carry these phones on contract. voila
Lots of people are tossing inaccurate service pricing around. Here's some ACCURATE info.
In the US AT&T is the only carrier of the iPhone. To get the upcoming one, you must have at least a $40 service plan PLUS a $30 data plan PER month for TWO years. That's $199.00 for the hardware and $70 for service. Not counting the extra $10-15 in taxes, FCC fees, etc.
Now, the Diamond is coming to Sprint at the same price point that my HTC Touch is at. Here's the deal though. Sprint will likely sell the Diamond as they do every one of their phones. $150.00 off (should leave the phone at $249-$299) with a two year contract of a

So, if you look, over two years the new iPhone's TCO will be roughly $1879.00 not counting vague extra required fees/taxes.
The two year TCO of the Diamond will be roughly $1689-$1739. This is less than the TCO of the iPhone.
One last thing. The data plan for the iphone is not as inclusive as Sprint's. The $30 Sprint plan has unlimited data, txt, email, hosted exchange server (not just connecting to YOUR business's server, Sprint will provide you with an exchange account), WM6 allows for 6 total configured email accounts (gmail, yahoo, personal, etc.) with push/pull, unlimited TV and music, FULL unlimited GPS. Plus I have insurance ($4.99) incase I break my phone.
The new iphone will only include 200 txts, AT&T caps data limits at about 5GB/month before pushing for a change to the business plan. No TV, music, GPS (that I've heard so far), multiple email accounts.
So, now tell me which one has a lower TCO.
Hmm, somethings going on. Hopefully this isn't triple posted..
