Dell's new UltraSharp 2709W 27-inch LCD
Dell just busted out a new member in its storied line of LCDs, the UltraSharp 2709W. The 27-inch LCD is Dell's followup to the 2707WFP, and features the same 1920 x 1200 resolution, 9-in-2 media card reader and 6ms response time, but bumps the contrast ratio to 3000:1 and goes for some new all-black stylings. Brightness is a mean 450 nits, but the real fun comes with ports: Dell squeezed just about everything known to man in here, including HDMI, DVI-D, VGA, component, composite, and DisplayPort. There's also a nice collection of USB ports, plus HDCP for good measure. With a three year warranty the display sells for $999, quite the steal compared to the 2707WFP's intro price of $1,400 last year.

Wow, so the same amount of pixels as a 24" in a screen 3 inches bigger *Slow Claps*
Yeah, kinda lame. For $700 maybe, but the original price of $1400 was totally unrealistic when the 30" 2560px wide panel was only $1700ish. Of course, the 30" doesn't have all of the inputs.
I've got the 2407WFP. The extra 3" on the display would make it worse as a computer display, but would be decent for when I watch TV on it. I'll upgrade to the 30" when prices come down to reality and they add component video...
Sweet. Still, I'm happy with my 2407WFP-HC.
Do like the new styling though. Well, I like the monitor bit of it. The stand doesn't look as good as the old bird-foot one.
The article doesn't mention this, but it has the wide colour gamut like the new 2408 and 3008 panels. This is great news for any photographers and designers on a tight budget. In fact, this is definitely on my short-list now.
Should be easier to read the screen?

How broken is this comment system?
Why do you say that? Your second comment is different from your first one which is consistent with you deliberately posting an altered second comment.
agreed...needs some re-coding.
Monitor is sweet though...however a little pricy (sp?).
Thats because I didn't get a confirmation of it working, and when I checked the comment page my first one wasn't there. It obviously takes a few minutes for the hamsters to work.

What's your problem?
Kudos to the carrier pigeons which have to fly all the way to Belgium and back to accomplish this.
stop defending the comment system you losers. i can deal with it and dont complain, but it SUCKS. period.
Apple has a 30 inch widescreen LCD what's so special about this one? (is it because it's new? :|)
Dell also has a 30" monitor to offer.
It's size isn't necessarily the news, it's the price. And before anyone throws up the quality difference, let me remind you of the 2005FPW fiasco.
first of all...I'm not a "mactard".. don't have , or ever had a mac of any kind / ipod / iphone... and i'm happy with my pc... i was just asking a question.... no need to get all "temperamental" on me ;)
Why does every post have to mention Apple? I'm a big mac fan - I've got a MacBook, iPhone, and I've set aside the money for a Mac Pro come Nehalem, and even I'm getting fed up of the fanboys every post.
IMO, it's not the size, but the features.
Last I checked, the Apple Displays don't have quite the number of connections.
I'd get this for the HDMI, composite, and DVI connections alone.
Then I can use it for both a TV for my game consoles/media and a monitor for my PC.
my monitor used to be 22 inch. now its 37 inch.
how big is big enough?
I'm getting sick of the over saturated of LCD being released. Sure the price been dropping but the techology haven't really picked up. When are they planning to release a LCD and it response time that's going to equal a CRT?
$999 is NOT quite the steal but $600 would be. I can't believe just another 3 more inches almost double the price of the 24". My 24" look a bit better than the Dell 27" downstairs.

Oops. Double post. What the heck happen?
4 posts in a row? C'mon man...
Nice monitor though...
Make a worthy sequel to Aliens and I'll forgive you.

More like highway robbery since I paid half for my 28".
TN display? Im going back to bed.
I found this, which claims it's an S-PVA panel. Don't know for sure though.

Wish i could be in bed at 1:24pm. ( i know, he's probably in another country, but itd still be nice to crawl into bed at 1:24pm once in a while :) )
Umm.. wtf is with all the double comments?
the comment system has a delay sometimes, so people think what they typed didn't post, so they do it again...it is an error with the site, and with peoples' impatience.
Pretty much every other blogging system works, maybe they should just sack off blogsmith and use wordpress or something.
I need a bigger monitor but this may be too big
torn between a 24 or 26
any one got any recommendations?
Acer makes a 25" monitor that is IPS tech.
Totally lame.
My 15.4" Thinkpad has a 1920x1200 screen. At 27" you would want 2560x1600 at least surely?
I use a 2405fpw, and would like to have the same 1920x1200 resolution at 27", 28" or 30", easier for my aging eyes, easier for a few people to view at once.
It's below €1000 in Europe as well. It's not as gouging as Dell's regular European prices.
since the advent of HDMI and/or Blackbox's 2 X DVI, anything bigger than 22 is too big for my desk; as secondary monitors in clone mode I opted for a 50" lg plasma and a 36 sony lcd.
Just spend a couple of hours wiring and a few bucks for an electric drill to make holes in your walls. You won't regret it
You forgot a few bucks for your hydro bills, too.
Liking the new slicker Dell monitors that are coming out
999$ for 1920×1200..
well, hell no.
Sorry, resolution comes before EVERTHING else for me.
make it 2560×1536 (or so) then I'm buying it right now.
Doesn't 2560x16XX resolution require an SLI configuraion?
If so, the target audience would shrink considerably...maybe thats why it's 1920x1200?
helix, no, it doesn't. It just requires a video card that can do dual-link DVI, which is pretty common these days.
Delicious DisplayPort.
For all those moaning about it having the same res as a 24" please stop to think about those with visual disabilities. We don't need uber-high res, we need a reasonable res on a bigger screen.
No offense, but i hardly think Dell's marketing team was sitting around thinking "if we could just grab the visual disabilities market ...."
I have the dell 24" WFP... i would like to see this badboy in action...see if the increased pixel size pissed me off or not.
That's the worst argument for low resolution I've ever heard.
Turn the resolution down if you need to, don't encourage inferior overpriced hardware
this is way too expensive for me...i have never bought a monitor over $400...i guess this is targeted for pro artist? well...im a amateur artist...
Larger flat panels cost more money. It's just a basic fact of our existence.
There's no way this is targeted at a pro market. The monitor clearly has a TN panel (the 6ms response time and absurdly high contrast ratio give it away), and no self-respecting professional (graphic/photo/etc) would use a panel that only recreates 262,144 colors over one that recreates 16.7 million colors, which is the difference between a 6-bit and 8-bit panel.
I can almost guarantee this is not a TN panel. It's just part of Dell's nomenclature, no ultra sharps are ever TN panels
@Scott that was true until Dell decided to water down the UltraSharp brand and start using TN panels. How else would you explain the drop in price? Do a google search for 2009wfp and 6-bit.
thanks for the replies. You are right, Zak, i stupidly forgot to take the screen size into consideration. :p
so is this monitor just targeted for people who want larger screen? why not just buy a high def lcd tv then..? (I'm noob :p) i bought a toshiba 32" 720p tv for $700 last year...it has hdmi, dvi, higher contrast ratio... the only disadvantage seems to me is the 8ms reponse time...
And a lower resolution.
Or that a 720p tv would likely be running a screen resolution closest to 1366x768 in the monitor display world. If your tv was 1080p, then you'd be at 1920x1080 = this is 1920x1200 and therefore higher than 1080p which in turn is sharper than your tv.
A lot of guys have paid a lot for an extra three inches - I know the ladies like it.
If the price drops enough, I'll fetch it to replace my non-HDCP 2405FPW. Finally, no more need for AnyDVD HD to bypass HDCP for my DVI input!
So, if I'm interested in purchasing a new PC laptop... but which one is better? HP just came out with a whole new line of awesome laptops (16 to be exact) and now this one w/ Dell.
I know several sources who claim Dell is the master of the PC... thoughts?

Lenovo...or Apple. Also, wrong thread, chief.
I like the Dells because they allow ridiculously [awesome] hi-res panels in their laptops.
Nicesh! I wonder if it'll fit up my bum? LOL
Read link is down. Thanks for the info though :)
Guys, i got 3 of the previous gen monitors in my office.
yes, they are 1920, BUT i get to put em farther from me, so i get to have more deskspace between me AND the monitor.
That is a HUGE +
Also, this calibrate rather nicely.
but i did pay about $1,300 for each one of em :-(
I do think DELL cheaped out on materials to lower the price.
My monitors have a glass stand thats about half inch thick, and are full
of aluminum parts and aluminum case (kinda sucks when you turn it off, you can hear the metal flexing because its cooling down.)
i got half way down the comments page before I gave up looking for any sign of intelligence! sorry if there were any further down the page.
this display is s-pva which is enough to make it over 1000.00. the fact that it has display port should make it over 1400.00. the quality of this panel if it has the fixes the 3008 got in its rerelease would make it one of the best panels available. most panels under 30" are pva not ips but there are a few exceptions. the other reason the price is above the 1000.00 mark is that the panel is made by samsung..
I have the 2707WFP. I did a lot of reading before buying this one, and obviously the "larger" pixel thing was brought up more than once in various forums. I never really understood what they meant, so I went to a Dell store to take a look. To be honest, it's not like I can actually see pixel on my screen and I'm so picky about my screens that I'll wipe off even a single speck of dust.
It's larger, there's a lot of screen estate, and because I work in a home office, I can put this monitor much further back than my previous dual 20" LCD setup. Before I was maybe about 8" away from my 20". Now I'm at almost 17" away from the 2707WFP. That's a huge improvement and less strain on my eyes. And just generally being able to sit further back from the computer has made me less stressed over all and my back doesn't hurt as much.
Watching movies and TV on this thing is great. I can just sit back and enjoy. I highly recommend this monitor to anyone with the desk space, it'll definitely take up a fair amount. And unless you work in an environment where "big pixels" are a no-no, just pretend like you never heard it. It's a great monitor.
This actually doesnt seem to have DisplayPort according to the Dell website.

For about $200 more I could get a 42" 1920x1080 Sharp Aquos with built-in HD tuner, remote control, and most of the same connections that this DELL supposedly offers. Why the hell would I buy this DELL???
Or for the same price I could get a 32" 1920x1080 Sharp Aquos with free shipping!

Why should I buy this DULL???
...Have you ever heard of pixel pitch? (dot pitch)
Try writing a word doc on a 42 inch screen with a dot pitch of .48, which is what that 42 inch monitor would have.
The only thing "dull " around here is your brain. Christ.
From the manual:
Viewing angle: 89° (Vertical) typical, 89° (Horizontal) typical
What kind of panel is this?
"...Have you ever heard of pixel pitch? (dot pitch)

...Have you ever heard of a DUMBASS that sits 3 feet from his 42" 1920x1080 LCD writing a word doc bitching about pixel pitch? I guess you haven't looked in the mirror lately eh GENIUS?
Dell's monitor stands are getting more ugly, and cheap looking.
If we think world without entertainment,it's nothing. In today's scenario the Cheap LCD TV has been taken the good place in the mode of entertainment. Can they hold the market?
The kicker with this monitor is that it can display way more colors than even Dell's latest 30-incher (3008). According to the product's page where you can actually buy the monitor, It's a bit brighter than all of their other UltraSharps (450 cd/m2), but the manual for the same thing lists the brightness as less (400 cd/m2), so that's a bit of a concern. The manual also shows the DisplayPort, while the product page does not:

I'm a little worried about the discrepancies. Any one actually seen one of these things yet? I'd love to pick one up, especially given the color gamut, but am nervous, given the discrepancies and that there's only one review out there that I can find (http://www.cnet.com.au/desktops/monitors/0,239029422,339289509,00.htm).
