Thanks to an
overzealous e-tailer, we already knew that Sammy's Spinpoint M6 was ready to be ordered en masse, but Samsung has finally put out some official verbiage to substantiate the obvious. The outfit's 500GB
Spinpoint M6 ($299) and 250GB
Spinpoint MP2 ($199) are both shipping as we speak, and that curious sound you hear over there is your current laptop begging for a storage upgrade. On a slightly related note, the company is also announcing that its 7200RPM
Spinpoint F1 RAID-class (F1R; pictured) 3.5-inch SATA drive has hit mass production, meaning that you can bulk up your enterprise storage solution 1TB at a time for $299 each.

I'm still wondering when drives with a higher capacity than 1TB are coming.
Me too, What the hell is the hold up, There is already 500GB notebook drives surely they can fit 4 times that in a 3.5" drive...
Also the F1 currently has 3 x 334GB platters so why not stick 5 platters in a drive :/
2TB drives would be sweet.
heard samsung's preparing 1.5T for the 3Q this year.
HD makers are shifting attention to notebook drives and the low cost market. High-end desktops are becoming ever more of a niche.
At least that's what I think, but then I haven't owned a desktop in nearly 10 years. It is pretty clear however that the big manufacturers are putting more and more resources in the 2.5" form factor.
A high end desktop is good for? Gaming - a niche, but still way bigger than other applications for high end desktops + large HDs: Scientists, and professional video producers, maybe graphics designers and sound artists.
*Test*
Now now, no need to get testy

500 GB in my laptop...that is a lot of portable porn....
Not very viewable publicly. Reminds me of the time I watched Jackass on the train - got far to many funny looks .
My point exactly. I'm glad someone agrees.
And who the hell has 500GB's of porn, haha.
you have obviously not been on a university's fileshare hub
Me! I love the porno!
Y'all can drool all you want over solid-state drives.... give me ginormous capacity on my laptop any day of the week.
but the drool will short them out
samsung are screwing up their production big time, they cant meet demand for their samsung f1 pc drives partly due to a large OEM order they took recently. Also they havent shipped 320gb f1 drive to uk ppl as they are waiting for the older 320gb's to sell out first which isnt going to happen as they are much slower and everyone knows that.
the 640gb samsung is out of stock alot of the time, they need to become a mass production company for hdds like wd and seagate as they cannot meet the demand.
how are 500 GB drives priced the same as RAID 1 TB drives?
and a 3.5 in SATA is not out of the question for say a gaming laptop or a "moble desktop", so are they putting that 1 TB drive in a 17 or 20 incher any time soon?
or does it use too much power?......
Since when is 7200 rpm SATA considered RAID class? Maybe they mean home RAID?
300$???? Are you nutz? I picked up 2 F1s this weekend for 160$ each.
Now I need a few more!
These'll work with the ps3, right?
Why the hell would I care if "mass production was announced"?
Where can I buy it and when, that's what I want to know. I checked a few etailers, and, as expected, these are nowhere to be seen.
check www.memoryexpress.com - all prices in canadian, and yes, they do do mail order.
[comment system flakey, trying again]
I was looking for the 500GB M6 2.5" laptop drive. The site you mentioned doesn't have it.
You can get the M6 in an enclosure at OtherWorldComputing.com -- Samsung wouldn't let them sell it on its own.
But I wouldn't bother. That's about 40% more than it's worth at this point, looking at the price of 320GB drives.
Lets get technical about this ,Samsung drives suck,WD drives dont !

I almost got the M6, but $300 is a bitter pill to swallow when I was able to get a 320GB Western Digital My Passport for $135 and just pull the 2.5" 320GB WD drive out of it to put it in my MacBook, and then I put my old 250GB WD drive into the enclosure.
For less than half of the price of the M6, I got a sweet, compact USB-powered enclosure and a 320GB drive, totaling my drive space at 570GB.
320GB on-board is certainly enough until Samsung drops the price of the M6, or until some other company gets a 2.5" half-terabyte drive on the market at a reasonable price.
Side note: The drive I pulled out of the My Passport sells for $179 by itself in Best Buy, but the My Passport sold for $135 (or close to it). More stuff for a lower price! Yay!
My advice is to wait until the 500GB drives are cheaper.
